that_guyI think Kelly was a pretty good hire, but really coaches need at least a couple years to judge (except for some who are just a bad fit from day 1- Callahan at Nebraska, Rich Rod at Michigan). I do question how well he'll recruit at ND, and haven't followed their recruiting since he's been there so I don't know how well he's doing...
I didn't watch today's game yet, but have it on DVR. I think Michigan State's a pretty good team, and could finish in the top 4 of the Big 10 if they get their secondary issues figured out. The Michigan game would have been different had Crist gotten hurt. Notre Dame is not a bad team, but this year they actually have a pretty tough schedule, and they could struggle these next few years...
Bottom line- He's an improvement over Weiss, but I'm kind of glad they've started slow so some of the more obnoxious fans won't be going around proclaiming him as the greatest mind in Football. I do think if he's given time he'll bring Notre Dame back to a yearly Top 10ish program, but looking at their schedule this year could be a struggle... -

killdeerno surprises here...
as i have said on here many times before; Notre Dame, as it stands now, is irrelevant in college football...
they are a quaint and memorable historical oddity, kind of like rotary phones, and polaroid cameras.
until they see the value of consistently solid and legitimate conference play, they will remain a has-been in BCS play.
If you Domers love ND, you will encourage them to "lower themselves" to join a powerhouse conference.
Independent play in 2010 is either for non-BCS schools who have no other choice to acheive legitimacy....
or for historical relics that mistakenly think that they represent some kind of royalty in NCAA football.
pick which one you are. -
dwccrewIMO MSU looked good on the ground, but Cousins is a terrible QB.
-
Red_Skin_PrideHey, give Aaron Bates some credit! Former John Glenn Little Muskie from the MVL! Pretty cool to see a kid from a high school like that make a game winning play in a big rivalry game. Good job Sparty.

RotinajI dont mind ND but Kelly annoys me.

ZombaypirateThe coaching is obviously not the problem. The team is not much different than under Weiss.
When you see Notre Dame succeed at the highest level again it will be because they changed their policies regarding student athletes.
There are far too many top recruits who do not qualify to enter Notre Dame.

What type of classes should I be taking in high school?
Applicants to Notre Dame are encouraged to take the most demanding curriculum offered at their high schools. Usually this includes four years of English, math, foreign language, science, and history. The minimum requirements, however, are as follows:
•For students intending to enter the College of Arts and Letters or the Mendoza College of Business, excluding the Arts and Lettrs premedical/predental program and the combined Arts-Engineering program, the 16 required units must be distributed as follows: 4 units of English; 3 units of math, including Algebra, Advanced Algebra, and Geometry; 2 units of foreign language; 2 units of history; and 3 units of additional history, science, foreign language, mathematics, and English courses.
•For students intending to enter the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the School of Architecture, the Arts and Letters premedical/predental program, or the combined Arts-Engineering program, the 16 required units must be distributed as follows: 4 units of English, 4 units of mathematics, including algebra, advanced
algebra, geometry, and advanced mathematics (e.g., trigonometry, pre-calculus, or calculus); 2 units of foreign language; 1 unit of chemistry; 1 unit of physics; and 2 units of additional history, science, foreign language, mathematics, and English courses. -
ZombaypirateTo continue to above, there are many top atheletes who do not take algebra let alone advanced algebra and the other classes needed to enter a University as prestigious academic wise as Notre Dame.
They will never again perform at a top level without either lowering the standards or allowing players to slide by and making exceptions for them.
There are many many athletes who struggle with reading comprehension, let alone taking an algebra course in High school.
I am not saying they cannot be a very competitive team, but they will not be amongst the elite teams year in and year out. -

LMAO....I have a hunch that a majority of BCS-level players would fail these qualifications. Why should we expect Touchdown Jesus to expect higher standrads at Notre Dame?Zombaypirate;489274 wrote:The coaching is obviously not the problem. The team is not much different than under Weiss.

centralbucksfanFirst of all, its Kelly first season. So being 1-2 is no big deal obviously. I think Kelly is a quality coach. How much he turns ND around, is yet to be determined though. Winning at Grand Valley, Cent Mich and UC is much different then coaching and winning at ND. He now isn't going to sneak up on anyone.
And last nite, he coaching decisions were questionable big time. 50+ passes? Going for it on 4th down late in game, in opponents territory? LUCKY that didn't cost them game.
And we keep hearing about all this talent that Weis brought in...yet they can't be two teams, UM and MSU that probably didn't come within 20 spots of recruiting rankings in same time span. Who knows.
But its early, and WAY too early to judge Kelly or ND. -
TheMightyGatorsHe didn't go for it on 4th down in the opponents territory, he went for it in their own territory.

Ya, that. -
Cleveland BuckI was amused by Nessler and Blackledge trying to teach Kelly how to coach big time football. You can go for it on 4th and 1 in your own territory in the Big East, because who is going to stop you?

Another intelligent post. Add nothing to the value of this board. -
Zombaypirateccrunner609;489530 wrote:So now that we know ND doesnt get players becasue they cant get into ND....can we now stop the "top recruiting class bullshit" every year?
It should be stopped. Where is Boise St in the rankings for recruiting? They would pound Notre Dame into oblivion. Those recruiting rankings are a joke.
Not much difference in a kid ranked 100 and another ranked 96 it also does not account for growth, which many are still growing and putting on man muscle. I laugh every year at the so called top recruiting classes. -
dwccrew
Yeah his stats were ok, but damn he looked like shit. His decision making is terrible (INT that he threw in the endzone and when he stepped over the LOS and then back and threw the ball). I just wasn't impressed with Cousins.

HE was either great or he was bad with some decisions. There were times he should have thrown the ball away instead of taking a sack. But he also made some very good decisions. Overall, I thought he played ok though. I mean, his team racked up almost 500 total yards and 34pts. A "shitty" QB's offense doesn't do that unless the QB played halfway decent at the very least. -

I think the offense looked good because of the running game though. The running game is MSU's strong point, Cousins is a very mediocore QB. Just my opinion.
