Tressel has resigned

Miami, MSU, Nebraska, Wisconsin and maybe PSU.
Just my thoughts. Next year is going to be rough.

It could go either way imo. I could see the kids rally behind Fickel and playing with an "us vs the world" mentality. OSU still has more talent than anyone else in the Big 10.

Maybe, or maybe the players dedicate the season to Tressel and play above expectations. It's not like Tressel resigning all of a sudden makes them less talented. I see them losing Nebraska and maybe one other game. I do not see them losing to Miami or Wisconsin and certainly not to PSU.

I'll take off my foil hat when you take off yours.

Lol. If there was a cover up (Tress sent an email to Smith) it would have come out when the media was looking at all of the emails. Somebody would have run with that story. Stop kidding yourself.

If there was a cover up, Tress would not have been forced to resign because Smith would have known that Tress could have used evidence on him. Smith wouldn't be the guy with the big stick because he would know that Tress could roll over on him. If anything he would be going the extra mile to make sure Tress is still in line

It just goes on and on

They do have a lot of talent, especially defensively. But QB and WR could be problem areas and those positions are key for success. If Miller plays well, we'll be fine, but it all just depends on him

    I guarantee tressel coaches again.

Next year is a wash. Personally wish we could fast forward past next year. I am looking more forward to basketball personally. With the tattoo 5 coming back...even as an OSU fan, its going to be hard to root for those 5 to be successful. I think we could hear some major booing from OSU stadium when they trot onto the field.

Not as much as you may think though. Given the talent on the O-Line and in the backfield (and especially if Miller is the QB), I could see OSU going with a heavy running attack the first few games. Given the schedule, I don't see any reason why that couldn't be successful.

I hope so. TP and Posey are pieces of garbage

Well... obviously they will be fine in the first few games, it's the middle of the schedule I am worried about.

Doubtful IMO. He is close to 60yrs of age already. And, with what he did with NCAA...I believe they can ding him as well as any school that tries to hire him for a certain amount of years. But maybe there is a D3 school looking for a coach. ;) (Jim O'Brien)

I truly believe that Tress is done. I'm sure this whole situation embarrasses him and I think he'll go into hiding for the next couple of years. By then he will be pretty old.
  • j_crazy
I don't mean head coaching only. He could be an assistant somewhere. Just that he's not done.

Right, because all communications are via some form of media, e-mail, tweets and facebook...smh

If you're smart they are. If there is something I am telling my boss, I'm doing it via email so I can cover my ass if it ever comes back on me. That's just common sense.

Ok... even if they did use a carrier pigeon to communicate, I can assure you that Tress wouldn't allow himself to be tarred and feathered by the media if he did everything by the book. You think he is going to allow Gene Smith to take money from him, suspend him, make him the scapegoat, and then force his resignation if he was completely innocent? I can assure that that Tress would be fighting this and would have been "fired" and would not have resigned peacefully.

Also, if Tress was smart, he would have used email to alert Gene Smith so that he had evidence. He also would have got compliance in the loop as well. None of those people are going keep quiet if that were the case.

    Seriously, use common sense man.

True, but taking the Jim Tressel "persona" at face value, honor, integrity, honesty...why would he feel the need to cover his ass? If he is what has been portrayed in the past, why would him walking into Smith's office to discuss shit seem out of character, quite the contrary, sending him an e-mail is diametrically opposed to his character (as has been portrayed).

After all of this, it is apparent that Tress doesn't have as much integrity or honesty as we thought he did.

He's a dummy if he didn't forward that email

Here's what I wrote on this site back on April 26th:

As many of you know, PR and communications are strong in my professional background.

That's why I'll be very surprised if Tressel doesn't resign.

    Why?

Because the media is head-hunting and they aren't going to be happy until he's gone.

Tressel became a target of the media very early on because of two things: (1) he's not very open about his team, practices, etc., and he's very good at dodging questions he doesn't want to answer. They hate that. Also (2) he has written several books about character, doing the right thing, etc., which are all admirable goals. The media doesn't see it that way, however, and think of him as being arrogant and self-righteous.

They've wanted to bring him down for some time -- and he not only opened the door, he blew the damn thing off its hinges.

With blood now in the water, they won't be happy until he gets axed or steps aside, and you'll continue to see the nasty columns that have been dominating since this all came about.

Think about it: have you seen this many columns calling for a college football coach's head EVER in the past 5 years or more? I can't recall any.

Even when USC was facing FAR more egregious violations in both its basketball and football programs, you didn't see the constant string of columns and radio hosts calling for Petey to be fired. Of course, when most of that was FINALLY put into a letter to USC, he was already packing his bags to flee to Seattle.

We now know that the earliest anything will happen with the NCAA is August, and it likely won't even be for a few months after that, depending on possible appeals.

I don't see OSU's bigwigs...the big money folks who pull most of the strings behind the scenes...putting up with a constant onslaught of bad PR between now and then. And it WILL continue, because these guys want Tressel GONE and they won't be happy until he is. As such, I see him finally being pressured into resigning to prevent continued damage to the school's reputation.

Right or wrong (I think he's being unfairly targeted) I think his career at OSU is going to end sometime this year.

Oh my gosh. Tress broke rules. For breaking rules you get punished. If he didn't break rules there wouldn't be anything for reporters to dig up. Please stop typing that crap it makes my head want to explode.
  • stlouiedipalma
Somehow I just knew it would come to this. I appreciate what Tress did for the university, restoring the pride, making the Michigan game important again, all the bowl appearences and the NC. Unfortunately, he brought it all upon himself. I agree that we will never know the whole story, but it could have been avoided and Tress has paid the price. It's a sad day for TOSU, but we will recover.

Now the head coaching rumors can begin. Sadly, we will have to hear about them for a whole year unless Luke goes undefeated.

Where did I say he didn't break the rules or that he didn't open this door himself to be fried? I very clearly did.

My POINT is that the pressure from the media stories was going to be too much for him to survive this, and it clearly was.

Remember: both Gee and Smith were firmly behind keeping him as a coach when this first broke.
  • stlouiedipalma
You're correct, Writer. The blood was in the water and the sharks had to feed. I'm surprised he lasted this long since the story first broke. Can you imagine how it would have been after he returned from the suspension?

I'm just getting tired of hearing he is "being unfairly targeted"

We broke rules. Time to take the medicine
