  Since he disengaged after being driven back, forward progress started again and it should have been a safety. However, I've never seen someone get stuffed and driven back like that (he was driven back 5 yeards) and not be be whistled dead and granted forward progress, so ultimately it shouldn't have been a safety.

  If the WR coming off the route is hit and grabbed by the LB, and pushed back, YES forward progress is stopped. You see it ALL the time when an offensive player is pushed back. The refs bow the whistle.
  
  If the WR coming off a slant or whatever is just blasted, but the LB or whomever doesn't actually grab the offensive player and drive them back, then no, forward progress is not stopped as the offensive player is still able to move forward after initial contact.
  
  It's really not that hard to grasp.

  Wrong. This happens a lot. A pass is caught right at the first down line, player is pushed back but not wrapped up. Ball carrier then gives up a little ground in order to get around the corner and then he is tackled a couple yards behind the initial point of catch. He doesn't get forward progress. The only thing you can argue is the whistle wasn't blown at the right time.

  His forward progress was STOPPED. He was being PUSHED BACKWARDS for SEVERAL YARDS.

  You should have stopped there. Because Boom was wrapped up, and pushed back for 5 yards. Forward progress ='s stopped.
  
  Just because the defender FINALLY fell off, shouldn't mean Arkansas gets the benefit of the doubt.
  
  Again, if I'm a coach now, I'm telling my defenders to push the offensive player in the endzone and to just fall off and allow the rest of the team to finish it off for a safety now.

  If the guy moves forward at any point, even if he doesn't gain back the yardage he lost, he was still progressing forward again. When guys are wrapped up and driven back by multiple guys and never start moving forward again, they mark the ball where forward progress stopped.

  Hasn't been difficult to watch at all. The rule is if forward progress is granted, the official blows the play dead. He didn't. Herron kept playing as if he wasn't stopped. Arkansas kept playing as if the play wasn't over. Rules are rules.

  We've all seen 100's of plays were the running back was stuffed and pushed back and the whistle was blown as soon as the pile moved backwards.

  And most of us have seen plays where people are initially stuffed and pushed back and then the ball carrier breaks free, gives a little ground and then is completely wrapped up and tackled, at which point he is ruled down. Can't help it that you and Cleveland Buck are the only two people on this site that have never seen that in a tackle football game.

  This was a crappy call, and just because he "got away" from the initial defender (although it was the defender who fell down) this still should of been a loss of 1 and 2&11 at the 1 yard line......no way this is a safety.
  
  The refs were pretty bad all night...even though the Bucks didn't have many penalties. Too many players taunting the buckeyes and never called, The entire D-line was held the entire night and barely called....and then of course the safety call.
  
  You could tell the refs were from the south (ACC) and trying to help out their SEC buddies. Luckily we came out with the win.

  SO, according to the official making this call. If a tackler stops a running back at the 2 yardline, then pushes the back into the endzone, he should release that back for an instant and then retackle him and it will always be a safety? The dumbest call I have seen in my life.

  I"ll slow it down: The whistle should have been blown prior to him breaking the tackle. Hence, "after he was driven back 5 yards."

  GTFO. Too many players taunting the buckeyes? I'm guessing your blinders prevented you from seeing the Buckeyes taunting Arkansas players. The safety call was correct. There was holding being down on both lines.

  I had no problem with the officiating because I thought it was pretty good overall. There were a few missed calls both ways and 1 botched call, but that happens in every game.

  But that isn't what happened! Boom threw that guy off of him. The Arkansas defender didn't just fall off of him. Boom, who is an incredibly strong guy evidenced by his stiff arms, threw the guy's ass off of him (breaking a tackle).
