Is Notre Dame being serious?
-
OldDanTuckerI know its another ND thread but I just saw this on ESPN. The ND players are seriously voting on wether or not they will accept a bowl bid. I know most people are happy fat boy's arrogant ass is getting the boot, but come on at least give the guy a shot at winning his last game. Wouldn't the players want to send the seniors off with a win? Not to mention the $$$$$$$$. Just for even considering not accepting a bowl bid no1 should offer them.
-
Trueblue23I thought that was odd too.
-
jordo212000Wow. Although with their record where it currently is, they could find themselves back in Hawaii or somewhere where nobody wants to be (Boise, Ft Worth, etc)
-
Mr PatWeis (if fired) won't be coaching the bowl game. They turned down a bowl bid when Holtz stepped down (or forced out). Floyd said he wants to play one last game with the seniors, Clausen seems to be for it, but Tate wants to see what game it is. After the season they had I can understand not wanting to go to Boise Idaho for their bowl.
-
jordo212000If Weis is fired, and a replacement isn't hired soon, I think you see Notre Dame reject the bid

sending the seniors off with a win is something to consider, however, the money they get from a lower-tier bowl might not even cover the cost of the trip.OldDanTucker wrote: I know its another ND thread but I just saw this on ESPN. notre dame might actually come out with negative $$$, as do most teams who attend lower tier bowl games.
remember, notre dame gets money from the bcs whether they make it there or not, so from a financial standpoint it might make more sense to stay at home and just collect the bcs check. -
newarkcatholicfanDidn't they turn down a bowl game a few years back?
Like they were too good to play at the tiny one they would have been invited to. -

I think this is ridiculous. I need to get whoever negotiated that deal for Notre Dame to be my lawyer/agent.rocket31 wrote:

sherm03First off, Weis won't be coaching in the bowl game. He lost his last 4 games at ND. Can't send him off with a win.
Second of all, the bowls that are considering Notre Dame aren't the greatest bowls. ND would end up playing in Boise, Detroit, or Washington D.C.
The team is discussing whether they would want to play in a shitty bowl with an interim head coach, or sit it out. I think that's a reasonable discussion to have. But the bottom line is, it's up to Swarbrick. He's the one that accepts the bid, and he has already said that he'll take what the team has to say into consideration...but he'll ultimately do what is best for the university and program. -
ytownfootballWhatever the Bowl would be wouldn't be a head turner for recruiting so from that standpoint I'd be thinking of turning it down, Turn the page and move on.
-
pooterI don't think the team will want to play without Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.... Even if it's the Rodney Dangerfield Bowl.

I want to say it was Lou Holtz's last season (96?). Seem to remember they lost to USC to finish 8-3, which wouldn't have gotten them into one of the top bowls. If I remember correctly, their only option was the Independence Bowl, who ended up getting Army.newarkcatholicfan wrote: Didn't they turn down a bowl game a few years back?

That was when the whole alliance thing was kicking into gear and conference affiliations really dictated the bowl schedule. The difference between 9-2 and 8-3 for them was huge when it came to their stock. I can't remember if they had already established their tie-in with the Big East or if this may have prompted them to broker that deal, but I do remember it as a transitional time with the Big XII being formed and the days of the independents pretty well diminished (really started in 93/94 with the Big East being formed). -
WriterbuckeyeCoach or not, I think it's foolish for programs to turn down bowl games if they want to see their players continue to grow and develop.
You get something like an extra three weeks of practice time with a bowl game (or close) which can help in the development of younger players.
Not having a coach throws a monkey wrench into all this, I know, but if you've got a coach on-board, I'd bet he would want to play in the bowl game to give him that extra time to evaluate the players on the team. -
CinciX12Notre Lame?
Its fitting someone with Old in their username would say that. WW2 is over grandpa, come up with new jokes. -

Yeah, and if they can get Brian Kelly, he could become the first coach to win a conference title at two different schools then bail on that team to coach someone else in a bowl game.Writerbuckeye wrote: Coach or not, I think it's foolish for programs to turn down bowl games if they want to see their players continue to grow and develop.

TiernanCinci...Old Dan is really Lorain Steelman from his former JJ Huddle days. He's a die hard scUM fan and is feeling his oats a little because ND is the ONLY quality win the "yellow & blue" managed somehow to pull out this year. They are 5 - 7 and won't have the opportunity to vote on going anywhere this bowl season.

Kelly won't be the new coach...but it doesn't matter. Whoever the new coach is would not be the one to coach ND in a bowl game. ND would name an interim head coach and you'd see Tenuta or even Ron Powlus coaching ND for the bowl game...not the new coach.enigmaax wrote: Yeah, and if they can get Brian Kelly, he could become the first coach to win a conference title at two different schools then bail on that team to coach someone else in a bowl game. -
sjmvsfscs08I'd like to see Notre Dame accept a bowl bid to the Lil' Caesars Bowl in Detroit, let Charlie Weis coach the team and watch them demolish Ohio or Central Michigan.
Charlie is a good guy and did a lot for the university. He deserves to finish out his tenure at Notre Dame with a bowl victory. His players absolutely love him and more importantly respect him. Have him coach the bowl game and have Bob Stoops take over the following day.
He's going to be just fine post-Notre Dame, I've read six NFL teams have already contacted him about being their Offensive Coordinator. -
Red_Skin_PrideStupid is as stupid does.
Beginning with ND forcing Holtz out, its been largely a cornucopia of bad decisions by administration, making you scratch your head and go, "Wtf?" Now, it has seemed to rub off on some of their players. That's like a high school football team turning down a birth in the playoffs if they are scheduled to play somewhere they don't want to go. I root for ND when they're not playing OSU or a few other schools, but sometimes some to the "logic" they use over certain topics just rubs me the wrong and way, and makes you wonder what in the hell they're doing over there. -
NateND is a joke. I don't know why someone likes Stoops would leave Oklahoma for there.

lol, had a few brain cells slit their wrists after reading that gem. -
sleeperNotre Dame is an arrogant program who thinks they are too good for the Papajohns.com bowl. Guess what Irish fans? That's all you're good enough for, be lucky you even get that.
-
rock_knutneLMAO at some the posts on here. That's right, ND is popular enough to the point that they can pick and choose what bowl they want to go to or even reject an offer with a 6-6 record. I know they suck and they're overrated but guess what, they are the only school that can have this scenario because they are college football's biggest attraction even in their current state of chaos. I know that pisses some of you off but it's reality.
