Better Ohio State Offense: 1998 or 2006?

  • mallymal614
I was just debating a friend about this so I thought I should ask you all. Of course the majority of the people going to think 1998 was the better team, but I'm talking about strictly offense. 1998 or 2006?

Great question ... without looking at stats, I would have to say 2006. Troy was better than Germaine (at least that year), Pittman and Beanie were better than Michael Wiley, and Ginn and Gonzo were right up there with Boston and company.

Yeah, w/o looking at stats and schedule, the 2006 team. Still, that 1998 team was special.

2006's offense was the best under Tressel, I would say 2006's offense. But overall it is 1998. That team should have been NC's, we really can't say that about 2006. 2006 could have, but 1998 SHOULD have.

The 98 offense was better IMO, much better. Saying Smith was better than Germaine is arguable. Germaine could flat out throw the ball and IMO, was the best pure passer to play at OSU in as long as I can remember. That team certainly had the issue in the MSU game upset...but the offense put up enough points to win that game. They NEVER laid an egg as the 06 team did (smith in general!) in the title game.
That 98 team was a great team. Best team in nation that year IMO. I mean they averaged close to 500yds per game on offense!!
Germaine threw for more yards then Smith did that year. Although he didn't have as many TD passes. But he also showed up in the Rose Bowl in '97 with a great clutch performance , and led OSU to victory in the Sugar Bowl with this team.

    QB Stats:
    Germaine:
    3300yds, 25TD 7int
    60% completions

    Smith
    2500yds 30TD 6int
    65% completions

    The 1998 Offensive avg.
    497yds per game.
    Over 500yds in 8 games
    Over 600yd game vs Iowa
    36 pts per game average.

    The 2006 offense
less then 400yds per game total offense.
    Only breaking 500yds twice.
    34pts per game

    They were both great offenses...

Can you guys answer me a question:

How the hell did that '98 team not win a National Title??

John Cooper. More specifically, they overlooked a talented Michigan State team and paid for it.

I agree...didn't they lose to someone they had no business losing to?

How many people on this site followed OSU in 98? Probably very few.

Pretty solid harbinger that Nick Saban was the real deal.

I was 16. I was already a bucknut!! I'll never forget letting that game slip away. At halftime, with the offense we had, I thought for sure the game was over.

Don't try to say ppl on here are just becoming buckeye fans, otherwise you aren't as wise as I thought. If you are born here it's the lifestyle.

I loved that team. 142 points in the first two games. Micheal Wiley!!!

Didn't Wiley score the first 3 times he touched the ball or something??

What I was saying, many people on this site are 18-22 year olds (im guessing) and probably alot of people on this site didnt start watching them until 02 or 06. Not trying to start an argument or nothing. Alot of people can wear OSU clothes and have family members that are huge fans, but alot of people dont start watching games until they mature. Video games and chasing girls are more important to most youngsters.

I admit it. I'm 20 and three older sisters and older brother didn't care for college football when I was young. I didn't start watching football until 2002 when Ohio State tore it up and Notre Dame started 8-0.

I bleed purple and yellow. Huge Vikings fan also. I would tell my story, but Ive been asked this a million times and I get tired of rewriting the same thing every time. Oh, and to my last post.......if someone was 15 and watching the bucks closely in 98, they would be 27-28 years old right now. I dont think a ton of people on here are that age........at least they dont act it.

Maybe I'm just different. Or I guess was spoiled. My great grandpa(grandad) and grandpa and my uncles started taking me to new lex football games when I was about 4. Every Friday night. Got to go see the buckeyes when I was 5.

It was embedded into me. They have videos of me playing one one one football by myself in the yard. I had nobody to play with out in the boonies.

But I understand how some kids don't really really "care" till probably high school. And anymore, they ask kids to practice or be involved with so many things that even in hs it could be hard to always see your team play.

I'm 28, but I agree with you and I hadn't thought of it that way.

Im almost 32, but I dont remember what year I started following cfb heavily. I remember the early 90's I watched Miami often and loved wearing their shirts and hats but I wasnt a true fan. I didnt start going to games until the middle-late 90's. I saw Lou Holtz and USCe play Kentucky and LSU play Kentucky for my first 2 games.

I was 11 years old in 1998. I watched every down of the Michigan State game and cried when they lost. I also cried when Jake the Snake scored late in the Rose Bowl and then high stepped around the house after Germaine hit Boston for the W. I cried a lot back in the day.

I've been following OSU football since 1967 when Rex Kern led the Buckeyes to the NC by beating OJ Simpson's USC Trojans in the 1968 Rose Bowl. Most Chatter-types weren't even a gleam in their daddy's eyes in 1967.

When you're comparing offensive stats remember in 1998 we didn't have a running clock and teams got probably 15 more plays per game than they do now or in 2006. A ridiculous rule to shorten games just for TV.

And when your comparing stats, you need to look at difficulty of the schedule as well. The 1998 team beat 5 ranked teams. The 2006 team was 3-1 vs ranked teams.
And that 15 more plays per game would still not equate to the almost 500yds per game the 1998 team put up at will.
Being OLD ENOUGH to vividly remember that team...again, I think the 1998 team was flat out better offensively, and as an entire team.

The 98 Buckeyes should have won a title. They were rolling over Michigan State and Damon Moore picked them off and ran it back for a touchdown. Like an idiot, he leaped into the end zone and hurt his shoulder taking him out of the game. That put Ohio State ahead 24-9, but MSU scored 19 unanswered. I had tickets, but was sick that day so I couldn't make it. I felt even worse after the game was over.

That MSU team did have some pretty talented players. Sedrick Irvin and Plaxico Burris. I think there might have been one or two more guys that played a bit in the NFL.

    Definitely 1998.
