Akron Head Coach fired over the phone while driving to mother's funeral?
-
GoPensThe only reason for Tressel to consider Akron is to get hired there, take whatever NCAA sanctions are leveled against him and when they're over and behind him, go get a job at a bigger, better school.
-
Pick6Heard Toledo's OC has been contacted. If they are going to try to get an OC...I'd at least hope they get one from a bigger school. Still want somebody with previous HC experience.

Haven't heard that yet, Matt Campbell? He's got a bunch of Ohio ties and has landed some big time recruits at UT over the last year. I think he'd be a good fit.Pick6;992170 wrote:Heard Toledo's OC has been contacted. If they are going to try to get an OC...I'd at least hope they get one from a bigger school. Akron isn't going to be able to go out and get a big time OC like Toledo did with Beckman. They don't have the facilities, likelihood of advancement, and probably not the financial resources. -

Ha, I remember him walking around the field house my first year at Mount. That's quite a fast track he's on. From Mount to Akron HC in 7 seasons.dave;993272 wrote:Haven't heard that yet, Matt Campbell? He's got a bunch of Ohio ties and has landed some big time recruits at UT over the last year. Akron has some of the best facilities in the MAC and has the money.dave;993272 wrote:

have you seen akron's facilities? probably some of the best in the mac. also, with all the improvements they've made to that school, i'm pretty sure they are printing money somewhere. i don't think the question is whether or not they have the financial resources or not. i'd say it's more of a question if they want to use them or notdave;993272 wrote:Akron isn't going to be able to go out and get a big time OC like Toledo did with Beckman. From what I have been told they do not have money. They are not getting near the income they had expected when they built the stadium. They also don't have an arena that can draw big money both in terms of size and luxury boxes/ preferred/vip seating.Pick6;993395 wrote:Akron has some of the best facilities in the MAC and has the money. -

Donors are willing to fork over the extra money if it means they are getting a big name. Do they have Tressel money? I really don't know. It will probably be the deal breaker there. But they have the money to get some OC from a D1 program. If they want to get the income they expected, they will hire a proven head coach, which is what they are trying to do. There are plenty of luxury boxes/VIP seating at the Info.dave;993510 wrote:From what I have been told they do not have money. What interview? All over Twitter and Facebook they were saying Tressel was on campus today having an interview. Now it is tomorrow.Pick6;993406 wrote:More people from Canton read the ABJ than the Suppository, they are real credible. Interview is tomorrow anyways.

What is it? Again, he has no reason to coach there. He donated $1 million to YSU to construct the WATSON AND TRESSEL TRAINING SITE. This facility was built so YSU would be able to out-recruit Akron, Kent, and other FBS schools.
So what would Tressel tell a recruit choosing between YSU and Akron? What is he going to say when a recruit asks him why is your name on a building over there?
This makes NO sense! -

right twitter and facebook are more reliable than my source (which has been 100% accurate on everything he's ever told me) Also have a football player that told me he is interviewing tomorrow.. Editor's note: We wanted our UA community to be aware of an important message that our director of athletics sent to fans and supporters of Zips athletics. As you know, we announced Saturday evening that Rob Ianello will not return as our head football coach. Coach Ianello and his staff worked hard for our football program, and I am appreciative of their efforts.
These decisions are never simple. The evaluation process that we conduct for all 19 of our varsity teams is ongoing and comprehensive. Coach Ianello and I communicated constantly during his tenure, and we had many conversations over the final weeks of the season regarding the future of our football program, including in the days leading up to our last game. I was aware that Coach's mother had passed away earlier that week and of his travel arrangements, but we talked after Friday's game and agreed that it would be best that I share with him my decision once it was final. I called him as soon as possible on Saturday to inform him that we would move in a new direction.
In the end, I determined that this decision is in the best interest of our student-athletes and our football program. While we have improved in academics, compliance and our community involvement – and we will continue to emphasize those areas – we also believe and aspire to be more competitive on the field. I know all Zips fans are eager to see our team succeed as well.
As we look ahead to the next chapter of Zips Football, it will be important that everyone associated with The University of Akron welcome the new coach and his staff to our University and the Akron community. I know our fans are looking forward to learning who will lead our program, and I ask for your support – especially by purchasing season tickets and attending games – so that we can build a championship program together.
We already have begun our search process, which will move as quickly as possible while we do our due diligence to ensure we identify the best candidate. Even though the 2011 season is over, we are mindful that, because of recruiting, this is still an important time in our college football calendar.
I welcome your feedback as part of the process. As always, you can contact me with any suggestions you have, whether it is specific candidates or just characteristics that you feel are important for our next coach to possess. While I may not respond to every submission, please know that I will read all of them. I also will not comment publicly on the search until we announce our new head coach.
As I told our nearly 100 football student-athletes, the future is bright for Zips Football and I am excited for them and for this new opportunity. There is a great amount of interest in this position, and we will identify a terrific leader to guide our program.
Thank you for your support of Zips Athletics. I look forward to introducing you to the next leader of Akron Football.
Go Zips!

and LOL at you thinking the Watson and Tressel training site is going to out recruit Akron. Have you seen our field house? -
Pick6oh yeah, mvred, the Suppository took the "article" is just a blog post with some guy posting his opinion. No facts.
I know its hard for you Youngstown fans to fathom that Tressel could have even the slightest interest in the Akron job, but he does. So get over it. -

I heard you Akron fans claiming you would average 20,000 season ticket holders and pack Infocision every week. And yes, I do think the WATTS will out-recruit your field house. Recruits want to play for WINNERS and have a chance at CHAMPIONSHIPS. They can do just that here in Youngstown State. -

Has YSU won a championship since Tressel left? Don't think so. Are there many players turning D1 to play FCS? Don't think so. Better yet, has YSU stolen any recruits from Akron this year with their new little fieldhouse? one Offensive Guard. Big whoop. -

The JAR does not have a lot of vip seating. BBall is their only money making sport but they can't maximize their profits there. I know what Info has, but when it's empty it doesn't matter. Who are these donors that will fork over money? The on campus facilities they have can be used by the general student body which is why they can get those built easier.Pick6;993532 wrote:Donors are willing to fork over the extra money if it means they are getting a big name. 2011: Sir Aaron Taylor, Ian Folmar, Demond Hymes (who someone on ZN guaranteed he would go there). 2010 had some more with D'Alesio, Larson, Franklin, and one other OL from what I was told.Pick6;994474 wrote:As for this, dont categorize what one Akron fan says into what all Akron fans think.
