se-alumFWIW, Sully missed shoot around to attend his Uncle's funeral. Nice way to honor his uncle, dropping 40.

Yep, he dedicated the game to his Uncle after the game in a tweet.
OSU looked rusty as hell for the first 30 minutes of the game. They finally knocked the rust off and took control of the game. IUPUI was tough tonight though and hit some unbelievable shots.
And yes, I agree that Thad Matta was sending a message to his team by not subbing. -

Well, to be fair, it was Thursday on finals week...and it was against IUPI, lotta folks headed home.
Sure as hell were rusty, suppose you can blame that on 9 days off, glad to pull out the W. IUPI shot lights out in the first half but that happens. -
centralbucksfanBeing at the game, it was a bit scarey to be honest. Give IUPUI some credit...very well coached team, very deliberate and shot lights out for most of the game. OSU didn't have much energy on the defensive end of the court until the final 10 min. Of course, thats when they made their run...and it was all about defense. Lighty played one of his worst games I have ever seen on both ends of the court.
Craft is unreal on defense. He rarely gets beat and completely hounds the other teams PG.
Obviously, IUPUI didn't have anyone who could matchup with Sullinger. He was a man amongst boys and the other OSU players did a nice of looking for him in the post.
JohnGrizzly...to be honest, there was probably close to 10K at the game. -

What message was he sending? I don't understand this comment. That he's going to only play 5 guys this year, once again?

IUPUI deserves some credit, but not too much. Yes, they were well coached, but OSU just didn't play with any urgency until late in the game. Plus IUPUI played without their only big half of the game, and OSU still struggled. Really no excuse for OSU's play, but a win is a win.
And yes, Lighty was bad. Thank goodness Sullinger decided to show up. -

I'm not saying his stats will be better in Big 10 play, but I think he becomes much more important due to the grind it out style of play and much more of an emphasis on each individual possession. Sullinger will be the best player on the court in each game OSU plays this year and he will create so much offense by his presence alone. -
johngrizzlyThe amazing thing about this OSU team is this, when they flipped the switch, it was over. IUPUIAEIOU had no shot once OSU woke up.

Credit goes to IUPUI who shot lights out, even with hands in their faces. -

Both teams shot the same percentage, so that's not really fair. -

Sure it is, they hit alot of tough shots with hands in their faces, hit 3 pointer from 4 feet behind the 3pt line. Just because they shot the same percentage, doesn't mean they were hitting the same type of shots as OSU. -

Exactly. Believe me, I was at the game. OSU defense wasn't great...but IUPUI was hitting all kinds of shots from fade aways, deep 3's, and shots with hands in face. I was there up close to witness it and they deserve credit. OSU did crank it up along with IUPUI running out of gas late in the game. But they played as well as they could have wished for. -

Do you want a cookie for attending the game? You've mentioned it twice, good for you. I watched it on TV, I think we saw the same game.
IUPUI might have hit some difficult shots, but they had plenty of open looks. Just as OSU did. And OSU benefited from shooting 21 more free throws. I just don't think it's fair to take anything away from IUPUI because they went into the Schott and played well. -

Ya, so I can shove the cookie up your ass. Being at game, is different then watching on TV pal. And hitting open looks at the clip they were hitting, playing on the road against a top 5 team is still impressive. Give credit where credit is due. -

I am giving them credit. Are you implying that I didn't? I'm the one that said you can't discredit them for making lucky shots, when they shot the same percentage of shots at OSU and made plays offensively. -

Misunderstood. My bad. -

No, I think the message was pretty clear.
He sent a message to the bench by not playing them. If you're not going to perform, I'm not going to play you.
Didn't you say you played basketball? You've NEVER had a coach punish you or the team in that kind of way?
On the flip side, Matta could have been punishing his starters by playing the hell out of them.... Kind of like constant running in practice. That message could have been "We'll keep at it until you guys get it right"...
Either way, there was a message sent. You just don't go without subbing against IUPUI for no reason, sorry. -
lhslep134thedynasty1998;595268 wrote:Both teams shot the same percentage, so that's not really fair.
Right, and OSU is much more talented, so kudos for IUPUI.
Anytime you shoot the same percentage as the #2 team in the country you're going to make it a close game. -

I know coaches punish players all the time, but it's usually not, "You are playing like shit and not playing with intensity, so I'm going to stick with you." I don't think it was a message being sent at all, I just think Matta has made it his coaching philosophy that the best 5 play and play a lot. -

I'd agree with this as well. Look back to the Oden years. We all know how talented Cook was. But because he didn't buy into what Matta wanted, he didn't see the floor nearly as much as he could have. Of course he hasn't change much even in the NBA unfortunately. Thomas is a talented offensive player...but defensively, he is just poor right now. Thus the reason he isn't getting as many minutes as he could. A bit disappointing. But again, some of these guys are frosh and just need to learn into buy into what Matta wants. Once they do, if they do...they will take off.
