Orrville Basketball 2014-15

  • Series62
Orrville scored only 4 points in the 4th quarter, in which the Orrville coach elected to hold the ball run the clock. In my opinion, that is not a good strategy because the team seemed to have lost offensive focus. Throughout the game, Dalton's No. 10 would get open, (poor defense on Orrville's No. 23), and hit jumpers and 3-pointers. It was an entertaining game that Orrville lost more than Dalton won. However, the 4th quarter did jump-start Dalton's confidence which helped them to win.

I truly don't have enough info on that topic but from the looks of things that could be correct. Seems when things get tough the new answer is to quit. I believe that goes to parenting but the argument can be made it is coaching and I will listen. Just at this time that is not what I think.
What's the point of having a team if you can't get the entire, or a good majority of the team to participate in getting better and stronger. True, there are many "useless" parents in our community that aren't actually "parenting". Much time, energy and money is wasted coaching someone that doesn't want to put the work in. If they can't "toe the line" cut him and move on.

I find it interesting that everyone wants to try to determine what has caused this difficult stretch. Please show me an athlete in the past few years that would rival a:

Riffel, Haley, Denson, Zwick, Ray, Reusser, Mosley, Bradley, Burkey, Vaughn, Slaughter, Johnson, Jones, McDonald, Simpson, K. Summers, DeHart, Irby, Stone, McDonald, McDaniel, Bolyard, Wasson, Robinson, Beichler, Simmons, Hiller, Brenner, Weeman, Monheim, Hoobler...yeah I know there are easily a dozen I have missed. We DON'T HAVE THESE ATHLETES walking our halls now people!!!! The cycle will right itself at some point but we simply do not have the athletes right now. We DO have OUTSTANDING leadership right now. These guys would have won with the aforementioned athletes. IMO they would have probably fared even better than the men who were fortunate enough to be at the helm during this great run of athletes coming through OHS. Make no mistake, our time will come again. And I'm sorry, as much as it would be convenient to place the blame upon this new generation's work ethic...there are a few people mentioned here who were not weight room warriors or great practice players. But when Friday night rolled around they were ready to go. They were ATHLETES!

Sounds great and I like the attitude but if that happened right now you would not have enough for a team. Does not make it right just is the truth.

I agree with everything you say here. And yes there are Dozens of other names that could be on that list. We have been blessed over the years.

I also understand that there were plenty of athletes that the lights went on and so did they. There were also plenty that put in the time they needed to do get stronger, faster, better. I am just simply saying that right now you don't have the athletes and they are not working hard on things they can change to get better.

Odds that Orrville wins more PAC Championships in football/basketball in their first 3 years than they did during their entire OCC run?

This is a VERY enlightening post, articulated differently. In the business world it is always easier to find ways to cut spending or make changes when biz is bad but when business is good a LOT of things get overlooked. Probably a lot of truth to that. I also has to be difficult to watch kids not take ownership in the process, at least that is what I hear from some locals..... Probably truth both ways. I have said it before, I just think right now it is the perfect storm.

Lets hope the odds are with us! If not....we can just move to another conference.

I would guess it would be the exact same number for boys. I don't know about the girls...they should compete for titles in basketball right away.

I wonder what our overall record is against each OCC school since we entered the conference? I bet it aint that bad........ We have had some trouble with a couple schools but overall I bet its pretty good.
  • An-Old-Fan
In 11 years in the OCC, my best numbers collected show they are 85-69 in league play.

This post convinces me even more that we will probably never see the level of sustained greatness that Orrville was spoiled with in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s. I have seen bits and pieces of several youth sporting events the past few years in Orrville. Sure there are a few kids here and there who could probably be pretty good players, but I haven't seen anyone even resembling the top names on brow's list. Sometimes these special athletes develop later, but most of the time the players who will be stars surface at an early age. I'm guessing that Orrville will have some good years here and there in the next 15-20 years, but I highly doubt any of their boys programs will turn into the juggernauts they used to be. Kids should be pushed to maximize their potential, but burdening them with unrealistic expectations will only make the situation worse IMO.

I don't know where or how you got that but COOL! What sports is that record in reference to? I was also thinking about sports other than football... Track, basketball, wrestling and of course girls sports.... No question the last couple years have been hard for the boys in the big one (football) but I wonder.....

    Fun Fact:
This was the 6th straight year that the Orrville boys or girls teams played for a district title.

    2010 - Boys won
    2011 - Boys & girls won
2012 - Boys won, girls lost
    2013 - Girls won
    2014 - Boys & girls lost
    2015 - Girls lost

On the girls side, it was their 5th straight district title appearance.

If Chippewa wins tomorrow, it will be the 4th straight year that the Wooster District girls winner has gone on to state.

You have to admit though, since Orrville went to a smaller division, the competition for districts had become noticeably weaker, especially in those first few years. Now, Orrville has diminished to the point of not being able to beat Dalton. Although I feel that defeat was a coaching.

I spoke to a guy that is from Dalton and a huge fan of Dalton. Season ticket holder and never misses a game. He actually said the same thing. I was not there so I can not say if this is true or not but as I said he is from Dalton and not an Orrville fan. He said the second half Orrville coaches tried to slow the game down and he felt that was the changing point in the game. He said Dalton go red hot too...but he could hear the entire second half the coaching staff for Orrville saying slow it down...like I said I don't know but he had no reason to say that we gave the game away and that is what he said.

Actually a lot of athletes still walk the halls at Orrville they just don't play football and who can blame them? The good ones now are on the baseball team and for good reason. Scott Marshall is one hell of a coach. Their weight training program is better than the football team's.

Switching conferences won't fix your football situation until you all come to grips with a change being needed. What it will do for you though is allow you to spend less gas money to see them lose at least those of you on here that actually go to the games!
