Do You Hate Referees?

Because the coach does. But the coach isn't allowed to yell at the ref. So I do.ernest_t_bass wrote:
I will agree with that, definitely. Do they deserve to get screamed at? Why don't fans scream at the kids when they screw up?wes_mantooth wrote: nope, but officials have off nights just like the kids playing in the games. -
BRFI can't stand the ref who tries to be "the show" in a game. The best refs are the ones that you don't remember much about from the game. I think the "showboats" are frustrated athletes that need to "swallow the pea".

CinciX12I'm brutal to college referees. Yell absolutely terrible things about them like I hope you tear your ACL, I tell Higgins frequently that I hope he goes into a fib and dies in front of me, etc. You know family stuff.
But then I go out and ref high school games and let the high schoolers yell the same stuff at me.
I'm not a hypocrite after all -

I'm not going to disagree with this either. Many men (with inflated self opinions) out there officiating.osu99 wrote: I officiated hoops for 8 years and can tell you there are a lot of douches calling games that are unlikable people. -

Im almost positive it has to do with the combination of injuries and possibly breaking the apparatus.wildcats20 wrote: Laley or anyone...
Can you explain to me the no dunking in warm ups rule?? I mean obviously you can't touch the rim, but why is it in place??
Obviously in games, you cant regulate what a player wants to attempt, but in warm-ups you can, so they (OHSAA) do. I HAVE seen 2 kids seriously injured trying to dunk when they can (but not easily). This could easily happen in warm-ups if it is allowed.
Someone correct me if Im wrong, but Im pretty sure I remember that being the reason (I did take the class in August though...)
This is exactly the reason. -

Home court advantage! That's like having 6 men on the floor!wildcats20 wrote: The one thing about that I don't like is it is clearly an advantage for the home team. They practice on it everyday and then the visiting comes in once a year and has to adjust to it. -

Really? I beg to differ.I Wear Pants wrote:

Honestly, the yelling doesn't bother me. It just means the fans are into the game. What bothers me is how over the top some fans can be. Holler at me all you want, but to stand up, red in the face, while coming unglued... not so much.BRF wrote:ernest_t: fold your rabbit ears down! -
Con_AlmaI don't hate referees.
-
queencitybuckeyeI don't get upset over things I can't or am unwilling to change. I have no interest in becoming an official, so I won't be critical of those who have chosen to get involved.

royal_kTrue story....I was sitting 1st row center court at a HS game this year. During a TO, one of the refs was standing in front of me. There were, IMO, several questionable calls. I simply asked the official, not in a bad tone, if he was having an off night. He turned around and held out the ball, asking me if I wanted to take his place. Gotta admit, I thought it was funny. He also reminded me my team was winning.

Similar story: I did the same thing as royal_k, only I was an assistant coach. The "storied" ref, took off his whistle, and started to hand it to me, then he threatened me with a "T" if I bothered him again.royal_k wrote: True story....I was sitting 1st row center court at a HS game this year. ernest_t_bassI've asked that to fans before... if they wanted my place.

Laley23Royal K, I cant see a situation where ANY tone asking the ref if he is having an off night would go over well with him...even if he knew he was.
Here is a story from last week, I thought it was hilarious. Team A committed an over and back violation. Fan of Team A was livid because he thought I got the call wrong. During an inbounds I was in front of him and he explained what happened, exactly. I said, I know, I saw all of that as well. He goes: So you missed the call? I said, Nope....I just know the rules.
He didnt bother me the rest of the game. -
supermanWhen coaches screw up, they hear it from the administration.
When players screw up they hear it from the coach.
When refs screw up, they don't want to hear it from anyone. For the most part, they are small men with big egos. -
mtrulzLast night, we had the worst refs ever. They were all old, crippled, and blind. They made the stupidest calls, I was yelling, "Christ!" the whole game. We didn't win, but I had 30 points.
-
royal_k^^^^your 30 pts mean nothing when your team loses.
-
mtrulz^^True. I've done better.

Not ALL refs. If I screw up, and a coach is respectful towards me, I will admit it. If the coach does nothing but scream at me, why should I go over and say, "Sorry coach, I missed that. Please stop yelling." When you give respect, you get respect. Yes, that's a two way street.superman wrote: When coaches screw up, they hear it from the administration.

THE4RINGZI don't hate referees, they are just part of the game.
I coached small college basket ball for a few years, and you got to know some officals. Some you liked working your games, some you didn't.
As a fan now, I don't really talk to or about te officials too much. Maybe every once in awhile, but it has to be an absolutely unbelievable call for me to get fired up at a game any more. -
DarkonI didn't hate ref's until I found out they let ernest in the club.LOL Just kidding.
I have to agree that calling a game with poor teams would be tougher than with quality teams.
I make comments here and there. But I never make it personal. Usualy I give them the "You missed That one".
Tough job that I don't understand why some would want to do it. You will always get ragged on.
Hats off to those that do it. -

Who was playing? Some teams have very respectful fan bases and some have fans that yell about the most obvious travel in the world.ernest_t_bass wrote: Before I start, I'm a basketball official, and a damn good one! I just got back from a game tonight, and it was ugly basketball. Ugly basketball isn't easy to officiate, but we did a good job. In ugly games, with ugly teams, NO ONE likes the officials.
My question to you... When you go to a game (any sport) do you yell at the officials like maniacs, or do you keep quiet? I never understood the idiots in the stands that scream at the top of their lungs at officials. -
ernest_t_bassEdon at Edgerton. NW Ohio basketball.

darbypitcher22I normally try to stay pretty calm. I managed to do so while coaching this summer on a number of occasions when I could have lost it.
I realize that officials are human too and are trying todo the best that they can. Its not always a missed call here or there that will upset me, its more about a guy who doesn't hustle to get into position or is out of position clearly to see a call, or one that grossly misinterprets a rule. Those are what frustrate me the most -
Laley23Darby, I cant stand officials who are lazy. I am an assistant coach for my dads 8th grade team. He doesnt yell at refs at all, but will tell them "Show me you deserve to move up to the HS level" or "You know youre getting paid to do this"
I pride myself on being in the "best possible" position to make calls.
What gets to me is when a coach tells me Im out of position (which I was), but it was due to the fact the play went in an unnatural direction. As a ref, I have to anticipate where the play is going to get into position to begin with. 98% of the time you are right, but when youre not you get caught (technically) out of position even though you really werent.
