Well, they certainly aren't going to go to a mediocre program in Miami. Lol.

Nice shot, Miami is no way a mediocre program.

I should have thrown a smiley in there. I was joking. Although Miami is slightly above average. They should have thrown more money at Butch before he wasted his time wasting Cleveland's draft picks.

Had Butch Davis stayed with Miami, you guys would have stayed a top 15 team, easily. Instead, you got stuck with Coker and Shannon, and now you're slightly above average.
  • Ytowngirlinfla
Coker was the shitty coach, Shannon has turned things around, I wouldn't say a current top 15 team is an average team.

I didn't say average. I said slightly above average. And Ohio State is a top 10 team, and even as a HUGE fan of them, I consider them to be barely above average.

But how much of Florida's success can you weigh on great coaching, compared to recruiting?
I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Spurrier's results aided his recruiting. Spurrier at the kitchen table across from your mother and you probably didn't endear you to Florida as much as success did. Meyer probably fared better in that dept.

The really good ones do both very well, face to face, x & o's

So then you do agree that they have a big edge because of their name thanks to what Spurrier and Meyer have done?

In essence you sort of just agreed with me that UF is going to get their recruits, simply because they are UF, thanks to what 2 of the last 3 head coaches have done for them.

It's to short of a time frame to say "name only" obviously their name helps them at this point in time but due to the success of the last two coaches. Bring in Joe bag-o-barbecue Chips as a head coach and that dwindles fast, look at Michigan as an example. There are not nearly as many high end recruits there were even in the Llod Carr years, and they were clearly a "name" program.

Michigan was still 8th in 2009, and 10th in 2008.

In Zook's first season, Florida was 20th in recruiting, and took them to 2nd in 2003.

However, Meyer has easily been their best recruiting coach being top 5 in each year but 1, in which he was 7.

I don't know. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Lol.

But Zook couldn't (and still can't) x and 0 his way out of a wet paper bag.

I should have said Spurrier and Meyer instead of last two coaches, that's what I meant. Zook got axed despite his recruiting ability.

Zook is a terrible coach. Zook just needs to get a job as a recruiting advisor.

BTW, great discussion. This is what debating on these message boards should be. It's been a pleasure.

Urban Meyer to the Cleveland Browns!

Isn't he from the Youngstown area? I wouldn't be shock at all if this happens.

I highly doubt it. He has no ties with Holmgren, and from what I understand, Holmgren would want a veteran HC, IF he let's go of Mangini.

    Ashtabula area I think.

From the SI article that was out a few weeks ago, I think his family moved to Cincinnati and now that is where most are based out of. His sister is Admin at UC and his dad lives Cincy too (I think)

    Personal life

Meyer was born on July 10, 1964 in Toledo, Ohio and moved to Ashtabula, Ohio as a child.[4] He graduated from Ashtabula's Saint John High School. Meyer was also selected in the 13th round, as a shortstop, by the Atlanta Braves in the 1982 Major League Baseball Draft.[4] Meyer spent two seasons playing minor league baseball in the Braves organization.[14] He went on to play defensive back at the University of Cincinnati before earning his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1986.[4] During his undergraduate studies, Meyer also became a brother of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and met his wife at Sigma Chi's Derby Days philanthropy event.[34]

Meyer went on to earn his master's degree in sports administration at Ohio State University in 1988.[4]

I think he gets hired by Jacksonville Jags in time to draft Tim Tebow.

Meyer said in a telephone interview late Saturday that the hospital trip prompted weeks of soul searching that ended on Christmas night, when he told his family he would be leaving his job at Florida. He said that his 18-year-old daughter, Nicki, hugged him and said, “I get my daddy back.”

Wow. That's really all I can say. I wish urban the best. It's shocking news.
  • jhay78
Not a Meyer or UF fan at all, but here's to him getting his health back and enjoying time with his family. Hard to top what that guy accomplished as a head coach.

Part of me wonders about an NFL job, or Tebow leaving, but I really do think he's stepping down for the right reasons.

Meyer to Notre Dame. I have inside info. from athlete37 of this website. He thought it was going to be Bob Stoops, but it is actually going to be Meyer. ND will buy-out Kelly before he even starts so that Meyer can coach the Irish next season!!! ;)

Geez, man...get your facts straight. ND found out that Kelly lied on his resume - he said his last job was coach of a MAJOR college football program. Then they found out it was only Cincinnati........bus-ted.
