    Solid drive by Cory Joseph.

    Go Big Ten!

Gophers knock off #8 UNC, 72-67. Gritty win tonight! Gophs might just be for real this year.
  • gorocks99
wildcats, UNC is a lot better than they played tonight. They couldn't hit ANYTHING (which was partially Minnesota's defense, but partially just bad luck). I think they'll be in the ACC mix all season as long as they figure out the inside game a little more.

    Way to go goofers!

The Big Ten schedule is going to be a meat grinder this year.

I recorded the Carolina game tonight...doubt if I watch a single second of it.

Apparently the perimeter success was an isolated incident against Hofstra. What an awful shooting performance from the Heels against Minnesota. I'm not gonna panic, but I don't like this at all.

You really should. Tubby ball was fun tonight;)

Uh, there is a "bit" of a difference in playing Hofstra compared to Minny. lol Tubby Smith teams are usually very good defensively.

Uh, I'm aware of that. Carolina shot 36.9% from the field, inlcuding 22.2% from behind the arc against Minnesota though. I don't care how good the Gophers are defensively, a team should NEVER shoot those percentages. I didn't expect them to repeat the Hofstra performance, but it would be nice to see them make some shots, or even knock down free throws. Carolina will continue to lose games like this if they can't make a jump shot.

    Today's bigger games:

Vanderbilt vs #8 UNC, 5:30pm ESPN2 (Puerto Rico Tip-Off consolation)
#21 Georgetown vs NC State, 7:30pm ESPNU (Charleston Classic championship)
Minnesota vs West Virginia, 7:30pm ESPN2 (Puerto Rico Tip-Off championship)

The Vandy game is HUGE for Carolina. They have upcoming games at Illinois, home against Kentucky, and in Greensboro against Texas. They can't afford a loss to Vanderbilt.

Hope the Gophers take down WVU in the final in Puerto Rico.

Looking forward to the night games. Currently, I'm watching five-time national champ Indiana try to stave off Evansville. (Fortunately for IU fans, the Hoosiers are now pulling away from the Aces.)

Carolina absolutely must win today to turn the tide on all of the negativity presently surrounding the program (chiefly the fans at IC who are about to break violently apart) and move toward getting back to The Tar Heel Method or whatever catch-phrase it is that they follow in Chapel Hill. I think a loss, at this point and after last year's debacle, could be really bad, especially for the mindsets of Carolina's already-mentally beaten and exhausted players.

I think UNC will take Vandy by 10 or 30, regrettably.

UNC just doesn't look very good again. Outside of maybe 2 players I just don't see elite talent. They are in big time need of a capable PG.

Carolina is simply AWFUL. I know it's early in the season, but they just don't do anything well. When they're forced to run half-court sets, they look completely lost. They can't shoot the ball from the perimeter, they can't consistently make free throws, and the post game isn't consistent either. They turn the ball over constantly, and their transition opportunities are ruined most of the time because they can't take care of the basketball, make good decisions, or finish at the rim. The defense seems pretty decent at times (when they decide to play hard), but they still leave too many shooters wide open, and have way too many mental lapses.

There IS talent on this team, at least enough to be a Top 20 basketball team, but it's just not coming together. Like I said, it's early, but it looks to me like this is going to be another long season. The non-conference schedule will be very tough, and if this team somehow survives that without falling apart, ACC play won't be kind to them again this year. I'm just not very optimistic at this point.

Gophers beat WVU 74-70 to win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Can't wait for Joseph to come back!

Minnesota over West Virginia in the final, 74-70. Minnesota is a top 15 team. There are going to be some brutal games in Big Ten play this year.

Great tournament for the tunneling hamsters. :)

I feel really good for Orlando Smith right now. Tubby's one of my favorite guys in the game.
  • Mulva
Old Dominion beat Clemson 61-60, and will take on the Xavier - Seton Hall winner in the Paradise Jam championship. That game is tied at 52 with under a minute left.

ODU blew what should have been a win over Georgetown to open the season... it looks like they'll be a tough team this year.

FWIW, Carolina fell to 25 after losing 2 straight. They don't deserve to be ranked though.
  • wildcats20
Kemba Walker is a beast. 25 points in 21 minutes with foul trouble. And taking this game over now.

I was shocked that UNC remained ranked, but Vanderbilt (who beat UNC) and West Virginia (who beat Vanderbilt) weren't. Did the coaches vote without waiting for yesterday's results?
  • wildcats20
I don't really know. I mean they dropped 17 places after losing 2 games, you don't see that too often in college bball. They should NOT have been anywhere near the top 10 in the first place, but it is what it is. I think they can play well enough to hang around the 20-25 area all year, but not much higher.

However, the Gophers went from unranked to 17th. That is HUGE. And they absolutely deserve it. I think they will be in the hunt for the Big Ten title all year and very well may pull it off come the end of the year.
