There is no "March Madness" if they just vote and decide it that way. And what college basketball fan doesn't love the NCAA tourney?

I love the tourney, and yes, UConn did win it--but I prefer to call them the Tournament Champion, not the National Champion....just because I can

The thing about the NCAA tourney is the fact that the #1 seed really doesn't have much of an advantage due to misseeding. It wasn't fair to UK or OSU to be playing each other in a Sweet Sixteen game as UK should've been a 2(3 at worst). The NCAA gets too caught up in location, which doesn't allow them to seed teams fairly. #1 seeds don't have the advantage that a 1 seed should. I don't think anyone would disagree that OSU would've been better off to be #2 seed in Pitts bracket than they were having the #1 in the East.

    Exactly.

Well, anybody can call Uconn whatever they want but the fact of the matter is they are the 2010-11 national champion in division 1 men's college basketball. There is no regular season NCAA championship awarded.

Does the best team always win the NCAA tourney? Obviously not. But whoever wins it always earns the right to be called the national champions. That's official. And if your team won it all in any scenario (but for the sake of this discussion let's say in a scenario similar to Uconn's).....they'd deserve it too. I don't think any Ohio State fans (or other fans in that situation for that matter) would be downplaying the NCAA tourney had the Buckeyes had the season Uconn did and then won the national title. Something tells me them being referred to as the tournament champion and not national champion wouldn't go over well on here.

I'm not trying to pick with you, vball. You're a good poster. But I have my opinion the same as you have yours.

Wrong, I downplay single elimination tournaments all the time. I did all fall during the "BCS sucks, NCAA BBall tourny is so much better" rhetoric. I am not a fan of single elimination tournaments at all.

I stand corrected then. I should have used "many" or "most" instead of "any."

One pundit said it the other day.....

We crown a National Champion. The winner of the tournament is called the National Champion. We dont call them the best team in the country. Many assume that, but a Super BOwl Champ is a SB champ, NCAA champ the same.......

There is no perfect way to do it, but I think a tournament is still the fairest way (unles ya go to best-of tournaments like MLB, NHL and NBA). the point of the regular season, in all sports, is to narrow down the field and include the most deserving to play it out on the playing surface. In college and HS sports there are too many teams to really have a balanced schedule, and fair schedule, to adequately say who really is the best.

So...the regular season is used to whittle it down and postseason to play it out.

Still better than the BCS if you ask me.

Need to get a new banner hanging from the Schott. Have a big ceremony before the first game next year. Invite Northern Arizona's coach to be there. Afterward The Gordon Gee can take the Northern Arizona coach out for dinner and tea.

The NCAA tourney is my favorite sporting event to watch, however, it's not even a tourney w/ the 68 best teams, which immediately skews the results. I don't want them to change it, because it's extremely entertaining, but to say that the winner of the tourney is the best team in the country is absurd.

    Tournament Champion = National Champion
    National Champion =/= Best Team

cute...but I believe I posted that I prefer to call them Tournament Champion, and I believe that's my prerogative--so there you have it

Disagree. I don't believe the National Champion = Best Team. In a one and done format, the best team does not always win.

He said that the National Champion does not equal the best team.

=/= means "is not equal to".

The goal of competing isn't to be the best team. The goal is to win. As you have so eloquently explained, the are not the same thing. Competition is designed to determine the winners.

Gotcha...didn't see that at first glance.

Flip flop UCONN with Ohio State this year.

Let's say Ohio State loses their last 5 Big Ten games, lose 9 games total...all Big Ten games, finish about 6th in Big Ten, go on a run. Win Big Ten tournament, get a 3 seed in NCAA's, win the NCAA tournament. Would that change some people's mind about who the national champ is?

No, because the discussion here isn't who the champ is. UConn is the national champion. The discussion is about who the best team is and how the national champion is chosen.
