Is Sullinger the #1 Pick Right Now?

    If the draft were tomorrow, would Jared Sullinger be the #1 pick? I haven't watched a ton of college basketball yet this year, but I have a hard time seeing who would get picked ahead of him right now.

    Tough to say.

    Probably have to consider Irving and Jones right with him at this point. Other guys like Kanter, Perry Jones and Kemba Walker in the mix.

    Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Jared is leaving after this year. I think he will stick around for 2 years and then make the jump.

    Also, given his size and translation to the NBA, and even if he won NPOY, would he project to be the #1 pick?

    It's pretty clear he's going to be one of the best performers, but that doesn't always translate.

    Id go with Irving still. But this injury is gonna kill him if he doesnt impress at workouts

    No chance. He's not athletic enough to be the #1 pick, although I do think he can be a good player in the NBA. He doesn't have the ceiling someone like Irving has.

    If I'm an NBA GM I would stay away from Sullinger. He can and will be a very productive college player, but he has some serious flaws that will limit his production at the next level. He is not an explosive jumper nor he a great athlete by NBA standards.He has great hands and a fell for the game, but if he is getting his shot blocked in college and he is , will he be able to create offense in the NBA.

    If he has or develops a face up game he could become a Kevin Love type player. Right now, I don't see his post game succeeding at the NBA level.

    It'll be interesting to see what happens regarding the Lockout, and if the players are conscious of it when declaring the draft.

    I agree with this. He's getting way too many of his shots blocked against some much weaker competition. He has yet to learn to give a fake and get defenders air born (I know he draws fouls but they're due to size). The NBA puts a premium on big men but his offensive production needs to be better in order to go #1.

    I also think he'll be sticking around a couple more seasons

    Not if his dad has anything to say about it. Sullinger needs to lose another 25 pounds and learn to play facing the basket and develope some serious ball handling skills. He COULD NOT play in the post at 6-8 in the NBA.

    No, he wouldn't be. Irving and Perry Jones would (and almost definitely will) be the top 2 picks in my opinion. They have the most upside.

    The thing with bigs at the college level, is that they take longer to develop and once they show a little bit of potential, they go pro. Guards are usually more seasoned.

    With that said, Sullinger just isn't going to face anyone this year that will give him the looks that he will get in the NBA. He's still undersized and not overly athletic. I think with his hands, good feet and basketball IQ he can make up for his athletic deficiencies. I always think he's a very good passer that hasn't had to show it yet.

    So, no I don't think he's a #1 pick, but he's certainly a top 5 pick. Look at the guys from last year, Favors and Cousins. I think Sullinger stacks up very well with each of those guys, but I don't know if he has the potential to dominate in the NBA. I think he will get to the NBA and end up putting on about 25 lbs of muscle and will become a true power player.

    He certainly doesn't need to lose more weight, and Elton Brand would disagree that you can't play the post at 6-8 in the NBA.

    I haven't seen Kanter, but from what I've heard, he has tremendous upside, so he may be in the discussion.

    As for Kemba Walker, he has no chance of being the #1 pick.

    He has long arms and plays bigger than 6'8". Also, he will want to gain weight eventually. He's very "soft" looking in the chest area and needs to bulk up his chest and shoulders.

    Plenty of guys have been highly successful being smaller than Sullinger (Milsap, Boozer and Brand). A guy that Sullinger should study is Kevin Love. Love uses his body better than anyone in the NBA and has great hands, similar to Sullinger.

    Somebody needs to teach him to keep the ball above his waist when down low as well. I don't know how many times I saw him drop it down where everyone on IUPUI could get their hands on it, and end up getting fouled. It's not that bad if you can hit your foul shots, but it gives the opponent the chance to strip it, and the defenders are going to be much better come Big Ten time than IUPUI was.

    By all accounts, the lockout is a lock. It will have a HUGE affect on who and if players come out.
    NO, I don't think Sullinger is the #1 pick. Top 10 based on potential. But he is an undersized post player right now in the NBA. He needs to learn to step out a bit from the basket and show some more, which I believe he has. The big concern his him having to defend much quicker players in the NBA. Sully is a stud, a beast..no question. But he still has some development before I think he can be a success at the NBA. But, when your a top 10 pick..tough to pass up that gauranteed $$.

    No offense, but we all realize he can shoot, dribble, etc, etc. He is a talented player, no question about it. But comparing what he is doing above in a NO defense AAU game to what he is capable of doing against the likes of MSU, let alone vs NBA players is awful comparison. He has nice form with this shot. But he currently lacks quickness to get around someone from 15ft and out. Lets be honest, he is a big lumbersome young man with very avg. quickness. Right now, his strength, along with his bball IQ is his biggest asset.
