Anyone else change their mind?

ernest_t_bassI don't see this as dirty, just stupid. He covered for some kids. He didn't pay players money to attend.

It pains me greatly to agree with anything ETB spouts but he's on target here. This whole mess... from the original selling of the memoribilia to Tressel's "cover-up" is only a series of very stupid choices. Nobody got paid off for enrolling and no criminal activity occurred. Did Tress refrain from telling his Boss and the NCAA for the purpose of keeping his chances at another NC alive?...I think yes most definitely. Now that he's been exposed as a hypocritical evangelist along the lines of a Jim Baker or Jimmy Swaggart, the University needs to make a choice...keep him and continue to be skewered in the natl. media or cut bait and unload the liar? But lying isn't necessarily criminal and maybe tOSU thinks it can weather the transgressions in return for Michigan victories. In terms of University fund raising the scUM victories will be hard to part with. -

He messed up and really tarnished the university. He should have to pay for more than 5 games in my view.
OSU is now lumped in with USC, Miami and FSU as dirty programs and that's not right at all.
Sorry, to say OSU is lumped in with USC, Miami and others is jsut flat out ignorant. If you choose to do that, so be it. What TRessel did, was obviously wrong. But this situation is bigger than what it should be, because of the person Tressel portrays himself to be..this squeeky clean, clean cut guy who never makes a mistake. Thats why he is, and rightfully so, being drug threw the mud more than other coaches have been. But what those others places did, namely USC...in reality, makes this look like a crum on a map. We are still talking about players selling a few items, for a few bucks for freaking tatoos. IT wasn't player and family living a multi million dollar home in LA, driving luxury cars, and an assistant coach involved, along with a basketball player being recruited with money! The haters will obviously continue to try to make this a bigger deal than what it is. But in reality, when you look at the actualy story...yes, rules were broken. But any moron knows how stupid those rules are (selling your OWN items) for nothing but a freaking tatoo. Tressel obviously has added to it by what he chose to do. A mistake obviously. But I would be MUCH more disturbed by many other issues to be honest. I was more disturbed with Clarrett, Smith and other players off the field issues , or if there were major recruiting violations. But again, I'll wait to see how this all plays out in the eyes of the NCAA. -

I agree. I thought VERY highly of O'Brien. And I view what he did ten fold over what is going on with Tressel. I don't like whats going on with Tressel, but O'Brien issues were MUCH more serious. But I learned never to say never after that. -

I don't make that connection, everyone else does. Here in DC, OSU is linked to Miami, FSU and USC. Everyone that I've talked to that is a college football or sports fan says OSU is a dirty program. It is not true, but perception often trumps reality. Face it, OSU's reputation took a huge hit. Granted it wasn't great to begin with, but it gives more ammo to the detractors. -

This is what grinds my gears, the continuing apologizing and rationalization that "oh this really wasn't that bad". It is horseshit. Does it really matter if they sold items for a few bucks or for a few million bucks? What these guys did was a clear violation - it was selfish and stuipd and shouldn't be tolerated. The rule exists for a purpose and the rule was broken. I don't know what Tressel was thinking so I'll hold off judgment, but his reputation has certainly taken a hit. -

Really? I think lots of NCAA rules exist for the purpose of nothing.Manhattan Buckeye;728484 wrote:The rule exists for a purpose and the rule was broken. -
OhioStatePride2003I'm sure I'll be blasted for this, but I honestly believe that Tress is the fall guy in this matter. There have been 12 coaches that have lied to the NCAA, 11 of those 12 have been fired with Tress bein' #12. Why he'd agree to be the fall guy, is beyond me. I know, it's a conspiracy - but really, none of this makes any sense to me. Tress, bein' the guy that he is with the reputation he has, I just can't see him doing something this big. So...maybe I'm wrong, as I hope I do because I think it would negatively affect the entire university, but it's just my thoughts. Regardless, Ohio State will play football this year, Ohio State will win this year, and eventually - this will all go away.

sherm03The reason why people are now associating Tressel and OSU with the likes of USC and Miami has nothing to do with the violation itself. The original violation is not that bad of a thing. People were able to forgive that. But the fact that JT covered it up IS a big deal. It brings up a lot of questions. This whole thing leads a lot of people to doubt Tressel's and OSU's credibility. If he is willing to lie and cover up a small thing like this...what else is he willing to lie about and cover up?
-
karen lotz
Exactly. You have to think back to all of the previous incidents and wonder if Tressel was able to hide those things because there weren't emails. The stuff dates back to Youngstown State and people are acting like this is just a small isolated incident. The initial violation was extremely small in the grand scheme of things, but Tressel's actions that have follwed the violation raise a lot of questions about his past.sherm03;728574 wrote:If he is willing to lie and cover up a small thing like this...what else is he willing to lie about and cover up? -

Also you can search for Ray Isaac and I'm sure you will be able to find other articles on it. -

It exists so that people can pretend that D1 athletes in the money sports are "regular" students. It's nothing but a trainload of bullshit and hypocrisy, I'm not sure why people seem to have a need for it. -
0311sdpThe whole thing was blown way out of proportion from the very beginning (witch hunt) The NCAA's job is to ensure that no one gains a competitive edge by cheating, What competitive edge did OSU gain from this? answer none. This is a trivial matter and could have easily been overlooked (small suspension to the players 2-3 games) until it was discovered that JT knew about it and said nothing. I still consider it a trivial matter but because it is OSU the media has given it equal or more coverage with the Reggie Bush incident and certainly more coverage than the Cam Newton pay to play deal with Auburn. I agree with those who think that this will eventually cost Tressel his job (I don't think it should but it will) Most people in other parts of the country who don't follow the story that closely assume that OSU was caught cheating, A. this has nothing to do with OSU and B. selling your own shit and getting free tattoos is hardly cheating to win football games. My hope is that this bullshit nothing story will go away but realistically I know it won't (the haters in the media, jealousy won't let it) and it will cost an honest man and good football coach his job.

LOL. Why do you think he's so honest? Just because he's never been caught before? How many times has something come up and JT was able to successfully cover it up and hide it to maintain his squeaky clean image?
Like has been said numerous times, you are correct...the initial violation from the players is not that big of a deal. But lying and covering up a violation that would cause your players to be suspended IS a big deal. His credibility is shot. Instead of thinking of him as an ethical guy who doesn't violate the rules, people are going to think of him as a hypocrite and always wonder what he's gotten away with in the past. -

The problem with that is there is no way to say how it gives OSU an advantage. If word gets out to recruits that there are people that will pay them for items like Big Ten championship rings without anyone finding out, that can definitely help bring kids in. Obviously this can go on anywhere and is not exclusive to OSU, but as Antonio Pittman said, "Cats be getting hookups on tatts since back in 01 and gettin homies who dont even play free tatts ahahahaa." Its also not possible to say it is trivial because of the money that changed hands was small because if its ok to sell stuff for $1,000, how do you stop boosters/other people from paying $50,000?? -

Based on the quote from Pittman, it comfirms my disgust for the hypocrisy of big-time college sports. That people are worried about free tattoos and selling trinkets, when people who are supposedly college educated write like that is sad and more than a little ridiculous. -
TiernanIf you believe these guys only traded memoribilia for "Tats" you are dumber than Gordon Gee. Cash changed hands too folks...probably lots of it, you can bank on that. What worries me is the Parlor owner is under Fed investigation for Drug traffiking too. Not a huge leap to think these dumb asses accepted a few bags of weed for a pair of gold pants or signed jersey. If that ever comes to light, the roof blows off. Yes OSU is definitely now linked with USC, Auburn, Miami, Tenn, FL St... ad nauseum. Buckeyes haven't had a clean reputation for quite sometime now, its now only been validated. Deal with it. The 2011 season will most likely be a complete bust. Next year The 5 idiots are gone and we get back to kicking ass.

Some of your assertions could be correct. You are taking quite a leap suggesting tatts and 50,000 booster payments in the same sentence though.
