  The argument is it helps out local college athletic departments. Smaller schools tend to have a more locally based student population so it gives more kids from the area a chance to play sports at the collegiate level and also receive a college education through scholarship. As opposed to playing UAB which most likely gets the majority of it's student population from Alabama.

  Its supposes to help fund the athletic programs of the other state schools. The state assembly as threatened to introduce legislation about it in the past but OSU has avoided it. Hopefully this doesnt force the issue.

  I can see your point in some ways, but whatever happened to ticket sales, boosters, and people who donate millions to the sports programs? Didnt a BGSU grad just give close to 20 million to the basketball team ? Happens all the time.

  Yes, there are ticket sales and boosters/donors at small schools as well. Typically not as many or as rich. But every little bit helps.

  It could. It was very close in the 90's and osu took it upon themselves. Eary 2000's as well.

  And its not like some other big school isnt going to play the MAC teams and give them alot of money. Bama gave a chunk of change to a MAC school last year.

  Those schools usually still run deficits. I believe there are only a few schools that break even on athletics and even fewer that make money.

  I think the number is in the single digits, or at last it was at one time.
