painkillers, the effect they have in sports, and the story of 2 former akron zips

I grew up with Tyler. Played ball with him all the way through..

Hard-working is an understatement. He was a great teammate and great friend.

The whole situation is fucked up.

tl;dr the whole thing. Got to timeline and stopped. Timeline says enough. Sad.

I am actually surprised that the painkillers aren't more regulated or treated as a performance enhancing drug. They allow players to come back prematurely from injuries or play through injuries that require rest and time off. I do believe that there should be medicinal amounts of HGH or steroids used that would allow atheletes to recover from injuries.

A lot of people see Rx pain killers as a "safer" drug to abuse because its medicine and not a "drug". The only difference between a medication and a poison is the dose. More and more people get addicted to opiates with percocet or oxycontin then are forced to switch to heroin because its so much cheaper.

Oxycontin was originally marketed to cancer patients only. Doctors are way too quick to prescribe it. Its not the strongest pain medication on the market, but its certainly the most abused and well known. They reformulated it in the last couple of years to make it more difficult to abuse (can't be crushed and injected anymore), but people still get high off it by ingesting it.

Very sad stories, I see way too many stories like this popping up.

What is really fucked up is that Ianello said he would have to earn his spot back! A real coach isnt supposed to be just your coach, he should be a mentor for you and look out for you as well. The kid obviously proved he could play. If I was in the kids position I would have to say that would make me relapse too. Football, or any sport can help keep people out of trouble and keep their head on straight. Classy move by Brookhart(old Akron coach) to offer him a spot on Colorado's team..just another sad event that his eligibility was gone.

I had a public speaking class with a friend of Tylers and she told us about his story. Opiate use in Fairfield county, where Tyler is from is getting pretty bad from what I hear.

I'd probably abuse Oxy if I had to play for Akron.

    I sure did.

Everyone is looking for a pity party for these guys who effectively killed themselves, and they aren't going to get it from me.

No pity party. Tyler brought it upon himself. He had a serious injury and got painkillers. He got hooked. He wasn't able to kick it.

He was a strong willed guy and couldn't get out of it.

I will say that this by no means is who he was. I remember talking to him when he was still dreaming of playing college ball again. He was fine.

This isn't meant for pity, it's an understanding that anyone can get hooked and painkillers can be bad for you if you take too many.

    That was a hard-hitting story.

Pickerington is having a very hard time with drugs right now. I know there are kids in their high school system using heroin. My best friends sister is a senior there and she tells us some crazy stories about kids. It's time for parents to step up to the plate and monitor where their kids are and what they are doing.
  • sportchampps
Btw the drugs are coming from around the Lancaster area into pickerington and it need to be stopped soon or there will be even more ods

too many parents allow it or give up on their kids. It's fucked up.
  • sportchampps
Yeah my friends sister told me how some parents found cut up straws in their kids room and ignored it. A lot of the problems start with kids getting their parents prescribed pills as their gateway. It really needs to stop but no one is stepping up to the plate. Pickerington is a great communiy with great schools ignoring a huge problem.

Drugs are a problem anywhere. If you think that it is "bad" at Pickerington, you'd be shocked to see how bad it is in rural towns. Nothing do to in those places except drugs.

Place I grew up is real bad, and has been for years.

grew up in the Ohio Valley. Pills are far and away the most abused drug in that area. A couple guys I work with in the summer were actually just involved in a drug bust over the weekend.

I know some of the rural areas are bad but that's everyone in the town not just the high schoolers. In pickerington I've heard estimates that about 25% of their senior class does heroin coke or meth regularly and about 10% do it during school. Pickerington was even mentioned on a recent show about drug use. The show was about Lancaster valley and how it's spreading. Most people tried some kind of drug in high school the problem now is heroin coke and meth can kill smoking a little pot just gives you the munchies.

Easier to get your hands on those harder drugs than it is pot.and it's cheaper. We have privileged kids with money to spend.
