Some group had a bunch of rescued and apparently rehabilitated pit bulls on Ohio State's campus a couple months back. I started giving the girl in charge a hard time regarding all of the stereotypes surrounding the breed. She seemed offended and adamantly persisted that those stereotypes were not true and they were very loving, gentle creatures. Sure enough, as soon as I reached down to pet the dog it violently bit my right arm. Although I was bleeding badly, I did not require stitches.

Now I love animals - specifically dogs - as much, if not more, than the next guy. But you best believe I smacked the shit out of that dog right in front of everybody there before walking out. Bitch was lucky she didn't get a lawsuit but I couldn't help but laugh at the mortified look on her face.

Wow, I am just shocked that a dog that didn't know you felt threatened when you reached towards it. What a surprise!

Yes. Why would anyone ever pet a dog?

You do have to be careful around any strange dog, and let him acclimate to you. But let's not pretend all dogs will bite your arm off for trying to pet them. None of the dogs I have ever had would do that.

I'm guessing most of your dogs weren't rescues that had probably been abused in the past. Let's not try to compare an abused animal that has been rescued to your pets that have most likely been loved their entire existence.

Barry even admits at first he was giving the girl a hard time about the stereotypes. I'm willing to bet he was giving off a threatening vibe that the dog sensed. Idiot for just reaching to pet the dog instead of allowing it to get familiar with him first. Dog 101

One was a rescue, but neglect not abuse. And it was a Golden Retriever. ;) Two others have been from the pound.

I'll give you this one. But when a girl argues with you about the stereotype, then the dog bites you...

This is still going on? Dogs are what the owners make them. I have owned a pit and never had a problem with him. I know the owners have a brother of the one I had and he had to be put down. They made the dog mean and it showed. He would bite anyone. To me its an owner thing and always will be.

Owners are to blame. But not solely.

Must have a poor stupid owner that took the pic. look how aggressive they are in that photo. Probably Vick's dogs.

Hard to judge their aggressiveness with no humans in the picture. This isn't about dog-on-dog violence. ;)

I have had and raised dogs since I was very young so I know how to approach animals that are unfamiliar with me. Knowing the stereotypes and history of these particular pit bulls, I hardly dove in "hand first" when reaching to pet it. It was more the fact that this girl was obnoxiously adamant about her relationship with these animals and that every negative connotation associated with pit bulls was a complete misconception.

So one picture from the internet deems them all safe?
