Pet Peeves of Interstate/Freeway Driving

• NOL fan
I'll start with a couple of mine:

- People who can't pick a speed. Say you have your cruise set, and you pass a car. Then they speed up and pass you. Then they slow down and you have to pass them again. Then they pass you again (and so on)

- Semis and or any other vehicles that take forever to pass, blocking the left lane forever, especially this scenario: semi A is going 64.3 MPH wants to pass Semi B who is going 64.1 MPH...and at those speeds remain the same during the entire duration of the pass
• FanOfCats
those using the PASS lane for slow driving. Left lane is for PASSING, NOT driving

those who can't figure out to stop running up on people's bumpers so they constantly hit their breaks, accelerate, hit their breaks, accelerate, hit their brakes....

Truckers who can't drive! More and More of those these days. Used to be that the BEST drivers were truckers.... not the case anymore

if you aren't currently passing a car, you should not be in the left lane. regardless of if there is anyone behind you or not.

the people who vary speeds are indeed very annoying.
• Swamp Fox
I would second the driver who changes speeds. He passes, slows down, you pass, he speeds around you etc. etc. etc.. I also agree with the tailgaters. I can't stand the guy who sits on your bumper and never leaves.
• noreply66
The guy that is behind you and passes you to take the same exit ramp as you.
• Cat Food Flambe'
The guy who passes you on the left, then suddenly dives across your front bumper so that he doesn't miss his exit - when there was a quarter mile of clear lane behind you.
• 2kool4skool
Tailgating. If I'm going 10+ over you better not be on my tail or I'm break checking you.

Those two are the general culprits of my rage.

Also when you're coming up on somebody in front of you who is driving slow, and when you get ready to pass them... you notice that somebody is hovering on your back quarter panel. They won't slow down and they won't speed up. Are just at the right place that they can't see your blinker on.

Adding to that is when you're going up a short on-ramp to the highway, and somebody coming towards you doesn't get over in the left lane to let you on ...when there is nobody close to them that prevents it.

For all those people who are guilty of all of the above, I'd loooooooove to pour liquid draino in your eyes, beat chopsticks into your ears, make you swallow bleach and cut your fingers off with hedge clippers.

Ok, not really, but it does cross my mind! ;)

I hate people that drive the speed limit or slower in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway. If you aren't gonna drive with the big boys get in the right lane. If I pass you in the right lane you should get off of the highway and never drive again. Also, when the ground is snowy (this is for people in NC) the worst thing you can do is be going 55, get scared, and put your brakes on. That i why people get in wrecks moron. Let your foot off of the accelerator but do not hit your brakes!

another annoying thing is when you are in the left lane approaching a semi that you are about to pass that's in the right lane....and someone else comes up and passes you on the right like they are going to try and cut you off through the ever narrowing gap between you and the semi. Most of the time they have to fall back, which leads to them tailgating you around the semi then flying by as soon as you get over. But sometimes the bastard actually cuts you off, which nearly cause a wreck

another similar thing is the same situation, only there are a bunch of cars in front of you also in the left lane, completely blocking any chance they have of getting in. I end up thinking "where the hell do you think you're going?" and then laugh when they have to fall back and join the line with everyone else

1)People who hang out in the left lane and make you pass them on the right.....I've seen people hanging there and 10 or 12 cars will pass them on the right and they just continue to plod along. How the f@#$ did they get a license?

2) People who are oblivious to theri driving because they are talking/texting on their phone.

I'd say this is true except if you are going faster than the rest of the traffic and there isn't a lot of room on the right lane. So if you did move over you'd only be in the right lane for ten seconds before having to switch again.

^ that, or if the freeway is pretty much packed and there are just as many cars in each lane

had this happen today on my way back to school, was getting on the highway and this dumb b*(# stayed in the lane that i was trying to merge onto when there was NOBODY in the lane next to her. I nearly went down the exit ramp. I passed her and gave her and her mother the free bird.

The best part about this thread is everyone that has complained about something has probably done that very thing a couple times in their life.

Nothing bothers me while I'm driving, and if I see someone doing something stupid, I just laugh and move on.

In Ohio its really only a suggestion to keep faster traffic in the left lane and it's also perfectly legal to pass on the right.

i almost went nuts one time i was cruising along at night doing 65mph in the left lane(i drive there to give me more time to spot deer around this time of year) and the only other car on my side was a guy coming up behind me. once he got behind me he started flashing his lights at me. so i figured maybe he was a trooper or something and was trying to use an upcoming U turn or something. so i move over and the guy passes me and its some guy from PA just speeding along. i would be lying if i didnt want to catch up to him and push him off the road....but i digress.

My biggest pet peeve is the people who cant maintain speed. for the most part i use cruise and its funny watching +/- 10mph changes in people when they drive. most of the time they are on a cell phone.

Another one is when i am about to pass a vehicle or in the middle of passing one and someone comes up behind me going about 10-15 mph faster and expects me to speed up just because they are going fast.

i have seen some other funny things like having a guy pass me on the left only to immediately get back infront of me with barely a half car length in space. the only problem was there was no exit ramp coming up and no other traffic, it was like 3am.

That's really only a Columbus thing. I tell you I hardly ever saw it in Northwest Ohio. I see people do this at least 3 times a week in Columbus, which just proves the point that Columbus drivers totally suck and are the worst in Ohio.

that's because most truck drivers are now foreigners, mostly somalians

...one of my pet peeves is when people come down an on ramp and EXPECT you to move over when they have a YIELD sign at the end of their on ramp. I've had people flip me off when I'm in the right lane and someone is passing me and this dick head will come down the on ramp and actually have to OBEY the law by yielding to on coming traffic and act like it's my fault!
• gorocks99
People that don't know how to merge (i.e. getting up to match speed of the highway traffic). Bugs the hell out of me and it's borderline dangerous, too.
• krambman
People who drive in the passing lane. It's fine to get over into the middle or far left lane to pass someone, but you should never get passed on the right. If someone passes you on the right, you need to get over. When I lived in Illinois the left lane was for passing only, it was illegal to drive in the left lane. It's extemely dangerous to pass on the right, which is why it's about the only thing you'll be ticketed for on the autobahn on Germany.

Semi trucks who pass me when I'm already doing 5 miles over the speed limit. If I'm technically speeding then a semi shouldn't be passing me.

People who speed up behind me when I'm passing another car or semi truck. I'm already going over the speed limit and passing a slower car. I'm not instantly going to speed up more because you're in a hurry. I can't get out of your way any quicker. If anything, I'll probably slow down a bit. I also then hate it when those people get over so quick to go around me after passing said vehicle before I've had a chance to move over a lane.

People who don't use their turn signal. If you're going to change lane use your signal!

how is it any more dangerous than passing on the left? its only more dangerous because the person being overtaken isnt paying attention. either way the action itself is still the same. and there is a reason why you have to drive right on the autobahn, everyone is driving different speeds. in the US, everyone should be going the same speed or within a few mph of the same speed. completely different situations.

But if there is NOT a car in the lane next to you, it is good driving to move over. As another poster pointed out, if a car stays in that lane it doesn't allow the oncoming car to get up to traffic speed.
