Oregon, NCAA agreed Ducks committed 'major violations'

  The University of Oregon has agreed that its football coaches committed at least one major violation related to the NCAA's ongoing investigation into the Ducks' recruiting practices from 2008 to 2011. As a result, the university has proposed to self-impose a two-year probation for the football program and a reduction of one scholarship for each of the next three seasons.

  We'll see if the NCAA decides to do anything else.

  According to the ESPN article I saw there were no findings of lack of institutional control or unethical conduct. Which would mean nothing really will happen.

  My guess is it's made up. Haven't seen it mentioned on a single Michigan message board, including Rivals and 24/7. The only other person besides you to mention was another OSU friend of mine. I assume he got it from on OSU board.

  Seems like we know why Chip Kelly pulled a Pete Carrol. I doubt if any program out there is "clean" anymore.

  Wow, this is weak ass shit. I don't know the details of the recent punishments handed out to know how they justified their punishments. But from a public perception stand point I honestly don't know how the reconcile the differences between OSU, Oregon, PSU, etc.
  
  Basically the team that actually intentionally cheated and broke the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage (Oregon) got the least damaging punishment even though their behavior was probably the most detrimental to the fairness of the college game.

  Championship run? They had already lost at Wisconsin and we're going to get to Championship game. I might be wrong, but wasn't Tressel's lie between the time of the last regular season game and before the bowl game, and the bowl they were selected for already announced? The only thing to gain by lying at that point was a victory in a bowl game, no championship.
  
  And yes, while recruits don't always pan out, these were highly sought after recruits from Texas. These werent' 3 star guys, wasn't 1 of the recruits (unsure if there were more than 1 involved with Lyles) the 5 star RB who is now at Baylor? And I believe LaMichael James was another Lyles "recruit."
  
  I don't know, but paying off "recruiting experts" with cold hard cash to get recruits to your school sure seems more nefarious then lying about tattoo's traded for memorabilia.
  
  I'm not saying that Tressel covering up for his guys wasn't dumb or didn't deserve punishment. But what Oregon did is at the very least equally as bad.

  This is the kind of hair splitting that is exactly the problem with NCAA enforcement and its arbitrary rulings.
  
  What I find refreshing is that most people have woken up to this and the abomination that the NCAA has become. A few years ago when the 'scandal' broke with Jim Tressel, I was practically a lone wolf on this site in decrying the NCAA and what it does in the name of amateur athletics. It is great to be vindicated.
  What still escapes most peoples attention, however, is the way it abuses/restricts its 'student' athletes from monetary gain( even in chump change amounts) while raking in $millions for itself and member institutions. What the NCAA did to Devier Posey was shocking for the few hundred dollars of 'improper' ( or so the NCAA said)benefits he received. This only happens because of the complicity of the NCAA, its member institutions, and the media all of who feed off the cash cow of college athletics.....and the fans are complicit too, looking the other way and justifying and rationalizing.
