The Official Early Entry into the NFL Draft Thread

In order for Lewis to be eligible as a True Sophomore, he will have to either waited a year to join the football team, or attended a prep school. He attended Blair Academy I believe, before signing with Pitt. It does not matter if you were held back or not in high school. The reason for going to a prep school, and I COULD be wrong, would be because if he was held back in high school - you don't get five years of eligibility in high school, thus making him ineligible for his senior year. Look it up before you post your "facts" dipshit.

LMAO!! Hey dumbass the reason he is eligible for the NFL Draft is because he was held back a year in High School, and the class he has entered high school with has been removed for high school for 3 years.

You couldn't be more wrong you jackass. No where will you find that it says "If you were held back in high school...". You have to have been removed from high school for THREE years. LOOK it up!

The reason he is eligible as a True Sophomore for the draft is because he was held back. Yes he would be a true junior and wouldn't be having this conversation if he was never held back. He went to prep school his senior year of high school. “No player shall be permitted to apply for special eligibility for selection in the Draft, or otherwise be eligible for the Draft, until three NFL regular seasons have begun and ended following either his graduation from high school or graduation of the class with which he entered high school, whichever is earlier.”

His graduating class has been removed for 3 year Dion Lewis has not. Prep School is still considered high school.

    Dear God...http://connecticut.scout.com/2/1038567.html

"Lewis, on Saturday following Pitt’s 27-10 win over Kentucky, that he would talk with his family about his future. Apparently, he only needed a couple days, as he too decided on Monday. Lewis leaves for the NFL after just two years at Pitt, but is eligible to enter the Draft because of an extra year spent at Blair Academy.."

It doesn't say "is eligible because the people he WOULD HAVE graduated with have been out of high school for three years..."

The rule officially reads — “No player shall be permitted to apply for special eligibility for selection in the Draft, or otherwise be eligible for the Draft, until three NFL regular seasons have begun and ended following either his graduation from high school or graduation of the class with which he entered high school, whichever is earlier.”

Lewis was held back a year and thus was in high school for four years repeating his sophomore. He was out of eligibly for high school football so he attended a prep school his senior year to finish his high school degree.

Tiger, this seems to indicate that it has to be their graduation, not the class they entered high school with. This is the best explanation I've found thus far.

    SPECIAL
ELIGIBILITY. Such player has been granted eligibility through special permission of the Commissioner. Any applications for special eligibility must be in the Commissioner's office no later than Thursday, January 15, 2004, if the player is to be considered for inclusion in the League's principal draft scheduled for April 24-25, 2004. Applications will be accepted only for college players for whom at least three full college seasons have elapsed since their high school graduation. Players will not be permitted to elect to bypass the January 15 deadline in order to seek eligibility for a later supplemental draft, and no supplemental draft will be held to accommodate such an election. n38

It's at their projected graduation, which is determined in 9th grade.

So if a kid enters 9th grade in the fall of 2011, his expected graduation is in the summer of 2016.

Therefore, 3 years removed from that 2016 graduating class, that player can go to the NFL.

So in theory, if a kid was held back in 10th grade, spent 5 years in high school and one year at prep school, he could play one year of college (7 years, from fall of 2011 to summer of 2019) and be eligible for the NFL.

Think of it this way. Year 1 of football starts in 9th grade. He can't play in the NFL for 7 football seasons. Where he spends those seasons is irrelevant as long as 7 go by. At that point, he is eligible for the NFL draft.

Not saying you're incorrect, but I've been unable to find anything that mentions a "projected" graduation date.

you guys are still arguing about how Dion Lewis is eligible for the draft? :)

I don't think "projected graduation date" is the right term because the "projection" can always be changed.

The better term is the way Tiger2003 said it.

“No player shall be permitted to apply for special eligibility for selection in the Draft, or otherwise be eligible for the Draft, until three NFL regular seasons have begun and ended following either his graduation from high school or graduation of the class with which he entered high school, whichever is earlier.”

In most cases, guys get held back for athletics and you see a kid who is 19 or 20 as a Freshman. If that "hold back" includes an extra year of normal high school (i.e. repeating 10th grade) or a prep school (i.e. a 5th year of high school AFTER your senior year) or both, it would mean this kid could be required to attend college for less time.

That's the way it was explained to me before and that has been my impression for a few years. I'd love to see proof one way or another though, regardless of Dion Lewis' involvement. This isn't just relating to him.

I would like to see some proof as well. I searched for about an hour last night, and the best I could find was what I posted above. I know they did change it from 3 NFL seasons to 3 college seasons, not that it makes a big difference.

How many Ohio Chatter guys does it take to figure out a rule? Take a step back, look at the thread, and realize how long you've been going back and forth on a RULE. Obviously you guys care, but I don't-- he's gone, that's all I need to know. You guys must have a lot of open time in the day/night. I bet it's nice.

There are also reports coming out that Michael Floyd will announce he is entering the draft tomorrow.
Floyd has announced he will return to Notre Dame for his senior season. :D

Okay Tiger - I stand corrected. I think we were saying the same thing just in different ways. I finally called up a buddy to ask him, and he said the same thing you did. I just didn't understand the way it was worded in everything I looked at. Not a troll, so - I stand corrected. It is three years from your projected - starting freshman year - graduation date.

Dion Lewis is eligible for the draft. Does it really matter how or why? Christ.
  • OhioStatePride2003
Blackmon is also returning for his senior season, just read it on ESPN. Dunno if it's been stated on here or not, but just read it. I really wonder if the potential lockout has anything to do with some of these guys coming back.

Damn...that will take away some of the Browns maneuverability in the draft if they want a receiver.

Are the Browns not high on AJ Green?

I would say they are, but I'm talking in terms of trading down and still getting a top flight WR.

Wrong. If a kid enters high school fall of 2011, his expected graduation is 2015. I know it's semantics but I'm just saying.

I started high school fall of '03 and graduated summer of '07.

Ah got ya. Browns have the 5th pick right? I'd think they would take Green at 5 if he is still on the board.

Math mistake. Either way, it's 4 years.

If you start HS in the Fall of '11:

    Frosh year is 11-12(fall-spring/summer).
    Soph year is 12-13.
    Junior year is 13-14.
    Senior year is 14-15.

And of course you edited your post as I was typing lol
