Most overrated teams of the past several years?

  • redfalcon
Who are they? Although they aren't all ranked right now, the ones that have been over the past several years that I can think of:

    Virginia Tech
    Wisconsin
    Tennessee
    Notre Dame
    California
  • dave
    Iowa
    Oregon
    USC
  • Mulva
For a specific team, 2008 Georgia. No business whatsoever being a preseason #1.

Overall I would say it has to be Florida State. Preseason top 20 in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009 (top 15 in '05 and top 10 in '06), finished unranked 3 of those years, and in 2005 they barely finished in the rankings with 5 losses.

    Eh...

Virginia Tech is always a solid team. I feel like in general the ACC has been overrated the past 5 years or so. They have quite a few solid teams, but no great ones. But the media wants to ordain those better ACC teams as great ones.

    Florida State
Clemson( for whatever reason it seems like they're hyped pretty big most years when they had Spiller and Co. but would still manage to lose 4-5 games a year)
    Cal

Georgia for me. Virginia Tech is up there but I think their defense is always that good that it warrants a high ranking until the offense shows its inability to score.

Not really adding any new teams but:

Virginia Tech - always seems to work its way into the top 10 and either gets annihilated in one game or loses to some low rent chump school
Florida State and Notre Dame - every year they are supposed to be back to themselves of like 20 years ago
Clemson - should never start the season ranked
Cal - was picked for like six straight years to be the one who dethrones USC...never really happened
Hot Big East team - I know somebody has to be ranked, but it seems like I've heard about all of these programs turning some kind of corner in the last few years - South Florida, Rutgers, Pitt, Cincy....even WVU. They've each had a temporary - very temporary in some cases - nice run and that is about the extent of it. It is a fun conference to watch when they play each other because there are a lot of close games and they probably aren't as bad as some of the other extreme views, it just seems like when a team gets hot there they get a lot of press right before they choke it all away.

enigmaax, I was going to say a few of those Big East teams but I couldn't choose just one. I agree with your assessment

First team that comes to mind is Florida State followed by Georgia, Auburn, and Notre Dame.

    Oklahoma might need some mention.

Eh I mean they made a national title game and fared pretty well, losing to a more talented team, and then last year they had to deal with the Bradford injury.
  • karen lotz
what does several years mean? They have been ranked top 10 every year for a while...
  • redfalcon
    lets say since 2000.
  • karen lotz
You are right about the 2008 title game, thought that was a few more years ago than that.

They usually end up there, too. I know they've been on a big BCS skid, but I don't know that there's always a team that should've been there over them (until you consider the game result after the fact).

lol that's a bit more than several years. A lot can happen to the state of a program over 10 years.
  • redfalcon
Fair enough, how about since 2005.

    As of today, Boise St.

vt is one of two teams to win 10 games per season for the past 6 years and the other team is texas. How can vt be overrated with that track record?

Huhhh? They were loaded and finished 2nd the season before. How could they not of been picked preseason #1? Its not like people knew they would lose alot of their team due to injuries/suspensions.

They have 10 wins every season, but they have been ranked as high as 5th and they always have at least 2 losses. Overrated.

well the thread is about the overrated teams of the last several years. and in those last several years LSU has been highly overrated twice.

in 2009 they were ranked in the top ten for 8 weeks of the sesaon, with a preseason ranking of 11 and finished with four losses including to a slow penn state team in the capital one bowl

in 2008 they started off ranked 7th and climbed as high as 4th but ultimately finished with back to back losses to unranked teams including once at home. good thing they won the highly prestigious chick-fil-a bowl.

    sounds pretty overrated too me.
