Here is what I don't get....

I realize it's not the NCAA's or even the NIT, but WHY IN THE HELL WOULD ANY SCHOOL TURN DOWN A BID FOR MORE GAMES?!?!?
  • ts1227
Well, for the CBI, you have to pay them $60,000 to host. That is usually a sticking point for schools of this size/budget.

I'm not sure about the CIT. It's either less or there is no fee, considering the CIT has over 75% of the field set already. The CBI always takes forever to fill in because everyone wants to play an away game and avoid the fee.

many schools will lose money even if they host, definitely if they travel far. plus they have stopped practicing and may have spring break now or next week.

I agree with you, but some of the power conferences strongly discourage members from taking these bids. When Virginia accepted the CBI bid in '08 they got a lot of flak from the ACC.

Mississippi State's reasoning is that they don't want Renardo Sidney to punch anymore of his teammates.

    CIT is set, see above.

ESPN really went above and beyond with the formatting of that NIT 'bracket'. Wow.
  • wildcats20
    lol

I could see a Miami/Va Tech Final though.
  • CinciX12
It was impossible for UD to have a home game right because of the NCAA having the building?
  • ts1227
Added NIT matchups to the top.

CBI can't find teams as usual.
  • Azubuike24
Isn't it interesting that Chargers WR Vincent Jackson is on the CIT selection committee...
  • ts1227
CBI has still only had half the field confirmed because no one wants to pay their dumbass $60K ransom.

CIT fee appears to be much less (about 31K to host a game last year it looks like).

The Big Ten has 8 teams playing in the postseason, and the 3 teams that aren't beat teams like North Carolina, West Virginia, Akron, Purdue (twice), Michigan (twice), Alabama, Michigan State, Illinois.

Yea I don't like it either. So what if it's not the NCAA? Do what UNC did last year. Even though they lost they still played the NIT to win and it made the NIT exciting for many people.

How does Iona not get in the NIT?
  • Azubuike24
Fairfield won the MAAC by 3 games. Iona is good, but since they didn't win their conference or conference tournament...

I'd say they are one of the next best 32 after the field of 68...but it is what it is.

About a month ago Wright State said they wouldnt accept an ivite to play in those two lowest tournaments because of the cost and health of their team.

I can totally undestand it. In CFB if you get into a bowl you go for a few reasons......another few WEEKS of practice, plus in recruiting teams always boast how many bowl games they have gone to. Promoting to a recruit for CFB and say 'we have gone to a bowl game 5 of the last 7 years' is much different than a WSU boasting to a recruit they went to CBI and CIt or whatever those are called. Plus.......when those bowl games are on during December there is nothing else to watch and there is some focus and recognition for those teams.

I wouldn't want Duke playing in the NIT, and I hope we'd decline. Duke is not an NIT school. If it so happens that Duke doesn't have the kind of year that warrants an NCAA bid, then that particular team's season deserves to be over. I agree whole heartedly with Gary Williams of Maryland with regard to the CBI and ACT or whatever the hell. At a basketball power, you win or you go home. And you do NOT play in a third-party tournament. For goodness sake.

The NIT has become a complete joke for traditional basketball schools. This is 2011. Harry S. Truman isn't president anymore.

I wouldnt be opposed to playing in the NIT....but the other two.....no flippin way.
  • Azubuike24
The NIT has actually been decent, and looks prestigious compared to the other tournaments. The NIT has a national television audience, some quality venues for the Final Four and can generate some revenue. The other tournaments are pay to play, and many of the schools won't generate enough to cover the costs of paying for the game and servicing the fans in attendance.

As for the NIT, it all depends on the type of team you have. A team of seniors who had turmoil and underachieved, I decline. If I have a team like Rick Majerus had last year at St. Louis or like Darrin Horn has at South Carolina, I accept. The extra games can't hurt and for some schools, any additional exposure is good.

For a team like this year's Duke team, with veteran leaders and a brand name like Duke, I agree, the NIT would be a waste.
