Pryor even sold a sportsmanship award from the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, along with his 2008 Big Ten championship ring. More egregious to Ohio State fans, he sold a "gold pants" trinket -- an iconic charm given to players who are a part of a victory over archrival Michigan. He may not be easily forgiven by Buckeyes fans who revere such traditions. Pryor must repay $2,500 for selling the three items.
Herron must repay $1,150 for selling his football jersey, pants and shoes for $1,000 and receiving discounted services worth $150.

Posey must repay $1,250 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,200 and receiving discounted services worth $50.

Adams must repay $1,000 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring. Thomas must repay $1,505 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,000, his 2008 gold pants for $350 and receiving discounted services worth $155.

Yeah Tiernan, that's exactly why I think he is a basically honest man, you have to go by what is fact not your own speculation. If more comes out then I'll have to admit that you were right, but for now deal in the known. As far as the cover up, I 100% agree with you that his part in it is far more serious than what the players did, but in the big scheme of all the crap that is happening in college football do you honestly believe that this story should be the biggest story in college football? That's my point, what about Auburn, a known cheater for years (no comedia coverage) It's because it involves Ohio Sate, a school that most (in the media) would love to tear down for any rinky dink nothing reason that they can find.

This is a trivial matter and could have easily been overlooked (small suspension to the players 2-3 games) until it was discovered that JT knew about it and said nothing. I still consider it a trivial matter but because it is OSU the media has given it equal or more coverage with the Reggie Bush incident and certainly more coverage than the Cam Newton pay to play deal with Auburn. I agree with those who think that this will eventually cost Tressel his job (I don't think it should but it will) Most people in other parts of the country who don't follow the story that closely assume that OSU was caught cheating, A. this has nothing to do with OSU and B. selling your own shit and getting free tattoos is hardly cheating to win football games. My hope is that this bullshit nothing story will go away but realistically I know it won't (the haters in the media, jealousy won't let it) and it will cost an honest man and good football coach his job.

Do you believe the Reggie Bush situation had anything to do with USC or that getting money from a third party after you've already enrolled and played at a school is cheating to win football games?

Personally, I don't give two shits about either situation. But from the NCAA's standpoint, if you allow even the slightest of this stuff to go on it opens the door for much, much larger things. The dollar amount or whose "own shit" it was in this one incident doesn't distinguish it from any other situation. You don't think that when recruits visit OSU (or anywhere else) that the players who make extra bucks here and there are telling recruits? And even if you can't say for sure in a specific situation, the opening for such does create an unfair advantage anywhere that it goes on. Schools and coaches are not going to be able to stop it, but it doesn't change the fact that it has to be stopped when exposed.

I agree with yiou, I guess I'm not doing a good job of making my point. Do you think that this story should be beat on every day on ESPN and other media outlets for 4 months? This is not the biggest story in college football or the worst thing that has gone on in that time period. OSU players and coach will get what they deserve, I don't question that. my point is if this were Nore Dame or an SEC school, this story would have died months ago. A lot of ESPN people are saying Bruce Pearl's punishment and Tressels should be the same, that is ridiculous, Pearl was guilty of recruitng violations and Tressel for not reporting free tattoos and players selling their jerseys, (not the same thing) And if tennessee had won a couple tournement games Pearl would not have been fired. And as far as Reggie Bush and USC, how could SC not have known? They aren.t stupid they just chose to ignore it,(same as JT) And Auburn and Cam Newton, Auburn and Cam knew nothing, Yeah right.

"But I know what he stands for and I know what he's about. So when I first heard about this, the first thing that entered my mind with this whole thing was that (OSU) president (Gordon) Gee and (athletic director) Gene Smith knew from Day 1, because Tressel is that type of person. He's very honest, very sincere and very loyal."

In fact, Johnson said "in the five years I worked with Jim Tressel, there's no gray area. There's no question about, 'Should we be doing this or doing that?' If there's any way that it teeters on breaking NCAA rules at all, that's not even an option for him. It's a no-brainer.

"So when all this came out, I'll tell you what, he didn't do anything. I mean sure, maybe did he protect his players and protect the program, etc. and etc.?

"But going in, I guarantee you he knew this was coming. He's the kind of person who will, first of all, do what's right, and also he will protect his university, his players and his coaches." So much so, noted Johnson, that Tressel "will take all the punishment, all the negativity and all the criticism.

Ha ha, saw this yesterday (local paper). I found the last paragraph the most interesting:
Johnson thinks too, especially with the FBI involved in the investigation, "there's no question there are some things with this that we will never know about," recalling "when I was there (at OSU) during the (Maurice) Clarett years. There's things now that I can't tell you that involved decisions and happenings that I know for a fact took place regarding the Clarett saga that will never be told."

Don't want to start a new thread because this is just a rumor, but is anyone a member on bucknuts who saw a thread about this???
An insider on the main OSU board posted that there is more bad news coming for OSU. Apparently, ESPN has been digging around and they are going to break a story in the next few days. Totally unrelated to Tatgate but according to this insider it is much, much worse. He described it as the worst thing imaginable.

He received a call from someone at 5AM this morning. This person is his direct source and said that the movers and shakers at OSU have been up all night trying to figure what to do about this situation.

The poster provided no other details. We'll see what happens I guess.

The thread has since been deleted from Bucknuts (at the request of the insider who originally posted it). Many other posts asking for more information about it have been locked and then deleted.

This isn't a rumor. A rumor is when someone says something like...."I heard from a confidential source that Tressel had an affair with with his secretary." A specific, that no one will confirm or can't be confirmed. There is no specific here. What we have is someone knows someone who said nothing about nothing.

    Definition of RUMOR
1: talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source

Good thing you didn't start a new thread. People tend to get testy if you do that.

As for the rumor...I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But the worst thing imaginable? I guess in terms of NCAA sanctions, payments to players are probably the worst thing imaginable. But I think if you dig enough into any program, you can find that.

I think they're ready to report that Urban Meyer has bought a house in the Columbus area, lol.

Seriously folks, an insider on the main OSU board at Bucknuts?

Point shaving? That is what is being posted on other sites but I think it is just some pissed off ex booster trying to start shit. Bucknuts never would have pulled the post if their was a chance of it being true.

Nemec remembers basically going numb when he heard Anderson had the same form of cancer as Cowgill. He also remembers his wife asking what he was going to do and needing to get some fresh air. A phone call to longtime friend and current Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman ensued. Bollman relayed the message to Tressel who quickly followed up.

“I said ‘Jim, I’m very emotional right now and I’m reaching out,’” Nemec said. “I told him (Ryan had) gotten 20 letters a day from colleges and that, ‘They’re going to stop abruptly. I gotta get something very positive and inspiring to him. I don’t know what you can do or what your limits are but I need some help.’

“Tressel said, ‘John, just go hug Ryan.’”

Days later, Anderson received a package addressed to him with over 100 hand-written letters from the entire Ohio State football program – coaches and players combined. Nemec made Anderson promise to read every one.

“The impact of getting over 100 letters from Ohio State was more meaningful than I think anyone will ever know,” Nemec said. “It just shows you the quality of leadership that the Ohio State football program has. Ohio State has a coach that gets it. (Tressel) understands.”

Doubt it. Tressel's actually got one of the best records against the spreads of any coach in college football.

I may not be a big Tressel fan on here lately but I would never buy into him doing anything like that. The man is all about image and even he knows that point shaving would be a death penalty for him and OSU, besides he wants to win at any cost as is the proof with all the problems he has been accused of recently so I don't ever see him being involved with Point Shaving or anything else in that category of violations.

I received some info late last night that turned out to be BAD Info. I Posted that there "Might be " some more bad info coming. My source is very well connected......their source turned out to be wrong........l

How many times did the word "EVER" appear in all caps in that post?

    Favorite part:
Some people have spread false lies saying I'm a RICH Booster
As opposed to true lies, or false truths??

No where in the story that was posted on Bucknuts does the guy say he heard it on a Pittsburgh Sports Radio Station while driving home. I will take credit for the story if it ends up being true. I don't even buy into that one.

Here's my opinion on Tressel, and I only root for the Buckeyes when they play Michigan or any SEC school -- of anything in college sports, I am anti-SEC.

I believe Tressel received the email, or at least caught wind of the "Tatgate." I believe that Tressel told Gene Smith, his superior. I think that Gene Smith knew all along. I believe that Gene and Tressel had conversations about the whole ordeal many of times. To me, there is no way, no how, a coach would brush something like this under the rug without telling his superior(s). That way, Gene Smith can have Tressel's back in times of need -- like the press conferences and such. If Tressel didn't tell Gene Smith, why should Gene have his back? It'd almost be just another dirty big-time college coach.

I would be very surprised if Gene Smith didn't know about this from day 1 and was talking with Tressel about the whole situation. That relationship would allow Tressel to keep his job, he had no control over what happened with the players selling items. If Tressel didn't have the relationship, there's probably no way he would keep his job.

To me, this is just another instance of the two-faced NCAA. They are awful with big time college athletics. This punishment for Tressel came in a matter of days. There is yet to be a punishment for something that is WAY more questionable for Bruce Pearl. There are numerous other instances that can be pointed out with this too.

I don't disagree with what you said, but the NCAA hasn't ruled on Tressel's situation, he was suspended by osu.
