Ohio State self-imposes 5 scholarship reduction for Failure to Monitor

Lol, your post comes off as if it was stated in a press release. OSU is definitely considering it, and has been for some time. It also goes hand-in-hand with naming a new coach. It would be extremely difficult for OSU to hire an outside guy, such as Urban Meyer, and have said coach hire a staff and implement an offense in three weeks of practice. Further, self-imposing the ban this year would virtually eliminate the chance for any bowl ban next year, therefore making the recruiting trail much easier.

Huh? They would actually have to fire Fickell and the staff for that to occur. His contract goes through Jan 31 2012. I don't think they are going to fire Fickell. He will either be renewed or not. The most likely scenario would be a lame duck staff.

I'll see if I can find a link. But here is what was reported...
Danny Sheridan was interviewed on the Sirius college football channel on Wednesday afternoon and reported a conversation with a high-ranking BCS official at the meetings held earlier this week.

It's being reported that both Penn State and Ohio State are considering decisions to forego participation in bowl games this season. The reasons for Penn State are pretty obvious, other than the fact that the bowls represented at the meeting were concerned that they would have to take Penn State even if they didn't want them for their game. The reason for a possible Ohio State decision is that their administration feels that if they "self discipline" themselves by not going to a bowl game, they will soften the penalties eventually handed down by the NCAA. The Big Ten is concerned because of the possible financial impact on conference bowl revenue.

Decisions by both schools are expected before the end of the regular season.

The BCS and the NCAA are concerned that with the absence of those two schools, there will ceertainly not be enough bowl eligible teams to fill the 72 slots for bowl games. In that case, the NCAA would have to approve teams with 5-7 records to fill the needed bowl slots.

OSU isn't going to wait until January 31 to hire a coach. It will be done within relatively short order after the Michigan game. OSU is also pushing for a conference call with the NCAA COI on November 28. If they get a feeling that more penalties are to come, the easy way is to hire a coach then self-impose a bowl ban. This virtually assures no additional penalties for the new coach.

I don't think its worth risking a 2012 season bowl ban for a mid-level bowl game with a lame duck staff.

Doesn't mean they can't hire someone if they tell Fickell that his contract will not be renewed. They are not going to fire him though (aka ending the contract early)

Really? First I've heard of them considering a self-ban.

I hope OSU goes to a bowl game this year and the next 100+ years. Let's win it, and go home and figure out why we didn't win the championship this year. Anything less is a failure.

fuck self bans--they don't seem to make a difference anyway

When will these people realize that the serial mea culpa routine a) makes them look like clowns and b) will do nothing at all to improve the end result with the NCAA?
  • WebFire
^^ I agree with both of the above.

I disagree. A self-ban would force the NCAA to institute a two year bowl ban for the violations in order for a bowl ban to exist in 2012. USC got a two year bowl ban for LOIC and FTM. The OSU violations do not call for a two year ban. In fact, I doubt they would get a bowl ban out of what they currently are facing. However, to ensure that 2012 will not be affected, they would institute the ban now.

So, who thinks Smith will lose his job? Not if Gee has any say.

After the way Gee and Smith handled the Tressel debacle, I don't think his opinion of the AD is going to have any bearing on the BoT's (Les Wexner's) decision.

As soon as the new coach is hired they will pay Fickell the balance of his contract and thank him for holding the team together.

USC had SEVENTY-THREE NCAA violations, Ohio State a handful.

USC had SEVENTY+ NCAA violations. Ohio State has a handful. Why would the NCAA prefer a bowl ban next year instead of this year???

They would not send him packing before a bowl game. Of course after the bowl game, he would be looking for another job, so I don't think those 30some days really matter.

    Um, what?

USC violations were in the $100,000's....OSU < $10,000 TOTAL.

Watching the players play on the field the last two weeks looks like they are trying to enforce their own bowl ban, who the fuck would want to invite them?

Yeah, Gee also was hoping that Tressel wouldn't fire him. Gee just needs to keep his mouth shut. After the "little sisters of the poor" comment, the Tressel presser and now this, he is looking more and more like a bonehead and not the president of The Ohio State University.

Don't worry, 76% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Ohio State needs to learn from the SEC schools-1) Do not self report anything 2) Do not admit anything 3) Do not self impose penalties 4) NCAA would have little or no proof of anything-go on your merry way.
I think both Gee and Smith will be gone when all is complete. Smith fired Gee retired.
If they lose the next 2 games which easily could happen, who would want them in a Bowl and why would they want to go? (to lose to a 2nd rate MAC, or Mountain West team) or worse a Conference USA team.
I know that you're going to say a lot of Bowls would want them because of their fanbase but If they end up in the Pizza Bowl do you really think that OSU fans would show up for that?
All this being said, I still think that OSU will beat Penn State and the Michigan game will be a toss-up, which if they beat Michigan could put them in a decent Bowl
