Orrville Red Riders vs Newton Falls Tigers

  • riders1
Well "survive and move on " and it's on to the next bracket line for the REGIONAL FINALS. How many Rider or Tiger fans thought this back in December? Newton Falls fans probably remembers when Orrville beat them back in 95 or 96 on our way to Columbus, at least that is what 1 Tiger fan was saying on the way out last night. I've seen to many games over the years and need a regionals refresher. I know the Columbus games but need some help on the regionals to knock the cobwebs aside. Who did we play in Regionals back then? Looks to be another great game coming up and seems like a good matchup. I know Falls played in the league with Campbell Memorial ( that's one regional game I remember and still say the kid stepped out of bounds under the basket) Labrae, Brookfield, Girard, and Champion. They were the 1 seed at Warren with a lot of league teams in there also. Any more info on them?

We beat NF 79-45 in a regional semifinal back in 1995. They brought a huge fanbase and made some noise early, but they were really overmatched.

Gotta come out and play with the same intensity that we did last night. Play with that chip on your shoulder.

Wanted to again compliment the kids on their effort last night. Played with great heart.

Who did we beat in the finals, and who were the 95 games against?
  • RedRider1
1992..Beat St V. in the reg. finals....Liberty in the semis

1993...beat Cleve. Central in the semis....lost to Campbell Memorial in the finals.

1995..beat Newton Falls in semis....Mooney in the finals

1996.....beat Poland in the semis..VASJ in the finals. (This was at the JAR)

We're now 8-1 in our last 9 regional games. Riders know what to do in "winning time"

Good luck, Orrville! I would love to see you in Columbus next week!

I watched both game last night and comparing NF to Orrville IMO. The Orrville kids a technique better. The position for rebounds, defensive support and the coach control of the kids to control the tempo of the game is impressive. NF on the other hand lives with the 3’s, long rebounds and they make things happen when there is “confusion / street ball” in the play. That the best as I can explain it. NF is not a patient type team they want to semi-run and get the defensive break down, offensive street ball play so they can spot up for the 3.
It will be difficult for NF to match up under the boards for both offensive and defensive rebounds. Orrville should not take this game lightly because the 3’s that NF put up will keep them in the game. Another factor in this game is the beach strength and Orrville has a hands up in this area.

What people don’t understand is that The Field House is a big court. I have played many a game on this hard wood and it is bigger than most. Not like some of these schools are uses to playing on. This is where the beach and a strong play from the beach can be a game changer. Providing time for player to recover.

If you look at the EC vs NF game you will notice that in the 4th period NF 3 percentage dropped two reason one EC start to recover quicker to the shooter and the leg fatigue. Also the rebounding of NF also dropped off a lot. In the last few minutes of the EC /NF game EC was getting 3 or 4 possession off the offensive boards again NF fatigue.

    I could see a Orrville by 20

I would love to see Orrville by 20! I for one do not think that will happen. Our kids better be ready for a tough game. I am not nearly as confident as some. Let's just be ready to go Saturday.

NF likes to shoot the three ball, but I wouldn't say they are completely dependent on it. They were 6-11 from the three point range, while EC was 6-32 (according to the newspaper). That is big difference in attempts, although EC was taking a lot of threes in the last two mintues to try to back in it so the number is skewed a bit. They won plenty of games this year only makine a couple 3's. They do get impatient on offense though at times. This may be due to wanting to be uptempo, or perhaps because they are a young team with several sophomores and one freshman logging a lot of minutes.

That being said, I don't know anything about Orrville and will make no attempt to predict the keys to this game or what the outcome may be.

And also congrats to Coach Sembach on his 300th victory.

Redrider1 : As the self proclaimed historian. Why is it that you seem to forget the FIRST EVER Orrville Basketball team to make the trip to Columbus. Do your homework and give us the team that they beat in the Regional Finals 1980. A last second Shot . Who made it? 20 years ago this week was also a very special time . 2 members from that team are no longer with us . It would be nice to remember them and their families.
    Good Luck Riders
    Thanks

    80,
I wasnt even 3 yrs old in 1980...contribute something and I'd be glad to post it....sorry, I have no personal recollection of it as it was well before my time.

I dont proclaim myself to be anything but a fan....sorry if I'm not meeting your expectations. For what I get paid, I really should do a better job.

Couple of shorts....a wachtel...a schrock...stoudmire. That's what I know. Feel free to share what you know and experience with the rest of us.

    Share something....scores, results, opponents.

article from the 1980 regional game costs $2.95 for the full text. You buy it and send it to me, I'll post it for the world to see.

dont come at me like i'm somehow ignoring your teams accomplishment....I've had many readers email me old pictures and articles and it makes my day.....but be proactive....there's never been anything that I've been sent and havent found a way to include

You could also start something yourself, as I did 2 yrs ago. It's worked out pretty well for me.

If we're lucky enough to win on Saturday, I'd love to do something on the 1980 team....30 yrs after the first trip to Columbus. But I have nothing to base it on...that's where i'd need your help. If you're willing, let's do it.

If not, no problem, thanks for reading the site, as always.

It's a whole lot easier to remember State Championships in Orrville. that's the price you pay for living in a town where State"Qualifier" is overshadowed by "Champion"...

I think you may be misremembering the game. Newton Falls was 1-2 from 3 in the 4th quarter which is (albeit by a smaller sample size) a better percentage than they shot for the entire game. East Canton on the other hand missed a lot of 3's in the 4th quarter. Also, leg fatigue was not a factor in their FT shooting as they made a high percentage of their FT's down the stretch to ice the game.

I agree, Orrville does have some very strong beaches.
