Conference Tournaments

Belmont is impressive. They have the one loss to Lipscomb, but their other losses were to Tennessee and Vanderbilt in close games. I'm with Azubuike24...wouldn't be surprised at all to see them make some noise.

I missed Coastal Carolina's situation. Did they have injuries?
  • ironman02
By the way, if Princeton beats Penn and finishes with a 12-2 mark in the Ivy League, is there some sort of tie-breaker or do they have a playoff game?
  • Azubuike24
Coastal Carolina lost Mike Holmes (14 PPG and 9 RPG), former big man at South Carolina who won SEC newcomer of the year. He was kicked off at South Carolina and kicked off at Coastal Carolina.

Coastal Carolina also lost Desmond Holloway (19 PPG and 7 RPG), their leading scorer and probable conference player of the year. He was suspended due to self-reported possible illegal benefits to him during recruitment.

They also lost starting PG Kierre Greenwood on February 15th to a torn ACL. He averaged 8 PPG and 4 APG. Junior guard Willie Kirkland (5 PPG) was ruled academically ineligible after 7 games and left the program.

When Greenwood went down in the 1st half on Feb. 15th, Coastal lost the game to Gardner-Webb. They entered the game 24-2, 14-0. They lost 2 of their final 4 games and lost in the finals of the tournament today. Since the Holloway suspension on Feb. 17th, they only had 8 players on the roster and only 6 guys on scholarship. Their only losses at full strength were to Charleston and Georgetown. Definitely a season that "could have been" for former Auburn coach Cliff Ellis.

    Wow. That's rough.

    Thanks for the information, Azubuike24.

Belmont looked really good today. They will win a game depending on the match-up.

Unfortunate that Butler and Cleveland State had to go at one another in a HL semi-final.

Gottlieb is trying to say that Butler will make the Sweet 16 and possibly farther right now. I don't understand how he is so out of reality. And then ESPN decides to show highlights against X. They lost. You are showing highlights of them losing. What about the highlights today, when they won? ESPN sucks at life.

Apparently (according to the BTN) if Penn State beats Minnesota tomorrow, they would be the 6 seed in the Big Ten tournament. If that is the case, and if Ohio State beats Wisconsin tomorrow (I think you switch Wisconsin and Purdue if Wisconsin beats Ohio State), you would have:

    8 Northwestern/9 Minnesota vs. 1 Ohio State
    4 Illinois vs. 5 Michigan

    6 Penn State/11 Indiana vs. 3 Wisconsin
    7 Michigan State/10 Iowa vs. 2 Purdue

If Penn State beats Minnesota and then beats Indiana, they would be at 17-13 with a strong SOS and a resume comparable or better than most of the bubble teams. They could be playing Wisconsin for a spot in the NCAA tournament (or they might even already have one).

If Michigan State beats Iowa they would be 18-13, and should be in good shape, although it wouldn't surprise me if they beat Purdue as well to lock themselves in.

If Michigan beats Illinois they are a lock. If Illinois wins Michigan should still be in good shape, but they would be around that bubble again.

Kenneth Faried is a beast. I don't think Morehead State is good enough offensively to be a real upset threat though, especially because they'll be a 15 seed at best.

Horizon League final is intriguing. I think Butler is definitely the more talented team, but the game is on Milwaukee's home court where Butler lost by 24 earlier in the season.

Stony Brook beat Vermont in the Semi-Finals of the America East conference Tournament. I know its not important but it does mean we wont get to see the 'stache during March Madness.

Looking forward to Wofford and the College of Charleston tonight for auto out of the Southern Conference. Andrew Goudelock is criminally underrated. Most remember him for the 24 points he dropped on North Carolina last year, scoring the game's last eight points in regulation including a rainbow triple from near half-court to send the contest into overtime -- Charleston, of course, finished things off in the extra period. Twenty-seven at Maryland. Twenty-eight at North Carolina. Thirty-one in the Southern Conference semi-finals. Twenty-three points per night. Those are the numbers Goudelock has put up this year. There might not be a more exciting player, excluding Jimmer Fredette, in college basketball this year. I love this kid's game.

And, of course, everyone could turn to ESPN right now to watch Old Dominion and West Virginia Commonworth, as Mike Patrick likes to call them. Is he calling games from Pluto? What is this guy's deal..
  • SportsAndLady
Mike Patrick is my least favorite commentator. He speaks like he's trying to shit a baby monkey out of his ass every time he says a sentence.

They are saying VCU needs to win this game to make the tournament, and they probably do, but I would have them in the tournament regardless. They have a better profile than teams like Boston College, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Missouri State, Clemson, St. Mary's, Richmond, and Virginia Tech.

They definitely do. George Mason exited the Colonial Tournament yesterday. The Patriots are in. If VCU were to lose tonight, then ODU gets the CAA automatic bid. The CAA is not getting three bids.

You're right. I was looking at the wrong line and didn't see their 3 awful losses. They should still get in over some of the teams I listed who have fewer good wins and just as many bad losses against similar or worse schedules, like Alabama, St. Mary's, Missouri State, etc, but they won't get in without a win tonight.

Forget cars. Andrew Goudelock hitting shots that should win him spaceships. He is in a zone from '40. Goudelock with 25 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting thus far. The commentators just mentioned that he is currently the nation's leading career scorer among active players. The kid can ball.

I hope C of C pulls it out, as I would love to see Bobby Cremins back in the Dance.

So when did the MAAC (aka Metro) begin to be pronounced "mack"? Seems retarded to me considering the other/real MAC had been around for 34 years before the Metro started.

What a great atmosphere that Virginia Commonwealth/Old Dominion game had!
  • SportsAndLady
ODU is gonna be a tough out in the tourney..they're a strong team.

I hope C of C can pull it out also...I love Goudelock
  • reclegend22
Well, Bobby Cremins better get his golfing clubs out because it is over.

Not sure if Charleston has a chance at the NIT or not, but, if not, Andrew "The Carolina Butcher" Goudelock will end his career with just under 2,500 career points and just four shy of 800 this season. A truly sensational career. One of my favorites.

Looks like Gonzaga will win the WCC. I don't see what makes St. Mary's a tournament team. To me if you only do something once it looks like a fluke, like a team with one bad loss. Well, St. Mary's has 1 top 50 win, against St. John's, the 2nd game of the season before they figured out how good they could be. Other than that, St. Mary's doesn't impress me. I'm sure they'll get in though because they went 20-2 against bad teams.
  • Mulva
    I don't see St. Mary's getting in.

There is still the CBI and CIT. Although hosting one of those games is hardly worth it, C of C could still end up there.

Well, if C of C should happen to play in either of those tournaments, no matter how truly stupid their existence, I will be watching. I remember following Rutgers through the NIT a few seasons ago (2004, I think) because of one man, Long Range Quincy Douby. That kid could stroke it effortlessly from a legitimate 35 feet with a man in his face. Douby is, without a doubt in my mind, the most unconscious shooter I have seen in the college game. He was Reggie Miller cool on the court. In fact, he was so hot that tournament I began taping Rutgers NIT games. Haha. I still have them.

Bill Raftery had a great call during the NIT semi-final game against Iowa State after Douby dropped back and put a hand-in-his-face rainbow straight through the rim, touching nothing: 22 feet, chuck and duck. Douby Douby Doo! He scored 35 that night in a Scarlet Knight victory. Along with Charlotte's Brendan Plavich, Butler's Darnell Archey and Charleston's Goudelock, Douby remains one of my all-time favorite non-Duke players. Those are, by far, my top three of the last decade.

Why do you like Plavich and Archey lol just curious..

Well, if I actually was making home videotapes of Scarlet Knight NIT games, and I was, then my liking Archey and Plavich should be the least of my atypical qualities haha.

I loved watching those two for the same reasons I loved watching Douby and Goudelock. Plavich had the deepest range that I have ever seen at the college level. Laley can attest to this one, but Plavich beat Indiana on a stand-still jump shot from half-court. That same year he scored 30 points on 10 threes at the Carrier Dome, hitting most of the shots from well beyond the high school volleyball line area. It probably sounds like vast hyperbole, but, when Plavich was in a rhythm, not even Redick could match the kid's shooting compass. I tried to make "shooting compass" cool right there but it did not work haha. (By shooting compass, I mean range.)

Archey put on a show inside Cameron his senior year, along with current Ohio State assistant Brandon Miller. They were both hitting shots from behind the Bulldogs' picket fence from 30'. I had followed Archey closely since he killed Rick Pitino and Louisville in the 2003 second round after hitting six threes in the second half to lead tiny Butler into the Sweet 16. That was when the Bulldogs officially arrived on the national scene.

I'm trying to find a video of the Austin Peay vs. Morehead State student section battle...one side was chanting "we want morehead" while the other was chanting "lets go peay" it was hilarious
