College Basketball Random Chatter 2012-2013 Season

reclegend22By at Syracuse, do you mean MSG?
The game was not at the Carrier Dome. I don't think Temple would have won there, but it would still have been a close game. Temple is a very good basketball team, with a slew of really smart players, who really understand the game. Fran Dunphy is a heck of a coach.
The Orange are still loaded with talent and will be a very tough team in the Big East and come March. -
Azubuike24I actually agree with S&L here. KU was a lot tougher and Self clearly outcoached Roy. Despite having 4 first rounders and 3 other possible NBA talents, UNC was an enigma. There was something just "missing" from the team. It started with Harrison Barnes. The most overrated and seemingly uninspiring "star" ever. Same with John Henson. Losing Marshall was more of a mental loss in the end, but it was evident how tough KU was against UNC in that game. They took all the momentum with about 12 minutes left in the 2nd half and just put the clamps down.

Azubuike24Yeah I knew it was at MSG, but The Cuse is used to playing there and the crowd was definitely pro Cuse. Another win racked up for the A-10 though.
Temple over #3 Syracuse
Butler over #1 Indiana, #9 North Carolina, Northwestern and Marquette
Dayton has beaten Alabama and Murray State
Duquesne won at West Virginia
LaSalle beat Villanova
St. Joseph's beat #20 Notre Dame
VCU over #19 Memphis and Alabama
Xavier over Purdue -

Also, was Kendall Marshall not on the floor when Florida State Buster Douglas'd North Carolina 90 to 57 in Tallahassee? Marshall had six points and four assists at that funeral. A great team does not lose by 33 to anybody.Azubuike24;1349401 wrote:I actually agree with S&L here. KU was a lot tougher and Self clearly outcoached Roy. Az hit it on the head. That UNC team lacked a certain something -- maybe chemistry -- the entire year. They were nowhere near as elite as UNC's 2005 or 2009 squads. -

It's a good thing nobody said that then.reclegend22;1349358 wrote: To say Syracuse last year is clearly better than any team this year is outrageous. -

You said that you group Syracuse in among the team's from last year that you would take over any team this year. I take that as meaning you think they are definitely better. I disagree.Mulva;1349412 wrote:It's a good thing nobody said that then. -
Azubuike24Is this Cuse with Fab Melo consistently available? If so, I would. With that said, it's always tough to read Syracuse. They really play a unique style which IMO, doesn't bode well for success in 6 straight games. There's a reason Boeheim has only made 3 Final Fours in 36 years. Very good coach, but he's more a product of consistently and longevity...

Not the same meaning at all in my opinion.reclegend22;1349414 wrote:You said that you group Syracuse in among the team's from last year that you would take over any team this year. I take that as meaning you think they are definitely better. I disagree. -
reclegend22Guess I misinterpreted you, then.

Azubuike24K-State giving Florida all they can handle.
Good win for Missouri beating Illinois. -
Azubuike24Coming into today, there were only 8 unbeaten teams. Syracuse, Illinois and New Mexico all lost. Only 5 remain.
Duke
Cincinnati
Michigan
Wyoming

reclegend22K-State edges past Florida. Big win for Bruce Weber.
-
Azubuike24Good news for K-State...they won.
Bad news for K-State...Bruce Weber is their coach.
I mean it's only downhill from here... -
reclegend22It is a win like that over a top 10 opponent that will bide Weber time and fool K-State fans into believing everything is OK. But I agree that Weber is not a good coach. At K-State, though, he might be good enough.
-
Azubuike24I can agree with that, but his track record at Illinois was similar. He was great his first few years. It slowly got worse and complacent. Most Ilinois fans will probably tell you Weber should've been canned 3 years ago, but he did just enough to squeak by and keep his job. His teams the last few years were never a threat to do anything though...which is torturous territory for a fan. I'd rather suck and clean house than just maintain bubble status consistently.

True. But I think K-State fans eventually need to come back to reality. (And after sitting amongst them at the CBE Classic in Kansas City in 2010, they are in fact delusional.) Bob Huggins, and even Frank Martin to a lesser degree, was an anomaly. He only came to Manhattan because he was fired for drunken driving at Cincinnati. They won't see another coach of that caliber anytime soon. Prior to Huggins and Martin, K-State reached the NCAAs just once since 1992. The days of Tex Winter and Mitch Richmond are long over. Riding the bubble with Bruce Weber might not be so bad. That's my opinion, of course. Perhaps after Bruce Weber is let go, K-State will be able to snatch a top mid-level guy and re-build again.Azubuike24;1349517 wrote:I can agree with that, but his track record at Illinois was similar. ironman02I'm a little late to this, but I think it's entirely possible that Carolina would've beaten Kansas with Kendall Marshall. That was a close game until the last few minutes with Stilman White running the point for the Heels...yes, Stilman White. If last year's Carolina team was healthy (Marshall, Henson at 100%) during the tournament, I do think they would have played UK for the title. It might've been a good game too, since Carolina lost to them by one point at Rupp, but that was also before Strickland was lost for the season.
Agreed, though, that last year's Carolina team was nowhere near 2005 or 2009. Those teams would have destroyed Carolina 2012 without a doubt. Honestly, according to Roy's pattern, Carolina was supposed to be a juggernaut this season, but early defections to the NBA obviously changed that.
Edit: Oh, and Kendall Marshall is no longer in the D-League. He's back up with the Suns. From what I heard, they wanted to get him some regular minutes to work on his game, stay in shape, and get ready to contribute. I don't know if he'll be much of a factor this year in the NBA, but he'll be pretty good eventually. The guy did set an ACC single-season record for assists, so even if he doesn't work out in the NBA, he still was a difference maker at the collegiate level. He would've helped Carolina immensely in the NCAAs, especially in a game where they trailed KU by 1 point with just over 3 minutes remaining...hardly the lopsided win that was implied earlier in this thread. -

From what I read it was to work on his shot and he came back just as bad. Great passer yes, will struggle with his shot still. -
ironman02
He wasn't a scorer at Carolina, and he won't be in the NBA either. There's always the chance that he could improve his offensive skill set over time, but he's always gonna be a facilitator. He's a great decision-maker, one of the best passing PGs I've watched in quite a long time at Carolina (and that includes Lawson and Felton), and he gets his teammates the ball in position to score. Like I said, I don't know how his career in the NBA will end up, but I think he'll eventually be a solid contributor for someone.sportswizuhrd;1349579 wrote:

The more important point to this conversation, though, was his importance to Carolina last year. In my opinion, he was that team's most valuable player. Without him, the offense was a shell of what it was with him on the floor. Guys like Barnes, Henson, and Zeller were great when Marshall got them the ball in position to score. Stilman White couldn't do that for them. -
Azubuike242-10 Old Dominion beats Virginia. Tony Bennett's days numbered?

This, plus 'Cuse going down, kinda' takes the sting out of my Buckeyes losing. College basketball, you gotta' love it!!!Azubuike24;1349585 wrote:2-10 Old Dominion beats Virginia. Tony Bennett's days numbered? -
Azubuike24San Diego State/Arizona tonight. Looking forward to it.

SportsAndLadyBearcats no longer undefeated. Lose to the now 13-1 Lobos of New Mexico.
-
Azubuike24UNM just lost at the Pit to South Dakota State. They play St. Louis next. Another example of parity...and the Lobos are probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the Mountain West...
