Duke Mid-Season Thread

I'm reminded of one of my favorite Coach K quotes. When asked by a reporter one year if he thought Duke got all the calls, Coach K responded, "I sure hope so."

Duke pulls of another grand theft. Unreal. The Blue Devils only played well for 3 minutes. They had no business winning this game. None at all.

So a dook fan admits refs cheat in favor of dook....

But really I dont understand why one would say what you just did

Did you read my Coach K quote? That's my point-of-view on the matter. I don't actually think Duke "gets all the calls," but, even if they do, I'm certainly not going to speak out against it. I'm going to enjoy the f*ck out of the fact that Duke gets all the calls.

Calling a foul off of the monitor isnt "getting a call". Its 100% illegal.

That is definitely what it probably looked like to many viewers at home -- mainly because, as wildcats pointed out earlier, the announcers kept talking about how the officials were going to check if there was either a travel or a personal foul -- but I think what the officials were actually doing at the scorer's table is checking to see how much time was left when the foul occurred. The noise level in the building and chaotic ending to the game just confused the crew for a brief period, but they quickly got it under control.

Nothing illegal happened tonight. N.C. State just turned the gun on their own head and Duke picked up the pieces.

The Wolfpack faithful are not happy. Below is a post made by a Wolfpack fan.

"absolutely hate, hate, hate a refereeing crew that totally changes the way they call a game after halftime. If you're gonna call it tight, call it the whole way, but don't let the clearly more athletic team play in the first half, and then start blowing your whistle every 30 seconds.

At beginning of second half, until the 17:05 mark (2 minutes and 55 seconds), we were called for 4 fouls. Williams picked up his 4th less than a minute in, and Howell and Leslie picked up their 3rd.

Then, when it was 61-41 at 11:11, we get 4 fouls called on us within 2 minutes and after 8 FT attempts, it's 61-50.

Before last night, CJ Williams had committed 186 fouls in his career, and had fouled out a total of 3 times. Last night he got called for 4 fouls in roughly 5 minutes of play.

We were not just better than dook last night, we were head and shoulders more athletic, quicker, faster, and outrebounded, outhustled, and outplayed them. But because of our foul trouble, we were unable to play defense without touching someone, at risk of fouling out. That's when Rivers and Curry starting attacking the basket and opening up the floor, for layups, and open 3s.

dook is a fraud. And starting next year, they're our sockpuppet."

^^^Was there a Hightower or Valentine involved?

While that poster has a point, State still melted down. Officiating was bad, but bad both ways. They didn't give Dook a win. For a change. State single handily lost that game.

And by Wolfpack fan, you mean who, you? For somebody who claims to care so little about Duke that he says he almost never watches their games, I funny it pretty humorous that the first thing he does the morning after Duke beats N.C. State is go pull disparaging posts from Pack Pride dot com.

As for that "N.C. State" fan's claim that next year Duke will be the Wolves' "sockpuppet," that is a lot of swag for somebody who roots for a team that hasn't ventured past the Sweet 16 since the peak of hair metal. Please.

    No!!! Not a Wolfpack fan.
For somebody who claims to care so little about Duke that he says he almost never watches their games,
I catch a few road games, but I don't watch the dookies at home. It is like watching a rerun. If the dukies need help or time they get it. I've accepted those facts.

At the nc state fsu game on Saturday gugliotta and Chris corchiani were ejected from the building during the wolf pack loss. Apparently they were sitting behind the scores table and they gave Karl Hess an earful. Hilarity ensued and Hess ejected them both. Marked the second time they were ejected by Hess. The last time was in 1987 when they were playing for the pack.

Video of the Tom Gugliotta incident:

    http://deadspin.com/5886265/former-nba-star-tom-gugliotta-ejected-from-game-he-was-watching-from-the-stands

They better have been yelling "fire!" as the story connected to the video above speculates, or their ejection as players with jerseys hanging above them in the N.C. State rafters is just asinine. Karl Hess, I'm afraid, has surpassed Teddy "TV" Valentine as the biggest prima donna in basketball.
  • vball10set
Hess should not only be reprimanded, but suspended as well. Ref's these days with their prima donna attitudes have overshadowed the game for quite a while now--enough is enough.

Did anyone else see Teddy TV get called over to the Game Day booth before the OSU-Michigan game last night? TV was in all his glory and did the "Hi Mom!" thing and some other nonsense. He looked like he was fully prepared to go into a full routine, like he was Red Foxx or some shit. The guy is a joke.

I did and I was pissed about it, nothing like feeding the troll. Dakich last week commented about TV and others that need reeled in and couldn't have agreed more. Hucking it up with the ESPN guys should be cause for a fine in and of itself, at least a reprimand. These guys need a refresher on what their priorities should be.

Duke rolled into Boston tonight and overpowered BC for a 75 to 50 victory to remain in first place in the ACC at 10-2, tied with North Carolina and Florida State. Seth Curry built off his 21-point second-half performance against N.C. State on Thursday and scored 18 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three. He's catching fire at just the right time.

The most encouraging aspect of the game tonight for Duke fans, however, has to be the emergence of Austin Rivers as Duke's on-court leader. He finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. More importantly, he was a marshall out there, directing traffic and setting the tone early. We've seen Rivers perform in this role during flashes this season but he is really beginning to feel comfortable and take control. If he comes back next year, it's my personal opinion that he'll be hands down the best player in America. The kid is freakishly talented.

No offense, but it was Boston College. A decent high school team would handle them.
