2010-2011 Inter Valley Conference

Weird that I am not a Hiland alum and was at both of those games.......anyhow, I will take the Lakeland/Hiland 93 district final over theses games for obvious reasons!!!
  • Pariah
Funny... I can't remember that game at all. Pretty sure you are misremembering, Wes.

haha....The atmosphere and hype for that game was awesome....only rivaled by the Hiland/Rosecrans game where Bills and Whiteman went crazy.

    Hiland outscores TCC tonite 82-42.
    Any other scores?

I heard on the radio on the way home Ridgewood over Newcomerstown. I believe it was 62-36?

Sounded like Ridgewood shot the ball well and also from long range. I believe they finished the game with a 50 something shooting percentage from the floor. I think the Ellis had 18? if my memory serves me correct.

Ridgewood is off to a great start. Should be a good one when Hiland comes to town on Friday.

    Malvern 80
    Sandy Valley 41

    Conotton Valley 75
Strasburg 73 3OT Brandon Bailey with 36 pts.
  • majorspark
    Tuscarawas Valley 51
    Garaway 42

This one surprised me. Tusky Valley remains undefeated at 3-0.

I think the idea that the IVC is a strong conference, top to bottom, is proving to be true. It appears to me that Strasburg, NCT, SV, and TCC will struggle against the better teams, with CV and RW able to rise up on a given night and beat the top teams, and that Garaway, Malvern, and Hiland are the cream.
  • majorspark
    Garaway 59
    Malvern 48

    Hiland 57
    Ridgewood 48

    Strasburg 47
    Newcomerstown 42

    Conotton Valley 77
TCC 66 It appears CV will be exiting the IVC in style. My preseason prediction of them finishing in the basement may have been wrong.

CV's Bailey is a beast as only a soph. One of the better bigs in the conference already. They will be a tough out for anyone.
Garaway is showing they and Hiland seem to be the elite so far. Big game In Sugarcreek next week. Looks like Garaway is getting production from a lot of spots.
Malvern is one half notch below now, but expect them to put it together and the Hiland and Garaway games at their place could be completely different.
Hiland had trouble (again) with Ridgewood at Ridgewood. Ridgewood has a nice team, but something about the place seems to bring out the worst in Hiland.Poor shooting, poor passing. Not an overall good game by Hiland IMO.
Seger had a great game and bailed us out.

I love the IVC, but what has happened to teams that get out of this region has been brutal and we have been exposed for the last 10 or so years. I am hoping that it really turns around and we can compete with the western half of the state soon!
  • Mr. Russell
Is the Hiland Garaway game a sellout? And if not, when would you recommend getting there for some tickets? We are hoping to come from Smithville and have never been to the gym.
  • majorspark
Hiland sold out of its presale alotment of tickets. In past years Garaway has had some tickets available to sell in their general asmission section at the door at some pretty big games. But if you are going to make the trip from Smithville I would get there prior to the start of the reserve game. If you don't want to watch the reserve game you can get a quick bite to eat, but seating will become limited by halftime of the reserve game. It will likely sell out. To be safe I would give Garaway a call tomorrow afternoon before you decide to head out.
  • Mr. Russell
    Thank you majorspark!
  • majorspark
    Garaway 51
    Hiland 49

Hiland was out hustled, out rebounded, and out played. Garaway's defense was solid. Teams will be bringing their A-game this year against the Hawks. They need to figure out how to handle it.
  • riders1
Agreed, wouldn't have thought a 21-10 lead would be Garaway's, but they did jump on the Hawks early. The 2nd half start was what you would expect from the Hawks, but the Pirates didn't fall apart and put a great team effort into the fine 4th quarter. Great win for the Pirates.

When Hiland won the state championship back in 92 they dropped one to a formidable IVC foe at Lakeland. For many of the same reasons. They learned from that loss and proceeded to win the rest of their IVC games. Including downing Lakeland in the tourney. Their only other set back was to Orville (who also won a state championship that year). Hiland lost by I believe 3 to Orville at a game played at New Phila.

Hiland and Lakeland shared the title at 15-1 that year in the IVC. The IVC is more balanced this year than back in 92. Malvern and Ridgewood are in the mix and have the talent to defeat both Hiland and Garaway. With this win Garaway has earned the early season pole position. Time will tell how Hiland adjusts to this loss. With Canton Glen Oak and Cleveland Benedictine as their next two opponents the better make quick adjustments.

I thought Garaway played very well. Hiland played well at spots, but not consistently enough to get the win. Seemed garaway just wanted the ball more when it came to rebounding, and that was the difference in the game IMO. That and some defensive breakdowns in the 4th qtr, when Hiland gave up 20 points.
But agree with the major: Hiland used a similar loss to get better back in 92, and can hopefully use this to help them get to the next level where they need/want to be. As Shutt mentioned in the paper, these games hopefully make both teams better. The two next games for Hiland will be very good teams as well, and will help them get better. Not inconceivable that Hiland could sit at 4-3 in another week. Congrats to Garaway; thought they had Hiland scouted pretty well, and played to Hiland's weaknesses. They will be a tough out for anybody down the road if they continue to improve as well.
No other huge surprises in the IVC last night; except maybe the Sandy valley/CV game. SV picks up their first conf win over an improved CV team.

Do you believe the Benedictine game will be another blowout? I made the trip up to Cleveland last year for that one...very ugly. Got some good krispy kreme donuts on the way out the door though..lol
  • ricola
^^ sure hope it's not wes! And you won't even have Krispy Kremes to buy on the way out if it is. (Tho you can get a Trail & Swiss at the concession stand).
  • wes_mantooth
Love Trail & Swiss....anyhow, Benedictine was so athletic, but had zero shooters on that team. They pretty much just threw it up on the glass and went after it. I might be wrong, but I was thinking that they were mostly seniors last year, so who knows what this year will bring.

I was surprised at the crowd that Hiland brought to the sketchy part of town in Cleveland...shows how much the fans love Hiland bball.
  • ricola
true, but if you remember, they shot very well that night. The scouting report said they were bricklayers, but their shooting percentage that night wassn't all that bad. add to that their athleticism and it was a long night for the hawks. I know they graduated a couple of DI signees, so you would think they would be down at least a little, but from what I've heard/read they still have a very good team back. I remember a rather talented soph last year that played on their jv( don't remember the name) who i would imagine might be a very nice player this year on varsity.
Hiland has always had a faithful following...I recall a full gym at Wehrle some years ago as well, which wasn't exactly in Upper Arlington either. Not much else to do in Holmes County I guess.

No I do not. As mentioned Benedictine lost several of their top players from last year. One of them was the one that did the most damage to Hiland last year. I expect this years game at Hiland to be competitive. Benedictine will be in a different atmosphere than they are used to so that could help a little. Hiland will not have a height advantage. Benedictine will have at least two players 6'-6" to 6"-8" on the floor at one time. Hiland is not going to be able to get rebound solely based on their height and athletic ability. Hiland is going to have to box out or they will not win the battle on the boards.

They are going to have to get better at their half court offense. Hiland's guards need to penetrate to draw the defense and dish to the open man. Hiland's guards need to get better at getting the ball into the post.

Wes are going? Not as far to drive this year. Plus they are not clearing the gym so you can catch the early game as well. Toledo St. Francis DeSales vs Massillon Perry.

I am thinking about it...if I can get someone to head up with me.

These "measure stick" types of games always interest me.

Not to mention the "trail n swiss" sandwich statement may have put it over the top...lol
