I expect this years game at Hiland to be competitive. Benedictine will be in a different atmosphere than they are used to so that could help a little. Hiland will not have a height advantage. Benedictine will have at least two players 6'-6" to 6"-8" on the floor at one time. Hiland is not going to be able to get rebound solely based on their height and athletic ability. Hiland is going to have to box out or they will not win the battle on the boards.

They are going to have to get better at their half court offense. Hiland's guards need to penetrate to draw the defense and dish to the open man. Hiland's guards need to get better at getting the ball into the post.

Wes are going? Not as far to drive this year. Plus they are not clearing the gym so you can catch the early game as well. Toledo St. Francis DeSales vs Massillon Perry.

That coment you made about the battle on the boards....after watching Garaway manhandle Hiland on the boards, I would think anyone with a little heart can battle with hiland on the boards....remember Garaway isn't considered a real big team, even though we know they have some size to them, but they took Hiland to the woodshed, that issue about heart and desire keeps coming back again and again !!

You do have to wonder if Hiland thought that they could pretty much show up and win...I mean a lot of people are telling this team how good they are. That loss to Garaway may be a blessing in disguise.

Who is the playmaker for Hiland? I know Dylan and Seger are great players, and get a lot of praise. But who for the Hawks makes plays for the other guys, gets guys open shots, will take the charge, or get the big rebound when it is needed in the fourth quarter?

I would say that player is Noah Boyd...at least on the rebounding and taking a charge part of it. I haven't seen them yet this year, so I am not sure about the playmaker part of it...but last year, their offense was very stagnant at times because Dylan was doing a lot of one on one/dribbling out top.

That is what I was worried about ^^. It is tough to beat solid defensively sound teams when the ball stops often. I am sure they are working on this, but it is easier said than done. And sometimes the most talented scorers out there can't get others open shots, as well as they can get their own.

Still it's hard to see any DIV teams in the district playing with Hiland, and few in the region either. I would be very surprised to see anyone keep them from a trip to Columbus in DIV.

I think they (Hawks) are still a work in progress, and perhaps coach is still finding what THAT guy is, i.e. THE guy to get done what needs to be done. Probably looking at Dylan to be a little more creative and getting his teammates involved more than previously, and he's been doing that more this year. But there are sveral guys that have the potential to be more involved and that's what needs to be figured out. We know we want to be peaking in March and not in December, so we have some time to do it. I think too the potential to make a long tournamnet run is there; we'll see if theycan get it done.
But garaway is a very good team, and I think they'll make some noise in D III as well. Losing to a team lkie them is not the worst thing in the world

I agree. Back when I played our tallest player stood at 6'2". That player holds the record for rebounds in a single game at Hiland (26). Back then we knew we had a height disadvantage going into most games. Because of this we were taught as soon as the ball was shot to get a butt in the gut and box out. We got rebounds with fundamentals and heart.

This years team has four players between 6'5" and 6'7". Hiland's point guard is 6'5". They have two player that were DIV 1st and 2nd team all Ohio. The mental aspect of basketball can never be overlooked. With this size naturally the brain sees dominance. Especially on the boards. Kids even more so. My point being with this size naturally the kids will expect the "gift" of rebounds falling into their hands and possibly neglect some of the fundamentals of boxing out and personally hustling to get the ball.

Garaway's shellacking of Hiland on the boards 31-14 should be an example. Though you have height and athletic ability rebounds are not a gift, you still need to box out and play fundamentally sound and work to get them. Had Hiland grabbed just five of Garaway's 31 they likely win the game. Hopefully it is a lesson learned.

^^Did the big kid from Garaway pretty much control the glass? He is a very solid player when he has someone to get him the ball in his spots.

Honigford had 12 of Garaway's 31 rebounds. So yes I would say he definitely had control of the glass.

I saw TCC got the win over Tusky Valley 48-41. Tusky Valley had just knocked off Garaway a couple of weeks ago. Sweets knee seems to be healing up well as he led the way with 16. Got to be ready to play every game.

So let's see: TV beats Garaway by , what, 7? TCC beats TV by7, Hiland beats TCC by 40...so on paper that makes Hiland 54 points better than Garaway. So how did Hiland lose by 2??? :)

Standings at the beginning of the new year.

    Garaway (4-0) 6-1
    Hiland (4-1) 7-1
    Ridgewood (3-1) 6-1
    Malvern (3-2) 6-2
    Conotton Valley (2-2) 5-2
    Tuscarawas Central Catholic (2-3) 4-3
    Sandy Valley (1-3) 1-5
    Strasburg (1-4) 2-5
    Newcomerstown (0-4) 1-5

I could not find the result of the Sandy Valley vs Kidron Central Christian game.

Of the top six only Garaway has lost a game outside of the IVC.

what are the thoughts of Indian Valley applying for admission to IVC?
  • majorspark
East Canton has applied as well. East Canton has established rivalries with Malvern and Sandy Valley.

Indian Valley has historical ties to the IVC. They have not found a true home outside of the IVC since consolidation.

Indian Valley is NOT going to happen...............end of story.

I tend to agree. You seem pretty sure of yourself though. I know some IVC members seem to think Indian Valley is too big to fit back into the IVC. Size does not always matter when it comes to performing on the hardwood or the field and getting the win. Traditionally and competitively they would be a good fit. I would not be against seeing them back.

I have heard some rumors of attempting a greater expansion into two divisions with this opportunity. Highly unlikely that this would come together. But is remotely possible. I would be in favor of it. If set up right.

Personally I thought Tusarawas Valley would have been the best fit. Geographically they fit in perfectly. Size wise they match with Sandy Valley. Several IVC teams are on their schedule each year (on the basketball side). They were also briefly members of the IVC many moons ago. I don't believe they are interested.

My money though is on East Canton. A long haul for and to Necomerstown and Ridgewood. But overall a they would be a welcomed addition.

I hear Wes is feverishly lobbying Harrison Central to apply so he can strengthen his ties to the IVC.

Any one have the IVC standings?
  • Pariah
Garaway has no losses in conference. I believe Hiland, RW and CV have one loss. Everyone else has at least 2. Malvern is struggling right now with, I think, 3 IVC losses already.

    Mr. Russ,
I think Jalen Miller is the type of player you described. Does whatever needs to be done and plays his tail off.
