DIII Wooster District Tournament

  • OQB
Riders1, Did you mean to say Football is the only sport where they limit the amount of teams in the playoffs and not let everyone in?
  • RedRider1
Unless you want to start quantifying every high school basketball game on some sort of point value like the Harbin point system in football, you have to let everyone in.

    Let everyone in.

Here's Pit's and my predictions for round one.....

We've developed a little scoring system.....
1 point for a correct pick
2 additions points for the correct margin
and 3 additional points for an exact score prediction

Through the Tuesday games, Pit has a 4-2 lead. He came close on the margin of the Chipp/Orr game, missed it by 2 points....and we both picked Triway to win by 13, they won by 14.

Both have Smithville and Norwayne winning tonight, so it will come down to points and margin.

If you eliminated teams by record, we could have been 1 of those teams left out.

The Harbin also includes divisions of defeated teams, though. If we were considering that, we'd account for Orrville having 16 DI & DII opponents (with 5 wins). The most any other team in the district had was Triway with 9 DI & DII opponents, and had 5 wins (Wellington had 9 opponents with 4 wins). Hillsdale had 4 wins against DIV schools. Northwestern had 3. Oberlin had 4. Smithville had 4. Wins against the lower-division opponents, based on the system, could hurt them in a way... but in the end, winning a game is better than losing a game. I think like someone else said, with a 20-game schedule and computing a Harbin-like system across the board, it'd be nearly impossible or have to be incredibly complex. And then someone would have to have EVERY basketball game/score/cancellation accounted for, which I can tell you is mighty difficult just for the 9 leagues I cover.

The same thing goes with baseball, as well - too many games, too many cancellations/postponements, and not enough coaches reporting scores (basketball & baseball). But if the OHSAA creates a full-time position to do this, I might have to consider applying. Haha!

You would make a perfect candidate for the position Pitman.

I dont think they should limit teams.....thats what makes the tourney so much fun....there have been alot of times that teams have made it to columbus with .500 records. Plus i remember in 92 chesapeake was 20 and 0 and ranked #1 and lost its first tournament game!!!
  • riders1
Seems like I remember a lot of Chesapeake teams with excellent records that didn't go very far, and even this season I see some #1 and # 2 seeds have already got beaten around the state. Also remember Northwest a few years ago was 20-0 and we beat them early.

I am in agreement, too, that they should NOT limit teams for basketball (or baseball, either).

4 minutes until tip-off of the Smithville/Wellington game. Here is the WebCast URL:

Typical Smithville this year.... This isn't good if it comes down to the last few possessions. Lost too many of them this year.

Please get out and run, get Drew and Alex in transition!!

    End 3rd:
    Wellington 40
    Smithville 39

Klotzle got his 4th foul very early in the 3rd and took away part of Smithville's game plan. He was in foul trouble most the first half as well. I think it's hurting htem.
  • Mr. Russell
Pit, I sure know defense wasn't in the game plan.

I am gonna be pissed if I don't get to see PIT, RR1, BRF, and OQB this year at the district!
  • thePITman
Best game of the district so far! Wellington and Smithville battling down the stretch. 20 seconds left in 4th, 44-44. Wellington ball. Timeout.

Sad thing is I am not surprised by this. The new coach (who everybody told me to give a chance earlier this year) doesn't know how to teach defense. We have went from the best defensive team in the area statistically to a pathetic, weak and uninspired team that would rather go swimming the day of a game than get in the weight room or gym and get extra shots up. It is no wonder why we lose three games in a row to lesser opponents ending the season, including blowing a game on senior night, only to hurry and go celebrate right after the game instead of maybe being upset. Who cares if Orrville is 8-13 or Wellington has 6 wins, they play with some heart!!!! That comes from the coach and kids actually showing emotion, putting in extra work, and giving a crap!! I said in the summer this program was going down hill. I had no idea it would be this soon. Good luck to the rest of the teams. Maybe I'll come by this weekend and watch a couple teams who give a crap and know how play defense.

    Pit, thanks for the stats.

Orrville and Triway posters, good luck to your teams.
