Suburban Lake League 2009-10

Genoa ChainsLet's talk some basketball!!!

ESP13
Hi there Chains!! I'm glad I found this spot. I'm leaning toward Lake this year mainly because of those players that Coach Meyers has returning. While losing Will, Cox and Lind to graduation will hurt, they have some of the best SLL players returning this season. I look for Abbey, Meyer, and Brittenham to be a solid trio of guards. They are very good ball handlers, solid on defense, and can hit the three ball. The biggest weakness will probably be in the paint.Genoa Chains wrote: Let's talk some basketball!!!
They should also have decent depth. The JV team was 19-1 and a few of those girls will need to fill some big shoes. The Lake team should be a scrappy bunch.
So tell us Chains, how will the Comets fare this year? -
TBone14I think Lake will win the league this year. I am curious as to who will step up into the leadership roles for this team. Obviously Meyer is a great leader and plays with great passion, but I thought that Will was the glue that held everything together for that team last year and the way she played and the other intangibles she brought to the court will be tough to replace. Looking much more forward to watching the Lake girls than the Lake boys team this year.

i also think that Lake is the best girl's team in the Suburban Lakes League this season with all others battling for what's left over.TBone14 wrote: I think Lake will win the league this year. royal_kHave to agree with Lake being the team to beat.

ESP13I had the chance to see the Lake varsity and jv teams play Alumni players last Friday in an exhibition game. It's hard to evaluate too much in this type of game. Guard play is still going to be the Flyer's strength. Height under the boards is going to be a weakness. They will continue to pressure the heck out of every opponent. (And that includes the Alumni!!!) One interesting note...it appears that the Flyers have only 16 or 17 players in the program. The benches could be a little thin.
-
GhmothwdwhsoCan someone move this over to the Girls BB thread. It was started before they split into Boys and Girls. Thanks, just so we don't have the same thread in two places.
-
nmecccWho will win the title? By the coaches vote, it is Lake then everyone else. Otsego will be very good, with Eastwood and Genoa behind them IMO. Thoughts?
-
Swamp FoxEastwood should be fun to watch. They have a young energetic coach and I'm guessing the Eagles will be up and down the floor. I know Coach Briggs, and he is an outstanding person who will do fine in Eagle Country!
-
ESP13Genoa to me is a big question mark. How will they be post-Eli. With Simone off to BGSU, who will bring the ball down the court? Who will be able to slash to the basket and dish the ball? Who will hit the three? IMHO, Genoa was often a one dimensional team and that dimension has moved on. I know this is going to rile up some Comet fans, and that is not my intent, but it is just the impression I had in the games I saw last year.
How strong was the Genoa JV team last year? Do they have some strong players moving up?
Overall, I see the SLL being more competitive this year. Lake may not be quite as strong without the rebounding of Cox, Will, and Lind. Genoa may not be as strong without the overall stellar play of Eli. I see a lot of closer scores than what we saw last year. -
GhmothwdwhsoDid anyone happen to attend? How did Lake look?, and what did other teams look like?
I wanted to go, but couldn't make it. -
Swamp FoxBG, Fostoria, and Eastwood scrimmaged last night. BG looks like they will be better this season. They have some outside shooting and the board work is improving. Several players have extensive experience and things are on the upswing. Fostoria has one very nice player. I don't know her name but her scrimmage number was 43. She is athletic, very aggressive, and makes a huge difference when she is on the floor. Other than her, I didn't think they were overly impressive. Eastwood showed good hustle and occasionally showed moments of cohesion, but it appears that the Eagles are a work in progress and it could be a rebuilding year in Eagle country.

Lake should be very tough this season! Their guard play will be unmatched in the SLL. Look out for Otsego, they have many players back and were good last season. ESP13, who have the Flyers played so far? I know they were in the mega scrimmage at Owens last night, but who else? As for Genoa, they should be alright without Eli. They will miss her scoring, but those coaches will get the other players where they need to be.ESP13 wrote: I had the chance to see the Lake varsity and jv teams play Alumni players last Friday in an exhibition game. Genoa ChainsI agree..Genoa should be ready. You need to remember that we had 2 seiors last year and the rest were sophmores. They needed to play whether they were ready or not. Thus the reason for the O going through Simone. We have 7 juniors and 1 sophmore. We should be fine. Who has Lake scrimmaged thus far?
-
ESP13I don't know who they have scrimmaged. Sorry. If I get some info I'll pass it on.

lhs2ndbaselooks as if most of the sll opens up their respective seasons this weekend. I will more than likely watch Lake/Delta tomorrow as a friend of mine has a daughter on Delta and the Lake girls were hella fun to watch last year. Still would rather go down to Findlay and watch Coldwater/Patrick Henry in the final 4 but weather may send me down the turnpike. Good luck to all the SLL teams
-
doggydeelhs, what happened that Lake didn't beat Delta by more? I didn't expect anything out of Delta this year.

Swamp FoxElmwood travels to Bowling Green this evening and somebody will get their first victory of the young season tonight. BG won last year's game and I'm sure Elmwood is looking to get a little bit of revenge. the Bobcats will be trying to establish some momentum going into this weekend's NLL opener against Springfield. It should be a fun game to watch.
-
GhmothwdwhsoLake with a convincing win tonight over Northwood 71-18. What did the other SLL teams do tonight?
-
Swamp FoxIt was Bowling Green 55 Elmwood 50. The Bobcats led almost the whole way and had a couple of double digit leads but Elmwood hung around due to too many Bowling Green turnovers and some impressive outside shooting from the Royals that kept it interesting most of the way. BG was led by Hayley Williford, who had 29 on an array of outside shots. I would say that both of these teams are better than a year ago and can at the very least play spoiler to the teams that have been predicted to finish higher. BG is now 1-1, while Elmwood drops to 0-2. the BG Jayvees claimed a 49-22 victory. BG's varsity will have to cut down on their turnovers, but there were some signs of improvement since their game 1 performance. Friday BG hosts Springfield. Reynolds had 20 for the Royals and there are a lot of things to like about Elmwood this season. They battled hard and refused to be blown out. They fought back time and time again and made it a nail-biter at the end. A very entertaining, albeit sloppy game.

LetsGoCometsGenoa won 42-39 over Oak Harbor. I think that was the score. Wasn't there to watch but I guess it was close the whole game. Also have no idea how good of a team Oak Harbor is supposed to be either.
-
gravediggerOak Harbor is pick 5th in the SBC coaches poll . But they do return 4 starters from last year and
Coach Heller always has them girls ready to play . I think that is a good win for Genoa. -

I think this game is the result primarily of inexperience vs. experience, Size vs. less size and an inability to run a consistent offense against a tough defensive team. Eastwood will come along, but it will take some time. Patience will be necessary with the Eagles in the early season.gravedigger wrote: Genoa.................58*
