Kelly latest to brush off Irish rumors
-
TiernanAnother ungrateful UC poster...Dantonio set the tone for Kelly to come in and be a hero. Can't wait for ND to announce BK as their 7th coach in 28 years. BTW...OSU had 1 coach last that long, even the great Rockne didn't last that long.

Little DannyTiernan,
I think I have a bit more knowledge of the situation than you do. I have been going to UC games every year since I was a student there in the early 1990's. How many games have you been to?
As I said, Dantonio did bring in some quality depth of talent, but other than that he did nothing further to advance the program any further than it had been during the Rick Minter regime (I'm sure you have no clue who Rick Minter even is or what his record was). The talent under Dantonio underachieved and there was no fan interest. When Kelly came to UC he reached out to the student body and the community to sell the program. As a result, UC's attendance and funding for the athletic program is at all-time highs.
BTW, How is the great Dantonio doing up in Michigan state? Didn't they lose to Brian Kelly's old MAC school this year and finish .500. If I recall, I don't think his winning percentage there is any better than his predecessor's.... and that is not good. Didn't he just have to kick off like 15 players for jumping some poor schlep and beating the crap out of them? Nice! -

Nice spin. Rockne died in a plane crash. Obviously and tragically, he didn't live long enough to be at ND for 28+ years.Tiernan wrote:BTW...OSU had 1 coach last that long, even the great Rockne didn't last that long. -
wc expertWhy ND would take Stoops over Kelly is beyond me - imo, Stoops is overrated.
Kelly is the guy for the job, and after the Pitt game Swarbrick will put the full-court press on to sign him. -
ytownfootballDanny, you seem very hell bent on giving Dantonio very little credit, yet he was there only three seasons. He got the ball rolling. End of story.
I'm confused how there was no change in interest? Certainly you're not gauging interest in attendance as Nippert only holds 35K.
I just don't see how you can make such assertions based on a three year tenure, gobucks said he got the ball rolling, and I agree with that. -
rocket31fwiw, according to sean o'shea kelly will sign with the irish after the cincy game...
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/301379-at-notre-dame-its-cincinnatis-brian-kelly-who-got-the-job
i dont know who will be the next ndcoach, but how two guys (kelly and stoops) can have this many rumors surrounding them for one job, is mildly amusing... -
3reppomUC fans know full well the impact that Dantonio had on the program. Dantonio had a tremendous positive impact on the program in his time here. That being said he is not popular at all in most UC circles, and that was well earned. To say that Kelly is doing what he has with Dantonio's players is also wrong. Last years team was full of Dantonio's guys. Mickens, Byrd, Barwin, Goodie, Corey Smith, Deangelo Smith, Hopple, Canfield, El-Amin and Grutza were the core of that team, and they were all Dantonio's guys. This year there are a few but Link, Revels, Webster and Ramsey are all that are left of Dantonio's people. Also to say that Dantonio got the ball rolling is wrong again. This current run started with Minter and the 1997 team going to the Humanitarian Bowl.

If you look at my posts, I never said he deserves no credit. I twice indicated he brought in quality depth of talent. My point is that everytime Kelly gets discussed some OSU poster comes around and wants to give most of the credit to Dantonio. That is absoloutely insane.ytownfootball wrote: Danny, you seem very hell bent on giving Dantonio very little credit, yet he was there only three seasons. He got the ball rolling. End of story.

So as it stands, I give credit as such:
50% Kelly
25% Mike Thomas (The AD who hired Kelly)
10% Bob Goin (former AD who got UC in the BE)
7.5% Dantonio
7.5% Rick Minter
As far as change of interest, Dantonio brought no change of interest from the Minter regime. UC consistly sold arond 20,000 during the Minter years as they did during the Dantonio years. UC did not crack the 30,000 mark until Kelly came along. -
cbus4lifeI think Kelly would be a great fit for ND.
-
ytownfootballI never said you didn't give him ANY credit, just very little, and that's fine. I think 3reppom has his finger on the pulse when he says "That being said he is not popular at all in most UC circles, and that was well earned." I get that, and most would understand that.
I disagree with reppom on the Minter being resposible for the surge in the program, the initial Humanitarian Bowl would be great if the subsequent seasons were also ended with bowl appearances but they were not. -
3reppomI don't think he is responsible for the current state of the program at all. But Minter clearly saw what was possible at UC, even if he never communicated his vision very well at all to the players, fans or the community at large. What Minter gets credit for is leaving the program in better shape than when he found it, and the same thing goes for Dantonio and ultimately Kelly himself.

TiernanDanny Boy...you asked how many UC games I've been to? I'm proud to say only 1... the one where OSU beat them in Cincy. (I know, I know...your guy dropped 2 passes in the end zone, cry me a river.) And that was before Dantanio even got there and turned things around. If BK gets the call from ND don't be standing in his way when he bolts town or you'll get trampled.

What a dick! People like you are pathetic by making fun of a tragedy, although by reading your posts, I'm not at all surprised.Tiernan wrote: "Dropped like a...(wait for it).. Rock" according to eye witnesses. -

Hey if Kelly goes he goes. Nothing I can do about. I will be disappointed but life moves on. More coaches in the sea and UC will live to fight another day. However, something tells me you are more invested in him leaving and UC's misery than I am in him staying. How pathetic!Tiernan wrote: Danny Boy...you asked how many UC games I've been to? Unfortunate? no doubt. Regrettable? probably. Heart Breaking? certainly to some. Tragedy? bit of a stretch, rock.rock_knutne wrote:

That's what I was thinking. Kelly has a relatively easy path to the BCS game, great recruiting center in Cincinnati, will usually challenge for the BE title, and a chance to leave his name on a program. Why would he want to leave that for a school where the lifespan isn't going to be that long?
I'd say it is all on UC's shoulders at this point. They need to make promises and show good faith by giving him more money. -
3reppom
If Kelly stays it will be with another 5 year contract paying him about 2 million a year at minimum. The UC athletic department is working on putting together the package quickly, it will still be up to Kelly sign it or not. I would say it's 50/50 on him staying or going if Notre Dame offers him the job.eersandbeers wrote:Pescara71 wrote: Seriously, would you rather take a chance and be the Joe Paterno of Cinncy? I've heard it all now. You're saying a plane crash, which takes the life of a human being, isn't tragic? WOW, you're sicker than I thought. -
goosebumpsFootballCoachscoop.com says they're talking to Edsall, SKip Holtz and Harbaugh
I think that Skip Holtz would definitely be an interesting choice. Would Lou be an assistant? would he be an advisor? Edsall is a good coach and a better man, I wouldnt mind seeing him coach at ND. -
Hamp89Skip was a hot choice a few years ago when East Carolina had a good season. He's kind of fallen off the radar the past couple of years, but I don't know that I would necessarily hate that choice.
-
sjmvsfscs08Skip Holtz is currently 37-26 at East Carolina, he was 38-23 at Connecticut before that. At both schools their record improved exponentially during his tenure.
2005: 5-7
2006: 7-6
2007: 8-5
2008: 9-5 (C-USA Champions)
2009: 8-4 (could finish at 10-4)
Not too shabby, considering the teams he is losing to have a tremendous advantage in terms of program strength. -
bcubed
Especially since he has said repeatedly the past couple of years that he and his family are very happy here, and that if the college steps up and does the things he needs it to to improve, he would gladly stay long term. Well they have re-worked his contract every year, are building the practice facility he wants and are soliciting funds to increase the size of the stadium and such. How now could you go and look like an idiot and take another job. The Irish job is not a good situation at all.eersandbeers wrote:Pescara71 wrote: Seriously, would you rather take a chance and be the Joe Paterno of Cinncy? Ok...sure...bcubed wrote: The Irish job is not a good situation at all.
I don't know who said it, but a writer that was on Jim Rome's show this week put it best.
"If you win at Oklahoma, you are the king of Oklahoma. If you win at Florida, you are the king of Florida. If you win at Notre Dame, you are the king of the world!"
The situation is good. Good recruits are choosing ND, the administration is committed to a winning football team, and the facilities are second to none. The next coach has the opportunity to bring Notre Dame back to being a contender, and trust me, the coach that turns ND around and brings the program back to being competitive will go down in college football lure as being a legend. Period. -
TiernanBcubed - as much as I like kicking the Irish when they are down, even I have to agree with Sherm...the ND job is light years ahead of Cinci and all coaches have a self - inflated ego gene (they have to, to even be semi successful ) and they all think they can win anywhere given the opportunity. BK is no different and growing up a good little Catholic alter boy it was beaten into him daily to believe the football coach at ND only answers to the Pope. If the invite comes (which I believe already has happened and they are waiting until after the Pitt game to announce ) Kelly will blow out of the Queen City faster than Clausen at a fair fight.
