Wow......things keep going from bad to worse.

Last month, the top 2018 prospect in Ohio said what many are thinking after he backed off his pledge. Cincinnati forward Darius Bazley told The Columbus Dispatch: “They didn’t even make the NIT, which is unfortunate, but I looked into the recruits they have coming into next year, they didn’t look too good for the future.”
Yikes. If that’s how top recruits perceive Ohio State, the damage may be irreparable. Matta is signed through 2019. But as the daggers keep coming, and with Ohio State staring at its longest season in years, it appears only a matter of when time will run out.

You know how we've had that disappointing game or two when they're playing right with (or losing to) some no name school in the non-conference schedule. Next season, I think we'll be happy if they can keep up with the NC A&T's of the world.

2 PM presser with Gene and Thad.

Gary Parrish is saying that Thad will address his future.

    odd timing--something's up

Bucknuts reporting that Thad will be stepping down after this coming season.

Can't say I'm shocked, as things have gone from bad to worse in the past couple years to the point where no one wants to stay and hardly anyone good wants to come.

    He should just go now.
  • wildcats20
    And he is.
  • Laley23
Odd. Why now? Waiting a year gives them a free year of basically recruiting and seeing what's there. Now? Kinda stuck in some ways. Gonna be a lot harder to get guys to jump in June.

He should've just retired now. He's really fucking the situation even worse for the new coach. The only way they save anything at this point is to name the new coach right now. Otherwise, no quality talent will even list Ohio State and any holdovers after this year are likely out the door. Someone like Bates-Diop, grad transfer candidate. The roster already blows for 2017-18.

Clay Hall saying an "OSU insider" says the wish list is:

    Billy D
    Tony Bennett
    Sean Miller
    Jay Wright
    Brad Stevens

I spit out my damn Pepsi when I read this. Most hilarious wish list of all time.

LOL that is a hell of a wish list. Zero chance of any of those guys.

I suppose Tony Bennett COULD leave Virginia, but doubt it.

As a Columbus resident who lives near OSU and likes to watch college basketball, PLEASE NO Tony Bennett. Boring and limited upside. Much rather go after a mid-major coach under the radar. What about Chris Holtmann or Chris Mack? There are some other really quality coaches in the region with Ohio ties as well.

Mack would be a great hire.

They're called "Wish Lists" for a reason, lol.

If there is a point of contention, it is the timing. Smith should have made the move in March, when a bigger list of candidates remained available. That includes presumed frontrunner Archie Miller, a former OSU assistant who instead left Dayton for Indiana.
I said this on numerous occasions...water under the bridge now...too bad.

Tough ending for Thad Matta. From all appearances, he's a great guy. It really seems like his health issues were a huge factor in his team's struggles the last couple of years. With the way these coaches are paid, and the multi-million dollar buyout Matta will receive, it is impossible for me to feel sorry for him. But I think most Buckeye fans wish him well wherever he goes.

    Nice read.

So I keep seeing Billy Donovan's name getting thrown around, and not just by random people on twitter. It's people connected with OSU who obviously know more than me...but I cannot in my right mind fathom WHY he'd ever consider leaving OKC and the NBA life to come back to college, let alone to a school where basketball is 2nd fiddle?
  • Heretic
With RW being the complete focal point of the offense and a blah support cast, I could see him thinking he's stuck in the realm of 5-7 seeds and first round exits indefinitely and thinking about leaving at least OKC, if not the NBA.

Now, doing that to go to OSU and their (at the time) mediocre roster that has very little depth, while being perennial second fiddle to football regardless of how well he does? Different story, there.

I'm not saying Donovan has any interest in OSU, but he did pretty well at Florida and you could argue they are a football school.

I'd assume it's easier to recruit to Florida than OSU, especially when it's for basketball.
