So...about the Stagg-Paterno Trophy...

  I was thinking about that earlier. The funny thing is, I remember alot of us saying it should have been named after Tress.
  
  Easy solution. Get rid of all the names for the trophies. It was pretentious and stupid just like the Legends and Leaders nonsense. Just call it the "Big 10 Championship Trophy"

  Agreed. The whole thing is a joke. Call the divisions Lakes and Plains, and make the championship trophy standardized.

  I like how the trophies are named to honor legends of the conference, but it may be best for the conference to rename it. Stagg-Osborn maybe, even though Tom Osborn never coached in the B1G (although most of Paterno's success came before Penn State was in the B1G). The only bad thing about naming trophies after people is that you can't ever really change them even if someone more deserving comes along. What if some B1G running back breaks all of the national all-time records at some point in the future. Even though the trophy should bear his name, they aren't going to remove someone else's name to add his. It's nice for honoring past legends, but doesn't leave much room for future legends.

  Osbourne? Why not Hayes? One of the most successful B1G coaches ever.

  Because the coach of the year trophy is already named for Hayes. Since Hayes and Schembechler won more conference championships than any other coaches in B1G history, you have to put both of their names together on the same trophy and it either has to be the COTY or championship trophy. You can't name both trophies after both of them and you can't really put Hayes on both either. That's why I suggested Osborne as a replacement. He stands for everything the B1G does, he was an incredibly successful coach, and is now a B1G athletic director.
  
  For Sleeper, Paul Brown only coached for three years in the Big Ten.
  
  I think that Fielding Yost and Hayden Fry would also be good candidates to replace the Paterno name on the trophy.

  That is 3 more than Osborne coached in the Big Ten. I don't think either of their names should be on it, but Brown deserves it more than Osborne does.

  I only suggested Osborne because they already named one of the trophies after a former Nebraska player (I'm not sure which one and I'm too lazy at the moment to look it up). When naming all of the trophies they wanted to make sure that the current 12 members of the conference were all represented, even if some of those who were represented never actually played in the conference. When Nebraska joined the B1G this year the conference inherited all of their history, not just what they do from this point forward, just as they inherited Penn State's history when they joined in 1993 and MSU's history when they joined in 1953.

  I think it is a stretch to consider Nebraska history prior to this year as part of Big Ten history. I don't consider Nebraska's national titles in the 90's as a Big Ten team winning the national title.

  You are correct that you wouldn't claim Nebraska's national title's pre-2011 as part of the national championships won by the Big Ten conference, but you would say that B1G member Nebraska claims five national titles.
  
  Also, the B1G set a precedent when they named the award for the best tight end after Ted Kwalick who played at Penn State in the late 1960's, the offensive lineman of the year award after Dave Rimington who played at Nebraska in the early 1980's, and the championship trophy after Stagg who coached at a school that hasn't been a member of the B1G since 1946 and Paterno who won fewer B1G championships in 17 years than Jim Tressel did in nine years (as a comparison). While you may not agree with it, by the precedent established by the conference when they initially named the trophies, Osborne is as viable a candidate to have the trophy named after him as any other former coach at any of the 12 B1G schools.

  You could go old school with Bernie Bierman. 7 Big 10 titles and 5 national championships in a 10 year span.

  If there is anything that 2011 should've showed B1G leadership, it's that it's not necessary to attach bells and whistles to everything to make it flashy. They end up making a lot of noise that isn't liked and seem pretty stupid in the end.
  
  It is not necessary to name the trophies and Leaders/Legends has become a national joke. End it now, Delany.
