$2000. My stepdad paid for my car and I am paying him back. $340 or more each month.

    $0.

$0! They did pay for college but it was only two years, and considering what they paid for my sister to go to college for 5.5 years they got off easy with me!

$0 and I hope I never have to. I borrowed about $100 from mom when I was in college and you would've thought it was $10G the way she brought up every chance she could about how she helped me. After about 7 years I finally had to remind her that I paid her back 7 years ago and I wasn't going to thank her for it any more. That experience and also watching how she treated my siblings when they borrowed money from her has caused me to swear to never borrow money from her.

What do you mean? She tried to guilt you into doing stuff for her because of the money she loaned you?

I've never borrowed money from my parents. I stopped getting supported by them when I turned 18 (I didn't want them to, they certainly would if I needed help). I have always been self-reliant. Joined the military to help pay for college and I've been financially stable and comfortable for awhile now.

I owed my parents more (in love and money) than I ever could have paid back.

    I miss them very much.

Now my dad is a different story. I asked him to borrow 1000 for college books and such and he quoted me a 8.8% interest rate lol and said I had 6 months to pay him back. He ain't hurting for money either.
My question is how much money do you owe your parent/s?
Sorry to here about your Mother,it sounds like she was generous, but your Dad is teaching you about life.

He ain't hurting for money either. This comment concerns me. What have you done to earn the money that he has?

I didn't read beyond the original post, so I hope I'm not repeating.

Actually, this is a more accurate answer for me as well.
    Perfect.

No money can equate to the experience/things that they have provided me.

I think its one of the hardest things to do is get your finances in order.
Only if you get out of control to begin with. I have never found it hard to spend within my own limits.

    Yes. It was unbelievable.

I owe my parents a lot of things, including money. I've only actually asked once, and that's been repaid. They offer...actually insist on paying for many things. My parents are great and I cherish every moment I have with them. I try to repay my dad with little things, like an annual trip to Wrigley, but I will never be able to repay my parents for everything they are owed.

It's funny to me that anyone would criticize someone for borrowing money from their parents without knowing any of the details. Every situation is different and every family is different. I don't feel bad or guilty about the money I owe my parents. They decided to help me out...they didn't have to do it. I am thankful they did and am paying them back just as I said I would.

My parents and my wife parents are gone. We never borrowed money from them however they both provide some funds when things were not going well early in our married and getting started.
We bought our first home (fixer -upper property) my wife father ….. sent us $4000.00, when we sold it two years later we sent him $4000.00 back…..that Christmas he gave it back to us a gift.

As a parent of 3 daughters, 4 grand kids ……….We stopped counting a long time ago.
All we ask is for them to be the best parents possible, best provide as possible and that is payment in full.

I don't owe them anything. But when I get out of school and find a steady job I'm gonna make sure they live comfortably until they pass away. It's the least I could do after all they've done for me over the years.

I owe my mother a whole lot more than money. I think my dad and I are pretty even.
  • McFly1955
$0 for me, never have borrowed from them.
  • Laley23
Well, technically a lot. But it was always assumed they were paying for the stuff that they have.

-Mostly college, but also my first car and a few trips I took before I had a job. As soon as I have enough stored away I will stop asking my father to pay the student loans, as it stands, he is still paying me back every month for them.

My dad said I don't owe him anything for my college, so in that case $0

If I did, that would suck, lol.
