Big East adding 5 teams

The current CBS Sports TV contract with Navy, future bowl commitments and scheduling commitments all make it impossible to be part of this conference expansion.

I'm glad. Maybe in a couple of years things will settle down Navy will still be able to financially stay independent.
Right because joining a conference is a horrible dishonorable thing. LOL

    Get over yourself.

That's a bit of a leap in logic. Joining a conference or not has nothing to do with honor nor is it necessarily horrible.

My guess would be Temple and Memphis. They fit the profile of the conference (big urban markets) and have a very strong basketball programs as well. Basketball coaches like Pitino and Calhoun have been raising a shyte-storm about adding these two. The one thing that might keep Temple out is that Villanova is hell-bent on not sharing Philly with the Owls.

Yeah, I had heard that Pitino was pushing for those two. Divisions would be(?):

    Boise
    SD St
    Houston
    SMU
    Louisville
    Memphis

    SNLgers
    UConn
    Cincy
    UCF
    USF
    Temple

Then why the applause? Face it, you think being independent is somehow special. News flash, it's not and the independent teams look pompous and arrogant when in reality nobody cares about the independents.
  • Con_Alma
I applaud the decision because I think it's right for the school and the program.

Special? No....just the right thing for Navy. My comments and opinions have nothing to do with conferences in general but rather what I think is right for that institution.

How they "look" to others is irrelevant to me. I certainly hope that conference affiliation decisions at the Naval Academy are not solely based on how they are viewed by others outside of the school but rather by what's right for the Midshipmen and their athletic programs.

I think you're reading into my position too much and incorrectly.

Cut the crap. The right decision for the school and the program is to join a conference. Navy is irrelevant year after year partially because they are never in the discussion to win anything and they are freaking terrible.

The right decision is to be able to have complete control over their revenue and schedule. They can do that as an independent. If they are "freaking terrible"being in a conference doesn't help them.

They have scheduling contracts out as far as 15 more years and playing Army and Air Force is must happen for the programs. Those were the sticking points in negotiations with the Big East. IN addition their CBS Sports TV contract. Those items are non-negotiable and no conference is going to like the problems that would bring with it.

The right thing for the program right now is to stay independent. It isn't crap.

We'll see if it's still the right thing in a couple of years.

If this is the case, then why doesn't every school just go independent? It's fraud logic, like I said, cut the crap. The only reason Navy wants to remain independent is so they can feel special.
  • Con_Alma
Lol. It has nothing to do with "feelings".

Every school doesn't want to schedule like Navy does which is why they don't go independent. Navy is not a traditional FBS program that has the ability to recruit Blue Chip athletes and they choose to schedule multiple FCS schools. Other FBS schools, even the lower tier ones, having such a schedule would impact their recruiting efforts. IN addition, other schools make out financially by conference affiliation.

Navy teeters on that financial benefit now. It was part of the decision making process. Would it be financially beneficial to be conference affiliated and lose scheduling control. Right now it is not, with respect to the Big East offer. Navy has a CBS Sports TV contract. The Big East has an ESPN contract that runs out next year. The unknowns regarding how the TV rev would be split and what the cost would be to break future Navy obligations make it not worthwhile to be in a conference.

    It's hardly about "feelings".

yet you continue to thump your Big East chest about wins over the ACC...
LOL, this. Chest thumping wins over Oregon St. and the ACC. LOL, the ACC is just as bad as the Big East. But I will give the ACC the nod since they have 2 teams that are currently in the conference that have won a BCS title. No team currently in the Big East has ever even played in a BCS title game. I don't care if Miami won while they were in the BE, the BE could be considered good then. They don't have Miami now, therefore they can't rep them now (not that they'd want to).

And Oregon St.? Jesus, I couldn't even tell you what bowl they have been raped in without looking it up. Since Riley has been coach there (2003) here is the Oregon St. records.:

    2003: 8-5
    2004: 7-5
    2005: 5-6
    2006: 10-4
    2007: 9-4
    2008: 9-4
    2009: 8-5
    2010: 5-7
    2011: 3-9

Not a BCS powerhouse to be boasting a win over. The years Cincy beat Oregon St. the Beavers were 8-5 and 9-4. Not horrible, but no powerhouse either. Hell, Tennessee raped Cincy this year by 3 scores! LOL.

Not real sure why you are comparing the point differential in a blowout loss to Florida to being equal to Ohio State's blowout loss to Florida. The difference is Ohio State doesn't need to prove that they are a worthy program in a respectable conference. And if they did they would use blowout losses as comparisons and justifications! LOL

That's debatable outside of Miami and Virginia Tech.

Didn't UC join the Big East when Miami, BC, and VT left?
  • The Equalizer
Now, if they're coming in 2013 is that right after Pitt/WVU leave or do they get to play them for one season?

There would be one season with 13 teams. Including Syracuse Pittsburgh and WVU.
  • The Equalizer
I wonder if the BE will schedule WVU, Pitt, and Syracuse to go to on the road to all the new teams as a final fuck you to them.

A&M just hired Sumlin. Now houston is a complete unknown and could end up being a nothing addition to the BE

They could be good without sumlin. There are many examples of teams playing well after losing a high profile coach. Utah looked pretty damn good after Urban Meyer left as an example.
  • Little Danny
Art Briles (baylor coach) was turning things around in Houston before Sumlin got there. If they get the right coach they"ll be ok.

Yes, I believe it was the very next season.

Navy has decided to join the Big East. They just aren't ready now.....2013 seems to work though. Sell outs.

Did you read the article? There's nothing new in there than what has been stated above.

They likely "won't" join in 2013.

"... but likely won't do so in 2013..."

"...How quickly Navy joins the Big East will depend mainly on how long it takes the Midshipmen to restructure their future schedules, bowl and television contracts. Navy has games scheduled through 2018, bowl contracts through 2017 and television contracts with CBS College Sports and CBS Sports (Army-Navy game) through 2018, Gladchuk said...."

"... we have a better television deal than a lot of conferences," "Navy AD" Gladchuk said. "We can't do that without a mutual understanding with the Big East. The good news is [Big East commissioner] John [Marinatto] has been receptive of talking this through."..."

"...The only question is when? "
