...That's funny! The people from Struthers supporting Poland:huh:

It wasn't that long ago that the Poland student section came were wearing "WHITE TRASH" bags to the Poland vs Struthers game( couple of years ago) & calling the Struthers kids by the same name. If that's the case the Struthers people's memories are pretty f'n short!

...Jesus Forgave everyone, why can't Struthers?

    ^^^^^^
I'm sure they can. I just think "that type of thing sticks with people", especially the fine people of Struthers!

Well the "fine people of struthers" would much rather see a public school win, THEN ANY PRIVATE SCHOOL, that does some "not so holy things"

The mooney student section is and was, absoulte trash at the game on wednesday. After the Poland loss, they weren't disrespectful, at all. Struthers -Poland relations are getting better in time, this will just help.

I'm predicting a huge night for the dogs.

...Well to each their own and best of luck to the Struthers Wildcats next year.
One more point, Struthers and Mooney in your post should both be capitalized.

Being from Struthers, I hate both Poland and Mooney. After seeing how trashy and disrespectful Mooney was after the game Wednesday, I realized how much I really do hate Mooney. The way they carried themselves before, during, and even after the game was completely out of line. Thowing snowballs at fans and parents, talking crap to parents, trying to pick fights with innocent students. Thats just wrong. At least Poland wins respectfully. Just my two cents.

Now you are going to correct me on my grammar? LOL Just stop now.

That doesn't disprove any of my points about Mooney being trashy.. Thank you!

LOL why would anyone go help support those Bulldog assholes?! If we would have gotten an "invite" from Poland when I was in school we would have gone--but to cheer against them for the thought of even inviting us. Our battle with the Poland faithful was epic when I was in school.

bulldog8 wrote: Wow! Great win for the Cards. I didn't really see this one coming. Congratulations to Struthers on a fine season, but I hate to tell some of the Struthers fans that "I told you so". I really thought that Struthers would come away with the victory tonight, but I claimed earlier this season that they were yet to be considered one of the valley's elite. Zombienation inquired why this team wasn't getting any respect, but to go 18-2 in the regular season and then bow out in the district semis is the reason some people aren't ready to throw them into discussion with Poland, Campbell, Canfield, and Harding just yet. Yes, I know that Canfield lost in the first round of the District this year, but they were competing in division 1. Although Struthers had a great season, they really didn't have any big time victories and the loss to Mooney will sort of leave a sour ending to an impressive year regarding their record. Irregardless, the young men and the coaching staff should be commended on their accomplishments this year. This program is definitely headed in the right direction, but I think they are just a year or two away.

As far as the district final goes.....I think this will be a very tough game for the Dogs. Mooney plays a very similar style as Canfield and actually beat them earlier this season. Considering how closely Canfield played Poland and how much these two programs dislike each other, I really think that Mooney will give Poland all that they can handle. I'm hoping that FatMatt is right and that Poland's pressure will be too much for the Cards of Mooney to overcome. Whoever wins will certainly represent the Boardman district well in the regional. Here's to hoping for a safe game for both teams and hopefully a little luck on Poland's side :)
I agree with most of your points bulldog, I just have a few points of my own to make. For one, Canfield should not be considered an elite team in my opinion until they can make a run in the D1 tourney. Those are the teams they should be playing, just by beating teams in lower divisions doesn't make them elite in my eyes. And you say Struthers doesn't have any big time victories, but they beat Campbell and you have them as on of the elites in the area?
Very good points made by you as well. I think this year Canfield was 4 boys over the maximum for the division 2 breakdown. Although, they were technically division 1, I think the numbers would show that they were definitely on the lower end of division 1 this year. Next year they will be back in division 2 where I think they will compete on a much higher level. I do consider them "valley" elite, only for the sake of how well they compete in this area. But you are certainly right, Canfield has yet to really go on and make some noise at regionals and/or states.

As far as Struther's win over Campbell, I completely forgot about this game. That is certainly a big time win. I just think another year or two with some big wins over Poland, Canfield, and Campbell will really open more of the local fans eyes as to how much this program is turning around. They had a stretch of bad seasons for a while and it really takes a season like this year to regain some respect. These young men certainly did that and a lot of teams have probably started to worry about what the Cats are capable of.
Canfield will still be Division I next year.

^^^Hmmmm I was unaware of this. Regardless, Canfield is a borderline team and aren't the size of many other D1 schools. Thanks for the clarification futbol4ever.

For those who are unable to attend the game tomorrow or catch it on the radio, WNIO will have an internet broadcast on their website.

For the record, from what i've been told by several people is that when the next enrollement cycle is calculated, Canfield will lose a couple big classes and they will be back comfortablly down in D2.

But anyway, Good luck to both teams tonight, should be a great game

^ the figures are recalculated every 3 years I believe. Canfield might be losing some big classes, but that's the problem throughout Ohio. So they could possibly still be D1 when all said and done.

Good luck tonight, Cards! Play hard...and shake those haters off. Shut them all up tonight!

Poland leads 44-39 at halftime. Baker puts in a basket before the end of the half but refs rule it no good. Announcers seem to think that the basket should count and refs are reviewing the play at the scorer's table. Mooney has 11 turnovers in the first half. Definitely not taking care of the basketball as I expected.
  • bulldog8
Basket is ruled no good. Announcers indicated that the right call was made after looking at the replay. 44-39 at the half.
  • bulldog8
56-51 Dogs at the end of 3....scoring was even in the 3rd at 12-12.

Dogs win 75-65 and advance to the Canton regional to play the winner of Akron Buchtel and ASVSM. Congratulations to the Dogs on the district title and congratulations to Mooney on a fine season. Ben Donlow earns player of the game honors with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mooney turned the ball over 20+ times while Poland only turned it over 5. I really thought Mooney would minimize the mistakes but they proved costly against the Dogs.
  • SQ_Crazies
Sounds like Mooney beat themselves then.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance at Ohio basketball this year as I have been preoccupied, but is Poland still running the up-tempo, full-court pressure game? I know they embraced that a few years ago with some success and I wondered if it is still their style.

It's a 2 year cycle and this is year 1, so whereever a team is this year, they'll also be there next year as well.

They sure are....Poland averages over 80 points per game this season and have eclipsed 100 several times. They rotate 10 players constantly - the first 5 is easily the more talented and senior laden group while the 2nd 5 are mostly underclassmen who are hustle players and are termed the "killer bees." They come off the bench with a lot of energy and work hard to tire the opponent out before bringing in the big 5. Poland has size down low with Baker and Donlow at 6'5" and 6'4" respectively. Poland also shoots very well from the perimeter. The Dogs have looked vulnerable at times this year with their full court pressure as Canfield put up 96 points on them and beat them at their place. Teams that effectively beat Poland's press have the opportunity for some very high percentage shots around the rim. I foresee this being a big problem against ASVSM next Thursday....Hopefully Poland can keep it close and maybe come out on top!

All those blow outs did not get them tournament tested. I always say junk defenses are great a gainst weak teams. SO the high game per average is so misleading. You need to play half court D! I am not rubbing it in. They have very nice talent but the style gets them everytime in the end. Just my humble opinion.
