Is MMA barbaric?

    Time after time I hear the sports writers on Around the Horn and Pardon The Interruption say they can't get into MMA because it's too barbaric. I think it's nonsense but that's just me. What do you guys think?

    Bitter boxing fans or misguided parent groups are the only people who would say MMA is barbaric.

    To be honest, I think it's a little barbaric. I don't push for getting rid of it, and I don't care if people watch it. But it's a little too gladiator-esque for my tastes.

    I would say definitely not. My Pastor repeatedly tells me it's legalized street fighting (used to call it cockfighting when not in church).

    I just can't get into it because of the arrogance that many of the fans have about it, everyone thinks they can shave their head and get a few sweet tatoos and wear really tight graphic t's and all of a sudden they're Billy Bad Ass and ready to step into the Octogon

    Do you realize that he was trained for over a year by MMA trainers before ever fighting? If he would of just started fighting in the octogon wthout training he wouldnt of won.

    I thought he was being serious. Like when Kimbo got knocked out in 10 seconds by some random guy with pink hair, filling in for Ken Shamrock.

    i would say by definition it is sort of barbaric. all they are using are fists and their feet. no gloves like boxing or anything else.

    Not at all. You want to see the barbaric turn into the earlier UFC (1, 2, 3, and so on) We just watched a UFC special the other night on Royce Gracie. It was pretty wild back then with less rules, no weight classes, and tournament style bouts. In fact The Wife didn't want to watch it until she found out it was the older bouts she hadn't seen. She said it was cool, compaired to the regulated style that it is now.

    Want kinda barbaric...check out XARM. I guess XARM is more brutial than barbaric.

    I hate people that where Affliction shirts and don't know anything about MMA. I wear a Hitman fight gear and 2 tapout shirts only when I watch a fight.

    I agree. Maybe I'm not much of a guy, but I don't get the appeal of watching two people beat the shit out of each other. Same reason I don't like boxing.

    If MMA is barbaric, then boxing and football are too. Both sports are more likely to result in serious injuries/death than MMA.

    People that think so don't understand the sport at all. Was it barbaric in the beginning, yes but the rules and regulations have made it a legit major sport. Football and boxing produce more serious injuries!

    Also people that wear those shirts aren't all douches and guidos. Some of us are big fans, so no different than wearing your favorite team shirts.

    People who say it is barbaric have never really taken the time to study or learn the sport. Like many have mentioned, there are far fewer serious injuries in MMA than Football or Boxing. The Refs usually do a great job of stopping the fight when someone can't defend themselves and most people will tap out before getting a limb snapped or passing out.

    A lot of those guys are upset that boxing is becoming irrelevant. Beside Manny and Floyd, Boxing can't draw and no one cares about it. I am huge boxing fan also but MMA is the future of combat sport.

    As for the Affliction style shirts, I am no guido and I am pretty confident in saying I am not a Dbag either. When I go out to watch Football games, I see just as many dbags wearing Browns/Bengals/Steelers etc jerseys as I do when I go watch a UFC fight and see people in those types of shirts.

    Just because something requires skill or technique does not mean it is not barbaric. I am sure it would require some skill to kill another man in a sword fight, but it would still be barbaric. I have watched MMA in bars and from my experience the things the fans enjoy most of are guys getting knocked out cold and the blood. It is barbaric and that is why alot of fans people like it.

    MMA is the definition of barbaric. That doesn't make it bad though. Humans love barbaric sporting events and have throughout history. There is nothing wrong with that.

    Like someone else said, watch the early UFC's and you can tell the difference.. Pride still allows some pretty crazy stuff so it could be worse.
