Why are Buckeye fans not happy with Tressel?

  • tcby99
    I just don't get it...

    5 straight Big Ten Titles
    BCS game after BCS game
    1 national title
    2 runner-up

    8-1 vs Michigan

What more can you ask for?
  • devil1197
Because we have ran into some bad luck in BCS games (which will happen when you make them every year, sometimes when you are rebuilding per say (LSU game).

Also, because OSU hasn't conformed to the style of play that most teams do.

After watching Les Miles choke away that game against Ole Miss, I have a new found respect for Tress

But I still bring it up again and again, he really needs an OC. Sure his playcalling and strategy works against the Michigans and Iowas of the world, but it isn't going to win any games against the big boys of the NCAA

would you rather be a Notre Dame or Michigan fan right now...Or have Coop back at the helm.
  • jordo212000
Didn't say I want Tress fired. And didn't say I would rather be Notre Dame or Michigan. Not sure why that gets thrown out there.

The point is that Florida, LSU, Texas, and USC do not have Tate Forcier playing QB. If he doesn't play like complete garbage Ohio State may have found themselves losing. The strategy of waiting for the other team doesn't work when you play the good ones. They need to find an offense

Ohio State fans don't like Tressel because they see teams like Florida or Texas blow teams out and expect OSU to do the same. Our offense isn't "sexy" and people don't like that.

I don't care about sexy offenses. I care about having an offense that can beat the better teams in the country. Funny that you mention Texas and Florida. Two teams that have beat Ohio State in recent BCS games.

Jordo, funny thing is OSU ran the offense I bet you want to run against Florida. Smith's SR year was a spread like team that most programs run these days.
  • jordo212000
I haven't said I want Ohio State to run any kind of specific offense. I just want some creativity. The reason they lost to Florida was they refused to adjust inside the game. Also, Ohio State's offensive tackles who were on roller skates the whole game didn't exactly help our case. Alex Boone made Jarvis Moss and Derrick Harvey a lot of money in that game

I just get tired of predicting exactly what play Ohio State is going to run. If I know, D1 coaches know.

I can't really take you seriously though when you tell me that you don't think Utah was very good last season.

OSU lost that game when Tressel refused to adjust to Florida's gameplan. He got completely outcoached...which seems to be a reoccurring theme in games outside of the Big Ten lately.
  • devil1197
Yes, he got out coached but people do not remember that Tressel did run a more open offense Smith's SR year.

I think Utah was good last year but not great. The other top teams would have beaten them (Florida, Oklahoma, USC, Texas) etc.

Which is exactly why OSU fans get upset with Tress.

Sure his record as someone above outlined speaks volumes. The issue is Tress Ball works OK against average D1 teams, but against the D1 elite, not so much.

I like Tress and do not want to see him fired. I just wish he'd get his head out of the past and open things up.

I don't think anyone wants JT fired, we all just want a new OC thats all. JT is one of the best head coaches in the country.

Chridt, I an a huge Tressel fan. We could do better with a different offensive coordinator, but we are damn lucky to have him and I want to keep him.

If Russel makes the tackle in the Fiesta Bowl, this wouldn't even be a conversation imo.

OSU was just outplayed by Florida, no way around that loss imo. But the LSU game was hard for the Buckeyes. That was a team that was out of the NCG picture after beating UM. Then suddenly teams decide to piss down their legs and the rebuilding Buckeyes were shown the back door to the NCG. They weren't ready. We played right with Texas but Russell misses the tackle.

If my aunt had a dong she'd be my Uncle. If Ohio State scores more offense the Texas TD is moot. Get it? We can do this all day.

No argument about Florida. The fact Tress was so badly overmatched needs mentioned.

I dont buy the argument about LSU. You aren't rebuilding if you are playing in the National Championship game haha. In fact Ohio State was in the driver's seat for the National championship game until they lost to Illinois with a few weeks left in the season.

I agree about the LSU game. If that was our "rebuilding year" (i.e. excuse for LSU destroying us, it wasn't terrible discipline or coaching or anything like that, it was that we were "rebuilding"), what happened the next year then?
  • devil1197
Yes, OSU was rebuilding imo. When you lose a Heisman winner, the #1 and #2 receiver and Hall, most of the OL and DL, and other starters. They were not even in the title picture after the UM game. It took multiple losses by other teams for OSU to get into the game. They were young at key positions.

The next year OSU just choked. There was no reason for that team, with all the experienced talent, to have a season like that.

No one is ever happy. We didn't win, didn't win by enough, can't beat a top ten team. It's allways something.
  • jordo212000
Trep. There is no sense in arguing man. I still don't understand how you are rebuilding as you are playing in the National Championship. And if they were "rebuilding," I still don't understand how you end up playing in a lesser bowl the next year.

We should be happy if we don't win or can't beat a top ten team? Got it. Man, I've been doing this sports thing wrong for years now.

Because the experienced senior group choked and didn't show up the next season. Please don't be that arrogant in your posting to not realize the massive potential the 2008 team had and how bad they just simply choked.

If you lose this on offense along with a majoirty of the OL and DL plus other starters from the 2006 team.

2500+ passing yards, 30 TD passes/200+ rushing yards 1 TD
1200+ rushing yards, 14 TD runs
1800+ receiving yards, 19 TD receptions

Yeah, there is no rebuilding on offense there. You lose 75% of your offense production.
  • jordo212000
Ohio State doesn't rebuild. Please. You act like we are some 2 bit program. One guy leaves for the NFL another replaces him.

Yeah, its not rebuilding when you replace a Heisman winner with a guy that threw 3 total passes the entire season in 2006. Also, a horrible offensive line that was hidden by Wells being a beast from 2007-2008.

Yes, Ohio State is a great program but in 2007 the weak B10 schedule and a terrible OOC schedule(YSU, Washington, Akron, Kent State) along with several teams losing after the UM game gave the "not" ready OSU team a trip the NCG.

What "massive potential" did the 2008 team have? I just saw the same group of guys who sucked against Florida and sucked against LSU. And guess what? In 2008 they sucked against USC and sucked (albeit, sucked less) against Texas.

Its pretty clear that we were not one of the two best teams in 2007. However, that does not make it a "rebuilding" year. It's more of a testament to:
    a) how terrible the Big Ten was that year
    and
    b) how much parity there was in college football that year
