So...about the Stagg-Paterno Trophy...

Why not put Kirk Ferentz's name on it? I'm told every year, that he is the best coach in the B1G.

He's now the longest tenured coach in the B1G, followed by (drum roll) . . . Ron Zook.

    The Zook-Ferentz sounds good.

Added bonus: it begins and ends with a Z

I will be very surprised if the conference does not change this -- and disappointed.

When all those different trophy names were first announced, I thought it was a dumb idea. I still do. It's a childish attempt to "honor" individuals from schools who accomplished great things -- and do it in a way that all schools are equally represented.

Well, all schools are not equal on the field or off, and not every school has been in the league for the same amount of time. Not to mention: if the league expands again, are we going to have to create another trophy or trophies to make sure they also get represented?

    Truly a stupid idea.

Almost as stupid as the division names.

First of all, it's not like naming the trophies after great players is some novel idea. Almost all individual awards in college football are named for great players, so what the B1G did is actually very logical.

Second, not all schools are represented equally. They are all represented, but not equally.

    Ohio State - 5
    Michigan - 4
    Wisconsin - 4
    MSU - 3
    Illinois - 3
    Penn State - 3
    Purdue - 3
    Minnesota - 3
    Iowa - 2
    Northwestern - 2
    Indiana - 2
    Nebraska - 1
    Chicago - 1

I do agree that it seems odd they would name them all with the possibility of future expansion, but at this point, unless they are adding Notre Dame or Texas I really don't see them expanding again.

Third, I agree with you about the division names. Even though they have grown on me a bit they are still dumb. I still think they should be the Midwest and Heartland divisions.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Stagg-Tressel trophy sometime soon.
  • Tobias Fünke
A ton of other people who follow the rules would mind see that though. There is no way a coach who was forced to resign because he tried to hide NCAA violations will be on that trophy.

Tressel retired. He did not resign. He protected his players, that is more honorable than following the rules of a ridiculous power hungry organization like the NCAA. Tressel faced a lot of adversity, and persevered; and that is championship quality.

Yes, sleeper knows that. Which is why he posted it.

This is a good lesson as to why you don't name things after people while they are actively still engaged in the activity. It generally seems like a safe thing to do (e.g. Coach K Court), but the downside risk is immense.

Well now Zook is out so there's one less possible to put on any new or revised trophies.

It's not been announced yet, but everyone is reporting that multiple sources at the school have confirmed that the decision to remove him has already been made.

Here's an article about the name being removed from the trophy.

^^^thanks...I was aware of the name change, it's just that the post about Zook caught me off guard (not that he would ever be considered anyway)

Yeah, I guess my post was a bit confusing. The first paragraph was about Zook being fired, not about Peterno's name being taken off the trophy.

Ha, exactly. The fact posters continue to respond to his posts is hilarious.
