  He gave the university the legal right and the moral excuse to give the appearance of "Hey we are serious about cleaning this stuff up" and to let him go. That said, I think they made a mistake forcing him out.

  Bingo. I think Tressel was ready to take the punishments (bowl bans, scholarship reductions, etc.) and stick with the program and help bring it back, unlike some others who saw the dark clouds on the horizon and bolted to greener pastures. I wish I had the link from back when JT resigned to a blog saying OSU made a mistake (I think Writerbuckeye posted it).

  I still wonder about JT resigning and then Pryor bolting. There may be more to it than we know. It looked really bad to me at the time with all the accusations. He may have known more than we'll ever find out. From what I know to be a FACT so far, I still wish that Tressel was the coach.

  Yeah it was bad for awhile. But my understanding of the situation is the powers that be were no longer willing to stick behind JT and so they asked him to resign, not that he said, "Oh crap, they're about to find out more stuff!" Otherwise he would've stepped down back in March.
  
  The further we get from Memorial Day, the more I think he should still be the coach. That sentiment is subject to change however.

  ^^^As am I. If I remember correctly the thing that seemed to trigger the loss of support from the board was the rumors that were swirling around the cars. Those deals, which have now been shown to be legitimate, were signed off on by the compliance dept. The board may well have overreacted to media exaggeration and canned JT thinking that more was amiss at compliance when in fact, there wasn't.

  I agree with this. I mentioned back when he resigned and TP quit that there must be something to the rumors, because you wouldn't suddenly fire your coach and have your star QB quit after supporting them for months, unless there was a reason.
  
  Perhaps they felt he would ultimately needed to be fired after the NCAA sanctions, and wanted to get on with it and get an interim coach named. Perhaps the timing was coincidence. Hard to really tell at this point.

  For what it's worth, I have a Ryan Stamper game used jersey. Got it through ebay, so it's hard for me to tell who it came from. I will say that I got it after Stamper left Florida. He was one of my favorite Florida players.

  The fact that ESPN is just now joining the fray tells you all you need to know about the intelligence and quality of their "investigative journalism" department (unit or whatever). Pathetic.
  
  I hope all those players and others she contacts tell her to go back to Bristol and make something up, just like the SI reporter did. It'll be better reading.
  
  As for your discussion above about why JT left when he did (and Pryor), I think it's pretty simple: the Board of Trustees were hoping by letting JT go the frequency and intensity of media stories would lessen. It has, to a degree. But obviously both SI and ESPN are still digging (probably the Dispatch, too).
  
  Honestly, I think they overreacted to what was going on and the constant drumbeat of columns (mostly) and stories was simply too much for their nerves. It was like a game of chicken and the trustees flinched.
  
  As for Pryor...I think he probably knew if he stayed and had to answer questions, the remainder of his eligibility would be gone, anyway. There's little doubt in my mind that he took enough other benefits to get him suspended for the remainder of his career. So why stick around and put yourself through that when you can try to go the supplemental route and get paid in the process?
  
  Bottom line: I think unless something else in the way of proof shows up between now and August when the NCAA comes back, OSU is looking at vacating the past season and the penalties they've already instituted. I don't see any loss of scholarships, bans or anything else. If that's going to happen, the NCAA will have to rework their letter of allegations and put in failure to monitor or loss of control, neither of which is included in the original allegations.
  
  Once again IF it turns out that nothing more is proven, then the Board made a mistake getting rid of Tressel the way they did. He could have been suspended for the season and come back, and I don't believe it would have hurt OSU in any way, shape or form so far as its national reputation goes -- mostly since the hack jobs of SI and others so far have pretty much tarnished it to the point that people think OSU is constantly cheating, anyway. May as well keep your Hall of Fame coach if that's the case.
