NIT, CBI, and CIT - The Other Tournaments

If it so happens that Duke doesn't have the kind of year that warrants an NCAA bid, then that particular team's season deserves to be over. I agree whole heartedly with Gary Williams of Maryland with regard to the CBI and ACT or whatever the hell. At a basketball power, you win or you go home. And you do NOT play in a third-party tournament. For goodness sake.

The NIT -- and especially now the CBI -- has become a complete joke for traditional basketball schools. This is 2011. Harry S. Truman isn't president anymore.

    1980-1981 begs to differ.

And before you go an find the NIT dates for Carolina, I don't care.

In 1980-81, the Back to the Future franchise was still five years away from production. Lol. To entertain a reference that would resonate with the events of present day, Chernobyl wouldn't happen for another six years. Larry Bird had yet to win an NBA championship, the Southern Methodist Mustangs were college football's greatest power and Christa McAuliffe had yet to go to space. While that last point is beyond impolite, you get my drift.

Since that season, the Duke brand has grown into, arguably, the most powerful, successful and recognizable brand in the sport of college basketball. Since 1986, Duke and Coach K have run off 11 Final Fours, 4 national titles, 8 national championship game appearances, 13 ACC championships, more NCAA tournament wins -- and a higher NCAA winning percentage -- than any other school, more national players of the year (10), more national defensive players of the year, more All-Americans, more weeks spent at No. 1, et cetera. I was going to go get my Duke book and list more but I am now tired.

So, yeah, a big lol at 1980-81. Does that mean that K today wouldn't accept an NIT bid? No. But I sure hope he wouldn't. Because, right now, with how dominant Duke has been over the past two-plus decades, the Blue Devils are too good for it. (As Az said, though, it probably does, to some degree, depend on the specific year in question, the roster dynamic, and so forth.)

I can, however, see how that would be hard for a North Carolina fan to deal with. Especially being that each 2002-03 and 2009-10 beg to differ. Oh, and 8 and 20 :)

Good game between Kent St. and St. Mary's on ESPN2.
  • grodt
Kid from St. Mary's is a 91% FT shooter and has gone 1-4 from the line. Another is a 55% shooter and hit 2 big free throws. Go figure...St. Mary's up 3 with 24.9 left
  • grodt
Kent St. just got a bucket and then St. Mary's fumbled the inbound out of bounds back to Kent St. Kent down 1 with :10 left chance for the win.
  • Pick6
    good finish coming
  • Pick6
wow kent state got bailed out on the timeout call..i thought they were gonna call a foul
  • grodt
Kent St. scores a quick 2 (why not go for the last shot?) St. Mary's inbounds then calls timeout with 2.6 left. That last play by Kent was executed very well.
  • grodt
St. Mary's misses a layup as time expires. Kent wins.

Impressive win for the Flashes. They haven't had much rest time since losing the MAC final and then having to fly out to California. They were trailing almost the entire game but fought back and got a nice road win.
  • Pick6
damn! actually rooting for kent in the NIT though. Maybe we can get some MAC recognition.
  • grodt
I usually root for certain MAC schools in big tournaments. Also a kid from my high school plays for Kent so I tend to root for them.

I think he's referring to Dayton losing at the College of Charleston, but I could be wrong. The Xavier Minutemen lost to Dayton in their conference tournament.

Most people thought that college football had too many bowls games, but this many post season basketball tournaments? This is far more ridiculous.

A little less than 40% of D1 schools get into a postseason basketball tourney. 60% get into bowl games. Some teams even make money on the basketball games (everyone loses or breaks even at best on non-bcs bowls basically)

How is this more ridiculous? Sure, both are, but how is basketball worse?

    Correct.
  • Heretic
Well, THE Ohio U won their first game by one over Marshall in one of those "who gives a flying fuck" tournaments! YAY!
  • thavoice
As for what is worse.....welll...if you have a winning record in football.....you are pretty much guarenteed a bowl game. Any above 500 teams not get invited to play in those two joke tournaments? I dont know...hard to tell because some schools decline the invite.

many teams lose money going to bowl games.
