SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death.
An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.

IMO, he didn't start it, but he found out about it early on and kept it going. After that, it started taking on a life of it's own, and he didn't know how to stop it. Or, based on reports coming out from his teammates, he loved the attention, and didn't really want to stop it.

Short article from TMZ...so consider the source. But, this is the one question I would like to see answered about the timeline between when he says he found out about it, when he told ND, and when it finally become public.

Sources connected to Te'o say ... it's true what ND Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said Wednesday night, that Manti realized he had been hoaxed on Dec. 6, when he got a phone call from "Lennay" ... months after he thought she was dead.

But sources tell us ... Manti didn't tell his coaches about the hoax until Dec. 26 ... because he thought it would be a huge distraction while the team prepared to face Alabama in the BCS Championship.

I could see someone doing it out of being so pissed off. "Oh, you guys think this is funny? Well, I'll show you!" Then it just shit storms, and he ends up getting a ton of attention from it, and he probably didn't foresee it.

But he still sucks, and so does lotz.

Then he's a fucking idiot. It's not hard to stop. But how do you go years believing this person exists and never meet them? No matter how this comes out, he's a fucking idiot.

I would support him if he did this. If he said, "Fuck you, media. You deserve it!" But that'll never happen.

The Florence Freedom (a minor league baseball team in Florence, KY just south of Cincinnati) is planning a "Manti Te'o's Girlfriend Bobblehead Night" on May 23rd. First 1,000 people to the ballpark receive an empty box.

God I love minor league baseball.

That would actually be pretty damned funny. But he would have had to done it when it first came out.

@schadjoe: on @SportsCenter woman tells ESPNs Shelley Smith that man confessed to orchestrating Te'o hoax; Te'o didn't know

might be breaking news to Sportscenter, but news crews have been outside his house since Wednesday night. They just broke in to The Herd and said a woman contacted Shelly Smith saying Touisosopo confessed to her he was behind it.

@schadjoe: Two people told Shelley Smith that man who allegedly duped Manti Te'o pulled exact scheme w same fake pics on family member

So many twists and turns in this thing.

certainly lied/embellished the relationship before Dec 6th, didn't know about the hoax.

I thought it was reported that he found out on Dec. 6th? I'm not excusing him. He should not have talked about her after he found out and he should not have waited 3 weeks to inform the university of this.

Maybe. But maybe not. Maybe he really is just that big of an idiot and was just lying about meeting her to save face.
