  Anytime a player might have broken rules the school immediately makes them ineligible.
  
  I'm really really shocked he's eligible. Their reasoning is because he "didn't know" about his dad's escapades, which is complete bullshit in my mind, not that he didn't know, but that it doesn't affect his eligibility.

  So, a violation of his amateur status occured, but he is still eligible?? Floodgates, opened. Shop your son, claim he knows nothing about it, and if you don't get the money, hey, at least you tried.

  That's the thing, he wasn't immediately ineligible. He has played 3 games since everything came out?

  This is really odd to me. They say rules were broken, but play on. And you guys are right, this will open the floodgates. We will see much more of this, if this is how it's going to be dealt with.

  The thing that will protect the NCAA is that every situation is interpreted differently. So, just because the Heisman front runner apparently got away with something doesn't mean others to follow him will.

  I don't think there will be outcry. Espn has been on his side since the beginning. They've been praising him through the whole ordeal.

  This marks the day that the programs stop recruiting players and start buying parents.
  
  This just shows the vast ineffectiveness of the NCAA as a governing body. I guarantee that the NCAA will cease to exist (or at least cease to govern D-1 football) in 10 years. As soon as the super conferences are formed they will govern themselves and begin paying players and the NCAA will be powerless to stop them.
  
  I wonder if the ruling would have been any different had they been able to prove that Cecil Newton had actually gotten money.

  they'll be some, but not a lot...if this had been the first we heard about it, then yes--but this thing has taken on a life of it's own, and it's had enough time to be discussed, processed, and rehashed enough that apathy has already set in.

  There won't be a lot by ESPN or their employees for obvious reasons which will be misleading because they are the self proclaimed "World Wide Leader" and the most visible. Media members not associated with ESPN won't have an issue questioning the ruling.

  Travesty. This non-student should not be eligible to receive any post season awards and Auburn should be facing the death-penalty. Another example of the SEC receiving preferential treatment from the NCAA.

  To say Cam didn't know is ridiculous. He called Mississippi State and told them he was going to Auburn because the money was just too good.
  
  Or, is the NCAA saying that call didn't happen while the other discussions in the hotel room did?
  
  This sets a horrible precedent from here on out. Bargain with the parents and keep the student oblivious. Get away with it, great. If you're caught, junior still gets his scholarship and ability to keep playing. Now, those $100 handshakes will be with the parents.

  And BTW, it was Mississippi that said they basically had an agreement to pay Newton, so if anyone should be punished it should be them.

  They are the "World Wide Leader in Sports," not sports reporting or sports investigative journalism. They are the Entertainment Sports Programming Network. SportCenter is an entertainment clips show. Should they report on it and raise some questions? Yes, and I'm sure they will. Would it be as much as if this dealt with a conference that they don't have a huge contract with? Probably not. But dealing with issue like this isn't their goal. Providing sports entertainment is their goal. Besides, look at all of the "liberal" news networks out there. None of them are really that liberal because they are all owned by major corporations that benefit from Republican policies, but no one seems to complain about that. The only news network that can be truly liberal is PBS because it's publicly funded. You just don't bite the hand that feeds you. Same concept.

  How do you know that's what was said? Let me say I absolutely think Newton was paid. But Miss. State is the one at fault here, because he was obviously going there with a financial agreement, but once he decided to go elsewhere, it seems like they just started making assumptions and didn't know how to go forward with what their discussions were with Newton.

  Yeah I get that, but this is THE story of the college football season and its very controversial, to say the least. Same thing happened with the USC stuff, they report when stuff comes out and if it doesn't look good, they put it to the back burner.

  ESPN also got burned several times by reporting stuff too early only for it to end up being false (like the Maurice Claret story where they ran a six page article in their magazine that ended up not being true). Stuff like that should be left up to Twitter and the bloggers to report and pontificate on. ESPN should do exactly what they have done and report on what is happening but not speculate. Shows like PTI and Sports Nation will discuss it, and I'm sure we'll see plenty of opinion articles on it. I'm not sure what else you'd like to see ESPN do.

  Is it possible that TCU sitting at number 3 has anything to do with this decision? I used to joke about the BCS/NCAA participating in some collusion/conspiracy to keep non-AQ teams from participating in the NC game but this seems like it might actually be happening now.
