Better Ohio State Offense: 1998 or 2006?

  • Manhattan Buckeye
The 1998 team wasn't just the best Ohio St. team in my lifetime, they may have been the best college football team of the 90's, I'm certainly old enough to remember the Michigan St. game - that was a kick to the stomach. What made the loss even worse was the craptacular national championshp game between FSU and Tennessee (Tennessee won, who should have lost to Arkansas a few weeks earlier). OSU would have beaten either team by two touchdowns. Aside from the Michigan St. disaster, they didn't win a game by fewer than 15 points until the Sugar Bowl, where the game was never really in question.

They were very very good...but they weren't as good as that '95 Nebraska team. That was the best CFB in history

I would put the '98 OSU team 2nd though

    '84 & '95 could be considered also.

When it Comes to the 90s

    1. 1995 Nebraska
    2. 1998 Ohio State
    3. 1994 Penn State

would they have beaten them as bad as they beat Michigan St. that year? See the difference between the 3 schools?

    Nope.

    2001 Miami

    S. Taylor
    E. Reed
    J. Shockey
    A. Johnson
    N. Davenport
    C. Portis
    W. McGahee
    Br. McKinnie
    V. Wilfork
    W. Joseph
    DJ Williams
    J. Vilma
    P. Buchanon
    M. Rumph

That's the best collection of talent ever seen. That's not even including Frank Gore who was injured that year as well as freshman Kellen Winslow.

    "P. Buchanon
    M. Rumph"

Buchanon was bad enough, but Rumph might well be the worst Cornerback to ever start an NFL game. He got by in college with his athleticism (and his teammates). But got exposed day 1 in the NFL.

NFL stats have nothing to do with how good a player was in college.

    Eric Crouch
    Salaam
    Troy Smith
    Matt Leinart

So because those guys flopped in the pros it takes away how good they were in college? Don't think so.

Don't understand how you can fault him for what he said. OSU's offense was badly exposed in the national championship game. Just because you're pissed at Florida and their fans doesn't mean he's wrong.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
Was Rumph really good in college? Looks to me he was pedestrian at best....and yeah, NFL success isn't a measure, but Rumph was epically awful. He was a first round pick that had to switch positions in the first year because he was so bad and the 49'ers already paid him first round money and had to keep him to save face. Again, not a joke - Rumph was probably the worst starting Cornerback in NFL history.

No offense, but I don't buy into the "exposed". One game doesn't not equate to being "exposed". That is the beauty of college sports, it is only one game compared to a series in pro sports. Upsets are not exactly rare. IN pro sports, they are as the better team typically comes out in a series of games.
Nothing against Fla, they were the better team that nite, no question at all.

Okay and Eric Crouch had to try out as a SAFETY. So again, you CAN'T use NFL results as a nullifier or qualifier of college talent.

And Rumph was all Big East in 2000 and 2001. And opponents rarely threw at him. So yes, he was good.

Just curious cbf, do you think OSU would have won a series with Florida? Everyone thought OSU and Michigan were so great that year and there was a decent argument that could have been made for Michigan still deserving to get into the championship game. (I felt like the BCS was manipulated by everyone so they didn't get that shot. If I remember correctly UM was still 2nd in the BCS the week after that game. They didn't fall until everyone decided they didn't want them to get the rematch.) But after Florida whipped OSU and USC whipped Michigan I think they were both highly over rated that year.

I am not pissed at Florida fans. Do you know me? No need to jump to conclusions.

Yes, OSU shit the bed in the BCS title game. But with Ginn out, and Smith not looking Gonzo's way after banging his girlfriend (which led to a fight), was that really an accurate portrayal of OSU's true offense that night?

Why aren't you pissed at Gibby/Ty Webb? He's an embarrassment to all college football fans. I was just busting your chops BAB you know I don't have anything against you.

And yes, what happened that night wasn't necessarily an accurate portrayal of OSU's true offense that year, but we also don't know what would have happened at full strength. I will always wonder what if...

We're cool man, I reread my post, didn't mean to sound that pissy! :P

In retrospect, I just looked at some of the scores from that '98 team (I had season tickets that year, and that MSU loss still kills me) -- man we really kicked some ass that year. I may have to change my vote ...

On a side note, this 2010 team is racking up over 40 points per game! ...

Did you or have you ever watched any film of the '95 Nebraska team. They had 3 backs average 100 yards a game, and won each game by almost 40 points. They completly destroyed what was at the time believed to be the best Florida team ever

They would have beaten that '01 Miami team by atleast 28 points

Though I agree Nebraska probably wins that game, but not by 28 points lol. Give 2001 Miami more props than that because they were dominant as well.

I'll take Miami's D that year over Nebraska's O. You think that team would be able to run for a ton of yards against a team with Vince Wilfork, Ed Reed, DJ Williams, Jon Vilma among others? Not in my opinion.

That Florida team they beat didn't have anything special on D either, it was strictly in the title game because of the awesome offense.

The fact you think Nebraska would win by 28+ tells me all I need to know about your (lack of) college football knowledge.

We'll agree to disagree. The Big East sucked back then. I don't care about voting for Big East honors. I care about talent. And Rumph couldn't guard a paper bag - and was exposed immediately in the NFL. He simply sucked big time, doesn't even begin to belong on that list of players.

Couldnt tell ya.....but it was the first team out of 4 teams from the SEC to win titles in the BCS era for a total of 6. Compared to the Big 10's one title.
