What Buckeye(s) will leave early for the NBA?

  • vball10set
In your opinion, who'll declare for the NBA draft after this season?
  • bases_loaded
    None, but see 2 transfers.

I hope not, but it wouldn't come as a total surprise

Buford will leave. Hope this helps.

Sullinger. I don't see Scott going anywhere. His minutes will increase substantially next year, but it's up to him to develop a jumper, which is what really is holding him back now. I think Thomas has recently played his way back to OSU.

Agree. Sullinger is the only one remotely ready, as far as underclassman. Scott isn't going anywhere. And u are on the money, his outside shot is horrendous right now. Throws up a brick with no rotation at all.
There are rumblings about Thomas. He was on a sports talk show other nite, was asked if he was going to go to NBA. Said he would wait until season is over to make decision. Which I personally think would be completely stupid. He isn't near ready. Dime a dozen at his size. He has potential, but needs at least another year. And if Sully leaves, Thomas would be the #1 option offensively next year.

I assume Sullinger leaves. He has said multiple times he told Matta he wouldn't be a 1-and-done, but never that he plans to stay all 4 years. The longer he stays, the more NBA scouts will drop his value, ala Tyler Hansbrough, which I don't think is an awful comparison to Sully. Sully is more talented, but they have similar limitations.

Assuming Sully leaves, Thomas stays. Don't think Scott transfers. Yes, Craft is still going to be here, but I'd expect Scott's minutes to increase next year. Without Sullinger and Buford, OSU is going to need to get out and run to take advantage of their strengths next year, which will be their length and athleticism. With Thompson, Ross and Smith sharing the 2/3 position, and Craft/Scott playing the point, and Williams providing a shot blocking ability at the 5, they should be able to really pressure on defense and fast break on offense with Thompson and Smith filling the lanes, and Ross and Thomas flaring to 3 point line.

Thomas will probably be a 3 in the NBA. There are not a lot of 6-9 3s in the League. I dont know what NBA you are watching. His game is much more suited for the NBA than college. Leaving early would help him more than college can.

Thomas is lucky to be 6'7". He doesn't have great handles. He is inconsistant from the outside. Takes time to get his shot off. He needs at least another year. His game is NOT NBA ready. They were even talking about this on TV with NBA/college coaches.

This Thomas conversation reminds me of the Daequan Cook discussion of a couple of years ago. Different types of players, but the debate was eerily similar.

And we saw that Cook didn't exactly light it up in the NBA. Mullens and Kosta were not smart leaving. But they were also 7ft tall. Not many 7ft players. There are MANY 6'7" players with similar or better skills in NBA.

Cook was good enough to get a recent contract from OKC which pays him $6,500,000.00 over 2 years.I'd say he is doing OK.

Its all a matter of opinion, but another year of college wont help Thomas make the NBA transition any easier or better. His game is suited much more for the NBA than college. Same with Cook. What would his SO season done for him?

Sullinger would have been worth a ton more if he went last year. I think staying another year may have hurt his stock.

All relative. He had/has the ability to be much, much better. There are many player with much less ability doing much better.

Disagree. He was a top 10 pick last year, and is a top 10 pick this year.

And you think another year at OSU would be better for his growth than a year w/ NBA coaches?

Don't even start with the coaching stuff. The coaching at big time ncaa schools is as good as many in the NBA. Just because its the "NBA", doesn't always mean its better. I am not claiming to know it all, but I know an NBA player, been behind the scenes, have seen and know what goes on. Its all about the player no matter where they are. If they are willing to put in the work, whether thats at college, or NBA, then thats what makes or breaks someone.
Bottom line, is that some guys are MATURE enough to make the jump. And some are not.

If it's all about the player, then aren't you contradicting yourself by saying he should have stayed in school? lol
  • Laley23
Its all about given talent and how much you work at it.

But in the NBA, its basketball and basketball. There are no limitations as to how much you can work with coaches.

No numbnuts...not when maturity, or lack there of comes into place. And there is something to be said about playing games, real compeitition. If you go to NBA, once season starts, they rarely practice. Mostly walk throughs. So if you are stuck on the bench, and you see no game action..think what you will, but it doesn't help. Getting instruction, workouts is one thing. Playing competative games is important no matter how you want to spin it.

No offense, but there is more to playing the game than just talent or potential. There are many who left early, who didn't make it for one reason or another. And it probably wasn't because they were not talented enough.

I personally think he was more sought after last year.
