Greg Paulus on staff with Ohio St

No doubt he's very bright and he was an excellent player. If he can translate that into coaching, he'll be a gem.

Matta has had very nice success in developing assistant coaches who go on to coach -- so there's not much reason to doubt him in this selection.

Duke grad = A/V team. A certain symmetry to that.

too bad he's exhausted his football eligibility--we could've used him for the first five games this year

Compared to me and you, or compared to other high D1 basketball players?
  • Writerbuckeye
So now you have to be a super stud ONLY to be called an excellent player?

He played well enough to earn national recognition as a freshman, all tournament honors one year and was 3rd team all conference as a senior, and was an academic all star his whole career. That qualifies as excellence in my book.

You can be an excellent player for your team without being everyone's all star.

was 3rd team all conference as a senior,
Are you sure about this?? Paulus was benched his senior year and only started 5 games and averaged 16.1 minutes per game. I don't think averaging 4.9 ppg and shooting 37% from the field would get a player all ACC anything.

Paulus' career was average at best and his numbers tell that story. He was known for flopping and getting beat off of the dribble. I am sure he was a great teammate, but he wasn't an excellent basketball player.

I do think he will work his ass off for Matta and OSU. He is highly competitive.

    Paulus' stat line:

^^^ you are correct, but he was named 3rd team Academic All America...and I also think he'll be a nice addition to Matt's staff

Good God, are we really going to quibble about all this? He's obviously a very bright guy and had enough talent to play college basketball (and football for one year) at the highest level.

I swear, some people on here will look for anything to argue about.

If facts are posted, there is no quibbling. You posted erroneous information that needed to be corrected.

Yeah Paulus was far from "excellent"

I can't believe people on here are claiming that a starting point guard for an acc team that twice won league titles under his watch is not an excellent basketball player.
  • Prescott
claiming that a starting point guard for an acc team that twice won league titles under his watch is not an excellent basketball player.
Maybe, because they watched him play and understand why he lost his starting position as a senior.

To a better player. It doesn't make him any worse of one. He led the acc in assists per game for two years. How is that not qualification.

Most great coaches were not great players, sooo if he was not a "great" player that could work to his advantage. There are over 300 D-1 Basketball schools, he could have started for 90% of them which again has absolutely nothing to do with his ability to become good coach. Appears to be a good addition at this point.
  • Prescott

A qualification for What? We arguing are semantics, but I don't think that an "EXCELLENT" senior player is benched in favor of a better player .Paulus was a smart player who probably got the most from his ability, but his inability to defend drops him from the excellent list.
  • Prescott
Maybe he will teach OSU players how to take a charge.

One of the most boring yet most important assistant coaching positions. You gotta be kind of a loner and bookworm to enjoy it.

Nothing wrong with this in my eyes. anytime a guy plays that well with his size and ability, he has to have a high basketball IQ.

I think I'll trust Matta judgement in terms of hiring coaches. He has done a pretty amazing job if you look at all that have moved on to be head coaches somewhere. He has done nothing but surround himself with excellent people in terms of coaching.
  • Prescott
I think this was an easy hire. PaulUs was not ultra talented , but found a way to compete by working hard and playing smart. I have no doubt he will bring those qualities to his job at t OSU.

Looks like Brandon Miller has left the staff. Wonder if Paulus will be moving up already?

Heard this on radio this morning. Tough loss as far as coaching staff. I think Miller fit in real well with Matta staff. We'll see what Matta does with Paulus. He doesn't have much experience. I would be thinking he may look for someone with a bit of experience as he grooms Paulus. We'll see....
  • Writerbuckeye
We're getting ready for a big portion of the recruiting season, and I don't think Paulus has that very strong in his background. I'd say Matta probably will be looking for someone else who can help bring kids to Columbus now, and will groom Paulus for openings that happen another couple years down the road.
