Toledo City League playoffs

  • hookshot
Central doesn't always play intentionally low-scoring games. Welling does what needs to be done (recently put up 69 against Rogers). CCHS is a few seconds away from being 19-0 at this point. Anyway, great win for the Irish.

Congratulations to Coach Welling and the Central team. At this point, I would have to say that he may be the best coach in the city. His teams really control every facet of the game. They certainly play a lot taller than they are and they consistently are able to dictate the tempo and make their opponents play Central's game. Now let's see how the City league stacks up on the road to Columbus.

KNIGHTXC1 - Take some medication dude. Lowe made no adjustments? He changed defenses at least 3 times maybe 4 times last night, were you there? SFS fans got drunk on watching a 14-year old guard Storm in the post Tuesday, did you really think CCHS would guard him like that? You guys really think you'd shoot the ball as well as you did Tuesday? Check Storm's stats versus CCHS his last 3 games, combined what? 20 points in those 3 games? You comment about removing Flockler on a CCHS FT attempt and a CCHS player getting a rebound over a shorter Knight is wrong, Jay Marquette took the rebound away from Storm. As far as getting the ball into the post, how many lobs passes to Stanley did Mays get to? Being in great help side and being a great athlete made those plays. CCHS guards Storm better than anybody in the area and when you can't make a 3 and turn it over you won't win on any night.
I say congrats to coach Lowe for getting the most out of this group...

Feels a little like Knightxc1 is quick to throw this team under the bus. CCHS deserves the credit for a well played, well coached victory. While it's easy to point fingers after the fact, this team lost to a more talented team in Central. SFS was barely able to make it to the playoffs...and I, for one, am still excited they smoked SJJ like they did on Tuesday - even that was unexpected. And while I still think Storm misses too many put backs and has trouble just going up strong to the rim (he tends to bring the rebounds down first, allowing the defense to have a shot at the ball), there is always a lot of tugging on his arms that is going uncalled in most the games...and this game was not lost on Storm's play - the whole team struggled. It wasn't for lack of desire or effort, it was simply because Central outplayed them and had the perfect plan to do so.

I'm proud of the Knights for making it to the final - and am looking forward to hopefully another SJJ rematch in a week or so... It's been a fun season - full of highs AND lows...but it's a good group of kids and I, for one, continue to be a fan!! Hoping for some more fun in the state playoffs!!

Yea, he changed defense but this is exactly what happened the last game. Went to a zone which allowed Central to just stand up top with the ball and basically run a stall. Was the most boring championship game you will ever see. It was like watching the replay but in a different arena. How does 2 win Scott basically outplay Central the whole game, take them to OT, put up 50 some points and SFS can't get 30? Sorry but there is no excuse for that. Yea, SFS didn't make shots but Lowe changed nothing offensively to try and make Central do anything different. The only times SFS got easy baskets last night were when they pushed the ball up court. Should have been trying to up the tempo the whole game. Storm was on the opposite side of Marquette on that rebound and came into the middle. You don't take your best rebounder out in that situation, you just don't. And the passes into Storm were awful. About 5 of them were right where someone could come take it away. Same thing happened against Rogers. Guards just threw it to him no matter what, even if he was already being doubled, which is what happened last night. Been a problem all year, nothing special Central did, SFS's guards can't throw the ball into a 6'11" kid.

Central used the same gameplan from the last game and SFS did nothing to counter it. Good for Central to do what apparently works. Beating SJ was not unexpected to me. SFS should have beat them the last time around but didn't pound it enough and it was Fockler's first game back from being hurt. Storm does bring the ball down too much, I agree wholeheartedly on that. His lack of any form of a hook shot and ability to jump enough to just dunk some close shots as hurt SFS a bunch this year. 2 times yesterday, he had close in shots where if he had any vertical leap it would have been an easy jam. Game wasn't all his fault but only scoring 3 points in the second half can't happen. Goes on him, teammates, and coaches. The loss goes on everyone. They did a great job fighting back to get to the Final 4 but to go from the great effort against SJ to a very lackluster performance last night is frustrating.

Storm was on the opposite side of Marquette on that rebound

Wrong again, the tape don't lie. You can't keep simple game action striaght. Go get some help.
  • KnightXC1
^^ Sorry, I missed one thing. It doesn't change the fact that taking Fockler out on that foul shot was dumb when SFS has to get that board. Lowe got outcoached, plain and simple.
  • vball10set
if you're going to get outcoached,it may as well be by a coach with the pedigree of Jim Welling...btw,does this mean that Nick outcoached Heintschel(w/over 500 wins)on Tuesday,or did the Knights just outplay the Titans??
  • Swamp Fox
vball makes a good point about Coach Lowe and his team's victory over St. Johns. We always seem to blame coaches for losses and credit the players for wins. Fans are fickle at times...much more fickle after a disappointing loss. I tend to be that way myself on occasion.

    Great post vball

I think coach Lowe has gotten as much as you could of wanted out of this group...

Lowe and the players did a great job in both games against SJ thus far. Lowe and the players have done a terrible job against Central in 2 games thus far. Lowe had a great gameplan against the Titans in both games and the players worked it to perfection. They have been better in both games against SJ and it has showed. Just had an awful gameplan Thursday and no one for SFS stepped up.

It's over and done with, nothing anyone can do. On to the big tourney now.

"Knight" is correct about the situation. It's time to see about how far the NW Ohio teams can get in this season's playoffs, and I think the team with the best chance to advance all the way to Columbus is Liberty Benton. Aaron Craft is the real deal, and the rest of those kids aren't slouches either. They are also used to winning. Right behind them in my opinion, would be Central Catholic and Perrysburg, followed very closely by St. Johns and St. Francis along with Whitmer. Defiance has a nice basketball team also.

Don't ignore Libbey, when their good their very good, to bad when their bad their really bad...
