Teams looking to join Div I-A
-
Elliot StablerIf you hear of any teams looking to come into I-A when the moratorium ends, post them here
One that I know of is Cal Poly
I believe that I have heard Villanova,Montana, and Appy State are also looking to join -
Elliot StablerDepends which conference they join
Villanova is rumored to join the MAC
Montana is rumored to join the MWC
Appy State is rumored to join the Sun Belt -
Little DannyVillanova is not looking to join the FBS/DIA division. Nova is a very small school and does not ahve the resources to make the jump. Heck their football stadium only seats 12,000 people. If I recall you have to average attendance of 20-25,000 to even keep your status in FBS/DIA.
-
Elliot StablerThat's just what I've heard
-
Little DannyI think Charlotte (Former known as UNC-Charlotte) is making the jump either next year or the year after.
-
Elliot StablerI didn't even know they had a team
-
Red_Skin_PrideAppalachian State would contend almost immediately for the conference if they go to the Sun Belt.

UNC Charlotte will be starting a football team in the next couple years. They have no team at the moment.Little Danny wrote: I think Charlotte (Former known as UNC-Charlotte) is making the jump either next year or the year after. -
jordo212000App State is selling themselves short on the Sun Belt. Not sure where else they'd fit in, but that is a bad conference
-
Elliot StablerI was thinking BIg East maybe
-
OldDanTuckerC-USA would be a good fit for Appy St. they would be tough even in that Conf IMO
-
darbypitcher22Appy St. would be able to contend.... not so sure about the others you mentioned.... at least contend immediately...

Correct. However from what I have read I thought their plan was to start the team and then make a rapid move to the Bowl Championship Division (like South Florida did). -

I think you have seat that many, not have that many for average attendance. If you had to average that many Kent and Akron would have a hard time staying D1A.Little Danny wrote: Villanova is not looking to join the FBS/DIA division. SykotykThere's ways around it. Once you get accepted into a conference, you're basically protected from ever being forced out of the FBS. And one way to 'boost' your attendance is to play a 'home' game in a big stadium near your opponent.
For instance, Villanova could play Penn State at Lincoln Financial. Appy State could play Tennessee at Charlotte. Montana could play a 'home' game in Denver against Colorado, etc. That all counts towards your average. Just like when Idaho played seven miles away in Pullman, WA (at WSU) to help boost their average. Once they were accepted into a conference, they moved back to their tiny Kibbie Dome.
But, I agree, why leave where you can play for a title? Not everyone becomes a Boise State. Many become a Ball State or Buffalo.

redfalconTexas State and App State are both looking to make the move, and both can easily meet the attendance requiremnts. I have also heard Massachusetts has been talking, but it may be dead in the water now.

grass_lickeri think youngstown ursuline irish h.s. should since they recruit better than all these schools but theyll probably stay d5, LOL

DaBrowns41I'm still waiting for this source.
It's quite annoying when you get people that say "It's just what I've heard".
Two years ago "I heard" that Derek Anderson was going to be a top 5 QB in the league in 2008. -

mucalum49I know Georgia Southern and UT-San Antonio are starting programs but I think they are starting in FCS. UTSA has Larry Coker as their first head coach and will play in the Alamo Dome which could ease the transition to FBS if they get enough of a fan base.

They are selling themselves short because of their record:jordo212000 wrote: App State is selling themselves short on the Sun Belt. Not sure where else they'd fit in, but that is a bad conference
12-25 vs. all current FBS teams
7-21 if you consider that Marshall was I-AA for all of the games between the two
2-15 if you consider that Wake Forest was a bottom feeder every time Appy State beat them
But if you are ready to say they are better than the Sun Belt because they have one upset over Michigan, split with (Sun Belt's Troy), and winless against the rest of the division, including games against (Sun Belt's) Middle Tennessee State, Wyoming, and Hawaii, then.....okay. -

Georgia Southern has been around for a long time and won several FCS/I-AA titles.mucalum49 wrote: I know Georgia Southern and UT-San Antonio are starting programs but I think they are starting in FCS. App state consistently contends for the I-AA National Title, and no program has ever made the jump because they have a huge winning record against teams who are in I-A. They make the jump pretty much knowing that they are going to suck for a long time, but they will eventually once again contend.enigmaax wrote:

The last four teams to make the jump were:
Western Kentucky
Florida International
Florida Atlantic
Uconn
All of these teams have struggled.
Western Kentucky has been playing for two years now and didn't win a game this year. They didn't make the jump because they were winning before. -
jordo212000My point wasn't that I thought that App St. could make it in the Big 10 or Big East, it was just that signing up for the Sun Belt would be stupid. I'd rather be independent then play in that garbage of a conference
